Hi just looking for information which could be of use to everyone once shared. What food can be kept fresh without a fridge for a long time and keeps you going and healthy.
I've heard cloves of garlic were carried by roman solders because they were light, never perished and could sustain a human being for long periods of time.
Also dried fruit keeps for months on end without going off.
while on the garlic subject, Credo Mutwa states that a wooden stake made of teak is the only weapon for killing 4th dimensional reptilian vampires. I'm wondering if Bram Stocker got the garlic thing right as well.
Not that I'm hitting the road or anything, but if one day the shit hits the fans I will be grabbing the dried fruit and garlic cloves while all the muppets fight over mars bars and beer :)

Try learning to dry fruits out, without any moisture left in them they can last over a year...

Wheatgrass and barley grass seeds are a good choice, takes 3 days to sprout and contain most minerals we need.

They say that cockroaches will survive anything, including nuclear attack.
People do eat beetles in Central America. Grubs in other places.
Could "they" be telling us something?

I bought one of those Heinz sponge puddings which you either boil in the can for 35 minutes or nuke for 2mins. I usually nuke. I dont usually have any leftovers either lol but the other week I forgot to eat the half I was saving for a night-time feast and left it in the cupboard and went away for near on a week.
When I came back it had no mould on it. So I guess they keep for a long time. I didnt eat it, so cant tell you if it still tasted as good.
Also we make "cloutie dumplings" here (recipe online), loaded with raisins and sultanas, takes about 4 hrs to cook but keeps for a long time. A bit like Christmas cake but better.

Hi space lizard
Good thread & some interesting info :)
I'm not sure how the Romans were storing their cloves of garlic though. I've noticed that if it sits around for a while, it starts to sprout, like onions do, & the cloves shrivel up.

I rarely use the microwave but did use it for those. Infact it is standing joke that it is just a very large box housing a small clock in my kitchen. Having seen the Heinz sponge pudding looking none the worse after nearly a week, it kind of put me off them.

I find this thread particularly interesting because just this week I finally started my stocking up in food for "when the shit hits the fan". I bought just tins to start with (kidney beans, toms, corned beef). I plan to buy other types of stuff too and hope this thread helps me.
Funnily enough, I somehow got hold of a Mormon pamphlet a week or two ago which said that they advise their members to stock up in food (particularly wheat and other stuff) for a national/global emergency which they are expecting to happen pretty soon. I think they are expecting the second coming of Christ and it's gonna cause the end of the world or something like that.

DEAD FOOD = DEATH, I ALREADY KNOW I CAN GO MONTHS WITHOUT EATING!!! So I will take a negative, like an apocalypse, and turn it into a positive by fasting!!! It is documented that hikers lost in the wild, starved to death, after only a few days! Their own programmed minds told them they were starving, so they created that reality, and appropriately died! Where I live, there is lots of water! There are more lakes in Canada than in the rest of the world combined! That is all I need to survive indefinitely. There are also lots of wild plants to eat! You know, the ones we have been programmed to put poison on! They are called weeds!!! :D

I saw on the Dr Robert Beck video that garlic is a poison (has been used in acient civilisations as an assasin's weapon) and inhibits brain activity. (Might explain why Roman soldiers used it - maybe they were given it by their commanders?)
He states that you must refrain from consuming garlic when using his blood electrifier.

you know i've been thinking about this myself, about having a bag ready with all the things you'd need when the shit hits the fan...not so much food ( i actually forgot the must important thing for survival lol) but torches, medical supplies, a compass, those kool foil type blankets to keep warm...etc maybe a big gun too lol
reading this now i think i will get an emergency supply ready now, only were i'll put it in our flat i don't know lol our stuff is bursting out of the cupboards as it is lol
good idea though, and practical...i hope nickatnoon is right that we don't need food...i know when i'm sick a few days and can't really eat i lose weight so quick i need to change my way of thinking or whatever to stop that otherwise the shit will hit the fan and a few days later i'll be wasting away already fook me!

i wouldn't advise eating cockroaches EVER! they carry salmonella to name just one of the horrible germs they carry on their dirty oily shitty bodies lol
after having an entire summer invaded by those buggers (due to work going on in the city exposing a huge nest) the last thing i would ever want to do is eat one. I'd rather die lol
they are HIDEOUS creatures.
considering all the nasty chemicals we blasted those critters with they deffo would survive a nuclear explosion easily. Only thing that killed them was boric acid, which dehydrates them, cutting them apart from the inside...the others then eat the ones that have died killing themselves in the process...LOVELY! haha!
maybe boric acid would kill the reps too?!

