Brown today called Kennedy, 77, one of the “most distinguished senators known in every continent and a great friend.” Kennedy, who’s suffering from brain cancer, didn’t attend the speech, though Brown said he spoke to him last night.
Kennedy said he was “deeply grateful” for the honor and recalled the ties between the U.K. and his family.
As a foreigner, Kennedy won’t take the title “Sir.” He will be entitled to place the letters KBE, for Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire, after his name.
