What animals do you dream about?
I'm partial to the bear...
http://www.udap.com/safety.htm
http://www.udap.com/images/bears/BEAR2.JPG
Bears seem to experience moods much like we do; they can be shy, curious, pushy, or aggressive, and can possess other attributes that we can identify as humanlike. Each time you get close to a bear, you encounter a specific individual that may behave differently from any other individual you have ever met before or will ever meet again.
Grizzly attack victims are often not aware of why they were attacked. Many attacks are caused by close encounters, where the bear has been surprised and feels threatened by human presence.
I've had many dreams of encountering bears in the woods and when I do I just avoid the mountains for a bit. Last night I had a dream that I was along the nearby river which saddles the mountains and I was finding carrots and other food offerings to bears. I remember thinking 'Who the hell is leaving food like this for the bears!?'
Knowing this was dangerous I edge away from the river and just as I come over the top I see a black furry figure rush in some direction. I circle across a tree and jump into the river and swim to the other bank... a somewhat impossible feat considering how deep and quick moving it is. When I come out the other side I remember feeling elated and not at all afraid... I haven't encountered bears up close, only observed from a distance. They are curious and deadly beings, and there are so many interesting and scary encounters told with them.

The power of the Bear totem
is the power of introspection.
The answers to all our questions
lie within us.
Each of us has the capacity to quiet the mind,
enter the silence and know.
Just as the bear hibernates during the winter,
people with a Bear totem will be quieter
during the winter months. But they
must awaken in the spring and seek
whatever opportunities are around them.
When you have a Bear totem,
you are being guided to a leadership role.
You must be fearless in defending your beliefs.
The Bear also encourages you to exercise
your abilities as a natural healer.
Bears are associated with trees which are natural antennas, linking the heavens and the Earth.
Bear also has links to the seven color rays of the Universal Light
as well as Lunar ties, linking the subconscious and the unconscious mind.
It is associated with the Goddess Artemis.
I think bears are eerily like people... they have very strong minds behind deep eyes. The natives in most cultures regarded bears as another form of human. A skinned bear is disturbingly similar to a human. Most people consider them monsters, which they can be . But they are also power animals... nature spirits of importance. They're massively powerful and have more capable senses than any other mountain animal.
I want to repeat again, that a full grown Grizzly is massively powerful. They are known to get this big around my locality :
YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.
The males are serious business... obviously. But so are the mothers. Very protective and they have to put up with male threat constantly.
Mother with 3 cubs meets adult Grizzly - YouTube
This is an example of mother grizzlies and why they aren't a joke. Encountering cubs in the wild really sucks, no matter which direction you go you're in incredible danger.

Interesting metacomet:)
I resd a book called Mad Bear by Doug Boyd, Mad Bear was a shaman in the 70's to the 90's was very prominent on the speaking circuit.
The stories were told that sometimes Mad Bear couldn't be found when people wanted to contact him and that he shapeshifted into a bear for some reason.
I say that everyone has a totem animal relative to their country of residence.

good thread. I used to draw peoples with their power animals...(or what i sensed them to be) in abstract form. here are a few...

Ive just been on a shamanic journeying weekend, and i journeyed to find my power animal and it turned out to be a dragon. i was shocked to say the least. but it gave me a very powerful healing symbol in my 3rd eye for healing earth energys... very usefull against the tetra masts and such like.
I tryed it on a horse (the healing symbol the dragon gave me) and it made the horse sway away from me and i nearly fell backwards... so its too powerful for a human/animal.
Power animals rock!!!

I once had a really life-like dream that I was a beast, but I don't know what kind. I was low to the ground, and I came across a large puddle of water near the steps of a house.
I was drinking the water, & it tasted really pure & refreshing - I sucked the water in - there was no lapping.
Then some people came out of the house from a side exit, about 30 feet away, and when they saw me, I sensed they were scared of me, and I was scared of them.
Then I woke up.
I'd love to know what type of creature I was.

yes, jojo! I also have a feeling that we have lived as various animals before in previous lives! Its cool!
Sometimes I meet some folks who say that animals have no souls... Its a shame when people actually believe that.