I know what you mean about losing weight when not eating properly. I tend to lose weight quickly too if I dont eat and it tends to worry me if I dont get a decent amount of food every day and I think that the worry contributes to it. I think Nick has a point because, just recently I have been eating smaller portions of food but I try to keep fit and I decided that I dont need to worry about food cos I keep physically fit (sort of) and I havent lost any weight! I put that down to not worrying about it.
Anyway, about stocking up the cupboards with survival food, my cupboards are totally full too so, like you, I have problems with storage. I need to work out some plan where to put the bloomin stuff. I bought loads of tins of beans the other day. The bad thing is I noticed that tinned food doesnt last as long as it did when I was younger, I think they have purposely done something to them :rolleyes:
I have a dynamo torch, compass, decent coats for warmth, candles, matches, lighters, magnifying glass, all the usual stuff. I have a small cheap solar panel that I got from Nettos. I too want one of those foil wrap things that keep you warm that you mentioned, they used to sell them in the Pound Shop but I havent seen them in a while. Also I want something that stores water. I sound mental dont I lol :D You are welcome to come round the shops with me Celtic, we will look like two crazy loons lol :D
I also want to make a solar reflector, which can be used to heat things up or set paper (or whatever) alight.
I need to learn how to make bread TOTALLY FROM SCRATCH. The last time I did that I was a very young school kid. I better stop rambling on now anyway :p:D

Seriously though, we really should all do this. There's a brilliant shop here called "nature decouverts" which means discoveries of nature or something and i love that shop so much, they sell really anything you'd ever need to survive outdoors etc and in style lol :D It's expensive though...but they've got those foil blanket things, and i think they only cost a few euros so they'd be worth it. I have to get a dynamo torch! They're kool, aren't they powered by solar energy or a little lever thing?
hehe BREAD FROM SRATCH...i haven't done this myself since school...flour, water, and something to make it rise, baking powder, soda, yeast...you think we could still make bread if things really got bad? I'll end up eating them bastard cockroaches! NEVER :p
Wow i really need to learn how to survive lol
This is scary actually thinking about it.
I think you're right too about the losing weight, worrying makes it worse. I saw an osteopath who said i keep all my worry etc right in my stomach chakra, he unblocked it and i felt fantastic after, like floating, it's back now though the ball in the belly...he was saying anything i eat just get used up straight away, just the way i'm built. Sounds great what you've been able to do, survive on less food just cause you're not thinking about it as much. I must try and do that too. You don't feel burnt out at all from keeping fit/exercising? I guess when you're not stressing about eating as much the body takes care of itself.
i'll see if i can get a link for the shop i mentioned up there. can maybe buy those foil things online lol

I mainly shop at Pound Shops, I avoid the expensive places if possible. Yeah my torch is the one with a lever but I bet they will break in the end so I need to get a wind up torch for Xmas. They are pretty cheap now but the LED's are pale blue and I prefer ones with white light cos it feels better on the senses. I will let you know if I find a foil blanket in the Pound Shop, the only thing is it's all full of xmas decor at the mo in them places.

I threw my microwave out ages ago too. And mobile.
If you google for Food Grade Storage Containers you will get some interesting products. I would like to buy 5 years worth of supply but cannot find anywhere that sells that kind of thing in the UK although the US is well covered.
I have heard somewhere that you can eat grass roots if really desperate.
Things would go to hell in a handbasket in about 3 days I reckon if food became scarce. There are plenty of signs they intend this.

I've had a jar of peanut butter that's been in my cabinet for over two months and it's still fine, so that would be good for a relatively short amount of time. If you had an unopened jar, of course longer. It's filling and nutritous.
whole grains
beans
unshelled nuts
pasta
unopened soy milk can be kept in pantries
rice
flour
Of course, you can have tons of canned and packaged food, like meal bars, protein bars, etc that last quite awhile.
