Big Brother is now placing a ban on reduced cost alcohol in Scotland and coming up with proposals to make a minimum price per unit. Obviously because, like worried parents, the government is concerned about the health of it's little wee bairns, and creating more stealth taxes into the bargain.

That maybe a good thing if it is involving supermarkets, it may get the people going out to socialise again, huh but wait a min, most of the pubs are shut.

The joke is that booze in Britain is among the most expensive in the world. Most European countries, with the possible exception of Scandinavia, sell alcohol in supermarkets or shops at a fraction of the price than in the UK.

..a horrible thought, do you think they will ban alcohol in pubs, just like they did with ciggies??.."Mine's a blueberry J2O barman, oh, and a 1/2 a pint of coke for the missus."...:D

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo..... ...:(

Did you know there are completely non alcoholic drinks and elixers that will give you a high that is completely natural, healthy and safe, and better than booze?? Wonder why they don't start selling that in pubs...why do the govt insist on allowing places like Wetherspoons operate on a Fri night and have hoards of louts falling out, drunk and abusive, with police vans on hand..?? Is it deliberate so they can bring in some sort of law soon...banning ALL pubs?? So...booze being made prohibitively expensive, or even banned, so pubs will go under...less places for the masses to congregate and get together...hmmm...sounds like a WONDERFUL idea...NOT...

:D

Bastards. It's nothing to do with the price. We have a drinking culture in the UK and that isn't going to change over night by upping the Tax.

Right thats it: Lets Get Drunk....go down to the houses of parliment and demand the establishment have a drink with us!

It currently costs me just over £2 for a liter bottle of Bourbon... a cheap but nice version of southern comfort. A two liter bottle of coke i mix it with costs £1.65

I very rarely drink alcohol myself. But there are plenty in Britain who appear to be absolute slaves to it for their enjoyment of life, increasingly. I've not long been back in this country, and I saw fellow Brits in their 20s getting ino the same state in south east asia, even. Even when away, they can't leave it alone. Once again the government has missed the point (or knows exactly what it is doing, as it will gain money from rises) on this, and is going for tackling the symptoms rather than the root cause. Like they do with everything. They say the root cause of such wide spread drinking is the cheap price. Oh aboslute Bollocks. That's either delusion, denial, or just that they saw they could make a fortune on taxing from this. Clearly there is a reason why so many people are moved to drink themselves into oblivion several times a week, and it must be looked at if this nation is not to become more seriously screwed up more than it is. At this time in youth circles the worse off you are the next morning, the better it seems. The more brownie points you get. The more you're seen as some kind of maverick. At one time, getting that drunk and rolling around in your own puke meant you were a loser. Now you're a flippin hero if you could'n't walk the night before and can't remember it either. People have created that around it to hide that all this increasingly heavy drinking is actually a desperate cry for help, of course. Lack of meaning in their every day lives in this society where nobody knows what they are supposed to be anymore, and an existential confusion about what life is all about, for many. Of course, there are lots of people who drink now and again and in moderation and they will get stung by the silly approach to this now. Anyway, those are my two pennys worth :)

What would that do other than put up the price ,and cause more deaths than before due to poorly made booze?

Banning a substance is not the right way to go about dealing with a problem . I mean look at the war on drugs as it is , hardly a winning candidate for dealing with the problem.

the reality is, alcohol can only be sold via a license, so if we have a binge drinking culture in this country, then people a clearly breaking the law and serving inebreated people..yet still retain their license and without retribution from the authorities, which is a clear signal that it is ok as long as you pay!

Yes.Just look at what happened in Russia.Blindness and internal organ failure caused by cheap, lethal moonshine.Very good point to make.

I still maintain my position that the decline of British society is directly related to making pubs "family-friendly" in the 80's.There was no logical reason for doing it unless you wanted to create the lad/laddette culture 20 years down the line or so.

I'm not really much of a drinker, never was,but I certainly miss talking to other adults in a pub setting. It looks like we will all stop drinking in pubs due to the prohibitive prices. That will be the final nail in the coffin of a Great British institution.
It will also segregate adults even further.I strongly feel, they want us isolated as single units, functioning alone in silence.Wake,work,eat,shit,die.

Have you ever thought how much more easy it would have been to alert others to what was really going-on if the sanctity of the pub had still been in existence today?

Maybe,I've romanticised my own recollection of life down the pub.

He is not my nephew as far as I am aware.

Being in my late 30's the need to go out on the town and get pissed has long since waned, but I still like a drink, chilling in my own flat.

Homebrew is the answer. I brew Young's homebrew wine, you can make 30 bottles around 13% volume for about £24, this includes the price of the sugar. The start to finish process is 7 to 8 days. Put more sugar in to make it sronger.

It tastes far superior than the supermarket plonk and doesn't give you a sore throat like the s/market shit does.

At least if you are an alcoholic, doing the above means you can be continually wasted for £12 a week, and you pay the government fuck all tax revenue in the process.

My mum once distilled rye whiskey in her pressure cooker. That was good stuff.

She & the neighbours used to make every variety of wine imaginable, & all congregate at our house with it once a week. If you left a pair of socks lying about, one of them was likely to make wine from them.

Ah, the good old days!

I must have saved in 2 year over a grand and a half, plus swim's mates will have saved a canny penny too cos swim is kind like that you know... some of them turn their noses up at it cos its not Jack Daniels or Smirnoff but those of us who do drink it were saving heaps.

I think they plan to ban it, there is very little production in the UK apart from the whisky in scotland there aint much else, at least not in the North East Vaux at sunderland gone, Scotish and Newcastle at Newcastle Gone, Camerons at Eden Castle/Heartlepool Gone, the Brewery in Gateshead Gone, do you think these guys have been tipped off in advance, even Carling the number one selling lager in the UK is no longer a British Company. Our Beer Industry is closed down.... I think they have been tipped off that the plan is to make booze ilegal.

But dont worry, it is so simple to make, you will be better off.

Interesting , your Avatar of Gene wilder is from the early 70s .

The film was released in the year I was born.

What are the chances....:p

I only changed it to that in the last day or so. Prior to that it was the Aphex Twin logo. I put Willie Wonka on there for the "wea re the music makers and dreamers of dreams" quote - which was sampled in an Aphex Twin song.

Connections, connections.

Women and children getting beat up by there drunken husband and fathers, people leaving clubs and getting the shite kicked out of them for no reason other than walking past a few drunken assholes, kids getting booze and destroying peoples freedom to walk the street safe at night, Drunken drivers killing kids in the thousands every year, Not to mention people drinking themselves to death are all signs that the booze is the most dangerous drug ever to circulate our country.
