My two years old daughter recently has found my iPod and listened to some songs; she now doesn't want to hear anything else than Nik Kershaws "The Riddle". So I took a closer look at the lyrics and stumbled over words and terms I don't understand but seem to have deeper meaning; like Blessings of Babylon or Nights in the scullery
Also he doesn't sing "history" like "hee-stooo-ry", but more like "his story", but of course I may be wrong. :o

So, if there's anyone out there who has experience in understanding lyrics, would you mind and tell me your opinion?
Also, when you look at the video, it definitifely shows a lot of hints towards the freemasons (3:43).

Here are the complete lyrics:

I got two strong arms
Blessings of Babylon
With time to carry on and try
For sins and false alarms
So to America the brave
Wise men save

Near a tree by a river
There's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Aran
Goes around and around
And his mind is a beacon
In the veil of the night
For a strange kind of fashion
There's a wrong and a right
But he'll never, never fight over you

I got plans for us
Nights in the scullery
And days instead of me
I only know what to discuss
Oh, for anything but light
Wise men fighting over you

It's not me you see
Pieces of valentine
With just a song of mine
To keep from burning history
Seasons of gasoline and gold
Wise men fold

Near a tree by a river
There's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Aran
Goes around and around
And his mind is a beacon
In the veil of the night
For a strange kind of fashion
There's a wrong and a right
But he'll never, never fight over you

I got time to kill
Sly looks in corridors
Without a plan of yours
A blackbird sings on bluebird hill
Thanks to the calling of the wild
Wise men's child

Near a tree by a river
There's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Aran
Goes around and around
And his mind is a beacon
In the veil of the night
For a strange kind of fashion
There's a wrong and a right
But he'll never, never fight over you

Near a tree by a river
There's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Aran
Goes around and around
And his mind is a beacon
In the veil of the night
For a strange kind of fashion
There's a wrong and a right
But he'll never, never fight over you

But he'll never, never fight over you

Thank you very much for your efforts!!

Love, Antiem

i love this song. i think kershaw was awake. in an interview he said the lyrics were just jibberish, but i suspect they have deeper meaning. i suspect it was an encripted warning....

other songs on the Riddle album speak about how materialism will destroy the world called "everything coming up roses"

another one called "easy" speaks of how petty tyrants such as traffic wardens and bouncers will become the henchmen of the system.

and yet another song on the same album called "save the whale" is very haunting and powerfull.

Nick Kershaw was/is a dude IMO