How do you embark on a shamanic journey?
I've done a fair bit of meditating, but the only creatures I see regularly are little finches, which usually metamorphosise into parrots, for some reason, and many dragon flies.
Your pictures are amazing btw, I LOVE them, Jojo.

well, its basically meditating to a rythmical drum beat. You need a scarf over your eyes if its not a dark enviroment, have an intent for the journey ie "i want to find my power animal/spirit guide/dream state animal" etc and start off on a journey in your minds eye.
you usually start either journeying down through a cave/tree roots. or up a tree or rock face... or walking in a meadow or forest, whatever feels right for you. And then somewhere it stops becoming imagination and somthing else takes over and you go on a trip.
When its time to return the drum beat changes drastically and you can bring yourself back into the room.
you can buy drumming cd's but i would recomend going to a shamanic practitioner for the 1st time.

Thanks for that - I've used a drum before in meditations - I may have a guided meditation for animal spirits now that I come to think of it, that I've not tried yet (Ted Andrews I think).

well, fish are swift, full of energy masters of their own enviroment and are other worldy so enable us to connect to other dimensions when their power is called upon. what type of fish do you see?
Deer seem elegent swift and fleet of foot. live in a harmonious herd that is predated upon so have to have their wits about them at all times and have to work as a community to survive the preditor. If you feel drawn to then, use their power in your life forge deep friendships, heal relationship problems and connect to your higher self.

both the same family, they both have the ability swim in fresh and salt water.
an ability to shift from one reality to another.
Salmon have increadble strength and determination. they swim with all their strength up stream to give new life. so they can represent strength of the divine.
your last dream was a dried up river? are you feeling loss or a disconection at the moment?
have either your physical or emotional strength been depleted?

Na! Never even dreamed about Mr Irwin either although that’s surprising with the menagerie that I have inside my head…:D
Thinking about Celebs that I’ve dreamed about with animal companions though is Elizabeth Taylor, she had a small white lap dog sitting on her knee and then there was William Shatner who was riding a bay coloured horse. Oh and the Russian guy Lenin, I saw him lying (dead) inside his coffin and he was worried about his pet cat…Like! What the?...

Sometimes in my dreams people shift back and forth between people and animals. I don't know if that means anything, but it is weird because while I am in the dream, I don't view it as something out of the ordinary .

What a powerful thing to draw people with their spirit animal... ties them in a magical way to their spiritual counterparts.

Isn't that strange!? Father figures (i.e. my father, old teachers, role models) have turned into lions in my dreams before... their face would morph into a lionesque human face and suddenly I'd be talking to a different person... if only I could remember those conversations, they could've been important.

This last weekend I saw my totem animal while meditating. I was on a backpacking trip to Hell's Canyon. We had climbed all day to reach this Native American sacred place called Suicide Point. The rocks around are covered in petroglyphs. While recovering from the climb I sat at the edge of the cliff looking down on the river valley below. I started to feel the power of this sacred place and began to meditate with eyes partially closed. As I entered my "dream" state I leaped from the cliff edge spreading my wings and flying through the canyon below. After flying through the canyon for sometime, my view returned to the cliff edge and I was watching myself fly above the river as a winged lion. Somehow I knew this was my spirit animal and when I got home I researched totems. I couldn't find "Winged Lion" on any totem site but I did find Griffin. Anyone know if there is a difference between a winged lion and a griffin?
I'm going to try the drum beat meditation next and see if it reappears:D

I was reading the book "Celtic Totem animals" from google books aaaand this was interesting:
"It is important to remember that yo do not choose your Totem Animal-it is more true to say it chooses you.
Thus, many students beging their apprenticeship by deciding that they want to be represented by an eagle, or a bear, or a stag - all of them noble and powerful. They are often surprised, and disapointed, to find they have a mouse or a hedgehog as a helper.
This may happen because the spirits feel we should not get too much of an idea of our importance, but more often than not it is because the spirit chooses to take the form that is most appropiate to itself. Mice and hedgehogs are just as important as eagles, and often cleverer!"
How have you guys found out what your totem animal is?
Jojo found through shamanic drumming, right?
For me they've always been obvious, since I always had a connection with hedgehogs and dolphins,
even though I can't listen to dolphins anymore for some unknown reason.

