I've been wondering the difference between freemen and having freedom to the city. I suspect the whole thing has got lost or withheld in history.

here's a link to my local council site and talks of freemen and freedom of the city

As someone else posted, Nelson Mandela has been given 'freedom of the city' status in all of the UK while he was in prison.
Is this the same as being declared a freeman on the land or is there a significent difference?

If its the same thing, then surely if you send an NOU to declare freeman, you should be added to the city records as a having freedom of the city.

Hope someone can clear this up