How have you guys found out what your totem animal is?
Any animal which 'approaches' you in certain situations can be read as a sign.
For instance last year I was doing many solitary hikes in the mountains, offering prayer fires and such - during these hikes Ravens, which have the smallest population in this area - would follow me, visit me, 'talk' to me. Magpies are the dominant bird species yet I didn't see those... just Ravens.
The Ravens could be seen as totems. My interpretation of their presence is a private matter - as most peoples interpretation of animal signs should be.
Even though I consider the Bear to be my 'power animal' I do not have the desire to bump into them like I would with Ravens. I encounter them all the time in my dreams though. So they are just another totem... another sign to be contemplated.

Bragging about your power animal, signs you've recieved etc. is bad luck.
Simply talking about them is not.
For instance someone would say "I have seen many large Elk this year. They are coming to me because that is my animal... I am strong like the Elk etc." This was common.
If sharing visions or power animals were bad luck, 'Black Elk Speaks' would have never been published and Black Elk himself would have continued suffering under the weight of the visions he received as a child, he was always afraid to share them. It's important to share.

The only animal I ever recall dreaming about is giraffes what with their wacky long necks, the surveyors of the land from a great height. Not sure what it means but giraffes resonate with me quite a bit, I find them to be loyal, loving, happy creatures. The only times I have seen them in my dreams is when I am lost or stuck somehow (sticky floors or the inability to run), they lead the way and help with their long necks and make me laugh because of their funny faces.

yep, thru drumming and going into a trance like state. its true, they seek you out, not the other way round. Any preconcived ideas of what you want just fly out the window.... for example before i went into the shamanic journey (trance) i was SURE that i was going to see a horse.... i did not see one.

 I do that too when i can. only the countryside over here is smaller. but there is no risk of any animals killing you over here, no poisnus snakes, spiders or big animals. I love wondering through the woods alone being with the beings of the wood ..... although my springer spaniel dog is a bugger for frightening many off.
as for my PA. although i dont mind sharing certain experiences... but i would only share the ins and outs of the journey with the other people who were sitting round the medinine wheel and and very close friends.
I certainly would not like to meet mine in the flesh either ;)

The badger is a wonderful totum!!! i would be proud of such a fine animal! Badgers are deep burrowers of the earth, need to dig deep and be strong and are excelent at surviving ;) very very wise, normally passive but if provoked are a most formidable foe.
anyway, maybe you need to find your power animal yourself, rather than being "told" what it was (even if it was a shaman). :) only you can find out for sure .

Giraffes rock.
oh what a lovely story :) They come to heal and guilde you in times of anguish. wonderful

Hi quester! :)

hiya sade,
Are you wanting the drumming CD specifically for shamanic journey work?
Well, no. I'd use it to get in to a trance, more than anything.
I am interested in shamanish, but Im trying to stick to one thing at a time, otherwise my brain will explode with all the information Im gathering. :x

Hi jojo
Personally, I feel it is important to create your own individual sound signature and rhythm. Something unique and individual.
So I just use a rawhide rattle, which is filled with some small crystals. It was made for me a number of years ago and I then added my own meaningful colours, beads and feathers to it.
Suppose it depends what works best for a person, if a CD happens to fit the bill then fine! Just for general meditation, I personally like to listen a nice relaxing reiki CD
Hope that helps:)
Jojo: Yeah, but there's still so much to it that it's not just getting in to a trance. 8D
I wish I had 15 brains so I could research all day long...
I sometimes tend to dance without music, which in fact sometimes works better!
Recommend it. It might seem odd in the beginning, but after getting over not having any music,
you start finding the most odd rhytmn that is beyond amazing!
What animals do you dream about?
I'm partial to the bear...

The males are serious business... obviously. But so are the mothers. Very protective and they have to put up with male threat constantly.

This is an example of mother grizzlies and why they aren't a joke. Encountering cubs in the wild really sucks, no matter which direction you go you're in incredible danger.

Hi i had a spell in hospital recently a good friend lent me a book on native Indian power animals . I read a chapter a night each about a shape shifting transformation into that animal .The first night i read about Bear . Each evening and thru the night the nurses adjusted patients beds . They made a noise when they did this . This particular night the bed mechanism got jammed and it roared just like a bear ! :DA few days later an elderly man who drifted in and out of consciousness asked the nurse what type of animal it was stood by my bed! I had no balloons or toys etc , but i knew he was seeing Bear ;):D
This is a good site for info

interesting, why is it bad luck?
The Celts believed that if your enemies knew your totem, they could use the totem against you through magical means.
Just like Superman keeping all the Kryptonite for himself.

I have always loved animals since I was a child. I remembered that I loved sea life, I would always draw dolphins, whales, killer whales, and other whales. Mostly cetaceans, but mostly I love dolphins and somehow I seem to have a small connection with them. But as time passes and little by little as I grew older. My interests change, of course.
I grew up with cartoons with animal people in it. That's I love anthropomorphic animals and Furries. As I am still today. I grew up with Sonic The Hedgehog games and I love them. But, I do not know about hedgehogs, since I never dreamed about them or into them.
Now, I love Foxes so much! I don't know why....I always daydream about foxes, anthro foxes in my mind. Like they are telling me something. I even have a Arctic Fox plush toy, I need more! Most likely, I love Red Foxes the most. I often search for Fox lore, myths, fiction stories, pictures, furries, and videos during my past times. So odd, that I am slightly connected to them....
I remembered that I have two weird dreams....
I dreamed a fox changing into a humanoid female fox (vixen) with a dress? It's rusty for me to remember, it was a really weird dream. The vixen that wears a dress suddenly attack humans!!? I was there standing and the humanoid vixen jumped on a unsuspecting human male and then proceeded to bite him on the neck and sucked his blood. Then I woke up, I opened my eyes and blinked.
Then this dream, all I can see is water that is green-blue and it was murky. I heard sounds of dolphins....The dream seems like it was underwater and the water was moving rapidly. I saw a human woman swimming then she shapeshifts into a dolphin! I could see her transformation, it was so odd and, and hard to explain! Then the female dolphin swam away then I awake from my slumber.....
Also, another strange event. I wasn't dreaming! It happened on a lazy morning. I heard chants of crows and a raven? perched on top of large fir tree in my old apartment that my family used to live. Now I moved to a new home, but I can remember it very clearly.
The sky was blue with a few clouds. The sun was up and I was awoken by the chants and shouts of crows. Like they were talking to each other or just chanting/singing? It was so loud! I look through the window and found more than five crows! I was amazed to see what were they doing! They chanted for at least 10 minutes or even longer! Wow.....after a while they all flew away. The crows were near my window....were those crows telling me something, as they keep chanting and singing???
Another odd oddity. On Saturday back in January I was wearing all black. A black shirt, black jeans, and black shoes. I am walking to a shopping plaza which is 1 mile away from old former home. I saw a black cat near someone's house and as I walk near the cat, the cat sat down like he was behaving. The black cat had yellowish-green eyes. Then after several walks, I saw a black dog and he had a collar. He sniffed the grass and he doesn't mind me walking near him, but he wasn't alone, he was with his master.
I was wearing black, I saw a black cat, and then I saw a black dog. Is it telling a message to me? It was so strange! I keep about thinking about the number 333 that day. I being the 3, the black cat 3, and the black dog 3.

The bear is also one of the four main power animals; bear, deer, eagle, and wolf.
The bear is also mainly a healing energy- He could be coming to you in your dreams with the message that some internal healing is needed inside you. They can also be warnings of impending health problems...not to pry but how are you feeling physically?
The message can also be that you are to be a healer in this life time.
What animals do you dream about?

My main animal is the wolf. The best 'dream' I'd have to say I had was more of a vision/experience where I found a wolf trapped in a leg hold trap in the woods. I tried to free him with a walking stick I had by prying the trap open but it would not work and he grew aggressive and panic stricken. Finally I resolved myself to set aside my fears and I approached him bare handed and lay my hands on the trap, releasing his leg. He did not bite nor did he run away. I poured water from my canteen into my hand and he drank from the palm of my hand and we sat awhile in each other's company. As I came out of my vision I swear my arms had transformed into the forelegs of a wolf- they were not my own and did not bend like a human arm would; in fact I swear I fully shape shifted in this vision.
Since this vision there have been others but this one was the most pinnacle event.
After this vision I was blessed with a number of encounters with wild wolves- timber and gray...and they were nothing short of ...............magical.

hi 3stepsahead. thanks for the compliment on my drawings.
i cant do fortune telling im afraid, or tell you what your power animal is (only you can find out)
with those drawings i knew the people personally, and i took aspects of their personality and compared them to the power of respective animals. :)

They indeed do...But the reason behind them having so many problems is the farming,
that needs to stop. :x Im also still a bit afraid of bees, so Im trying to stay away. :D
Btw I found this image while browsing for something completely different and since you seem to like horses:
