What the fuck hahaha. Why does that article make me laugh so much. It could be the creepy look on her face surrounded by all the pastel fuzzy shit and her stump.
In reality, I'd be pissed if I had kids and they were afraid of a one armed person. I'd hope that if I had kids, I would have instilled enough smarts in them not to be afraid of something so silly.
I'm surprised not to see "The Onion" at the head of that article. Nice unintentional humour. :D

Yeah all the mums and dads in our circle of friends are disturbed by this.
It's fine for armless people to be on telly, don't get me wrong and I can see that BBC are trying to PROVE that they are oh so politically correct and will hire disabled people to headline key shows and programmes, but for a channel like ceebeebies, it's a bit wrong to cause our kids to feel weird about it, surely this girl would be better used elsewhere? The kids ask enough strange questions as it is without fueling it like this.
Not sure what to make of it.
There is also a character called "handrew" which is like a person off-screen whose hand comes on the screen to give the presenter something, kind of like a butler - so this is kind of weird too.

I believe someone is deliberately courting controversy here.
It is concievable that some sensetive toddlers would be disturbed by this, but she doesn't have to have it on display, does she. A prosthetic arm, or even just a long sleeve would suffice - end of (manufactured) problem.

Better yet, they shouldn't have sewn it up. They should just have a bloody nub squirting all over the camera and pastel decor. Sewn up nubs are so 1990s. come on.

Bloody Nora! Some parents really piss me off! No, it wouldnt scare any of my kids, they may stare at it and that is something the poor lady has to cope with but be scared? Hell no! :(
Parents need to educate their children just a tad more if they were scared.

All the parents have to do is explain to their children that some people look different to others. There is still a huge intolerance to disability in this country and it needs to change. Some parents are so stupid they do piss me off

Yes, my son who is 2 years old gets very scared when she dances and her arm flaps about . I do believe that children should accept disabilities but think this is the wrong way to do it. Cbeebies is a channel for pre school kids 5 and under, these babies cannot understand things like this. To be honest, I think the presenter herself is quite creepy, armless or not! ok I shouldnt have said he gets very scared, more just creeped out. I dont want him to grow up and be one of this brainwashed idiots who thinks anyone who does not look the norm is strange. Like I said he is 2 years old only just, so even when I try to explain some people look different, he still looks worried when she pops up on screen! He is a toddler after all.

Definitely! What also pisses me off is the saying about it being 'politically correct' to have disabled people on TV.
What about MORALLY correct? How about some film stars being not what you would term 'gorgeous' and the disgusting palava during the China olympics where the little girl singing was replaced by another little girl who was better looking and mimed her song?
How about the aborted deformed babies? Oh they dont look right, lets dispose of them!
thios is making me too mad!

Sorry for being so rude in the last post :o
this society just gets to me sometimes. If over the years we havent been covering up deformities, our children would be used to different-looking people.
Its all about focusing on 'looks' I wonder how many conjoined twins would have coped with their lives as they were instead of being separated just because people dont want to see them, and so often one or both of them die? Or the amount of deformed people who are hidden away in some institution where their parents are too ashamed to be seen with them?
(my 5 year old loves in the night garden too, and Mr Magic, lol, I do let him watch the telly sometimes but Im plucking up the courage to bin it one day)

Everyday i look at my little girl and thank her for being here, because without her i wouldn't have found In The Night Garden.
I cant believe we're discussing the fact that a woman has one arm, surely part of the problem that keeps people divided are the labels we give each other,i.e black, white disabled, able bodied etc. At the end of the day we're all human beings.

In the night garden is utter bullshit, that goes off whenever it comes on. It teaches children NOTHING, has no entertainment value whatsoever and is simply dumbing down the children by suggesting they speak in beeps and boops - fucking hate it!!
The other one I hate is that one like Ballamory where the children go and stay with pscyho-paedo "Granny Murray" while their parents go off to work on a train or cleaning a bus and it shows children how wonderful going to work to do monotonous, spirit crushing jobs for 8 hours is.
Fucking hate it, that goes off too.

It's funny how these stories come out at specific times, not long after Jeremy Clarkson called Brown a one eyed scottish idiot. I wonder if this story about the one armed presenter is gonna lead to a new law where you are not allowed to mention a disability ? They could then legally ban people like Clarkson should they so wish. Just a thought :o

Being from America, I haven't a clue about these shows.
However, if your kids are scared of someone with only one arm, that says more about the parents than it does the BBC. While many folks would prefer that anyone with a disability is sent off to the land of misfit toys and misfit people, the truth is that this only furthers the "divide and rule" mentality.
Here it is less than 4 years until 2012, and we are still playing stupid little games. Ever wonder what people with disabilities think of "normal" folk?

I dont really agree with you about the bit Ive highlighted, one of my boys seems a little 'timid' (not towards any disabilities mind...) but I suppose I tend to react differently and dont pander to it, for example if a child is afraid of a dog, some parents make the situation far worse without really intending to

I'd just like to say that contrary to popular belief, parents often aren't to blame for children's terrors. Quite often , the little ones will show distress at something, & the parents go out of their way to reassure them, but it's a bit like the advice people often give each other on this forum - "Just lose your fear of death" - and you expect it to be gone, puff, just like that.

At least they are putting people on TV that are not just clones of each other like here in America.
I am on Turner Classic Movies here in the US and I believe the piece about me now plays on TCM UK, not sure if it has started yet though. But anyway you know I am a strange looking punk rocker dude in a female body, that at the time we filmed the piece, I was about 60 pounds heavier than I am now.
Well people loved the piece about me so much and loved what I had to say so much that a shit ton of people wrote to TCM telling them they wanted to see me on the channel more. Not only did they get a shit ton of emails about it, there were hella threads posted about it on the TCM message board over the past couple of years. I also get tons of personal emails and myspace messages about it when ever it plays. ONE of the things people wanted was to have me be the host for still host-less TCM Underground, that plays late night Fridays and Saturdays. Which would totally make sense.
Well it has been a year and a half since it started playing, so they have been getting emails about this for a year and a half but they have still yet to hire me for anything. I wrote them about it a few times myself. Even though them hiring me would be good for TCM and very good for me, they don't act on it. I have gone down to their studios-once to Atlanta and once to LA and they paid me to speak at these meetings, but that is it.
But they hired crappy Rose McGowan who doesn't know shit about classic film at all to be on the channel...and why...because she is sexy, pretty and hot. The bitch sucked so bad that now she is gone after a year and who did they hire in her place.........ALEC BALDWIN! The fascist fuck that he is.
So because here in the states you have to look like a fucking Barbie doll clone if you are a woman and I do not look anything like that at all, I dont get a chance....at least not yet and now with the economy going to shit and the fact that they don't have commercials, hence they dont have that much money, I am afraid that I wont get my chance even though 100's of their fans want to see me on there...and why....because most people dont look like Rose McGowan and Brad Pitt. people saw in me themselves because I represent the real population---strange, over-weight, sexually confused and pissed off.
Here's the video about me that runs on TCM:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7rYREBMzDQ
(not that it matters much but I was about 60 pounds heavier than I am now when we filmed this. I had gained a lot of weight because of a severe hormonal imbalance, which is now being treated.)
If you are interested in knowing why I am changing my sex to be more male than female you can read my blog about it here:
http://becomingmichael.blogspot.com/2008/12/testosterone-and-me.html
PS. I am on TCM because I am a classic film historian. The tattoo I get in the video was just a bonus for them. Even if I didn't get that tattoo I would of still been on there (they made this clear to me before they got to seattle-in case I changed my mind and didn't get the tattoo). They designed the whole TCM Fanatic thing around me in order to have a title for the piece for the stupid hire up executives. It took about a year for the piece to be played from the time we filmed it. I like it, but there are some things about it I don't like too much. They found me online and read that I was getting that tattoo and wanted to film me talking about TCM and Classic Film because I do not look like your average classic film fan or your average historian.
PSS. Yes Ted Turner sucks shit, but he doesn't own the channel anymore. he sold it years ago. TCM fucking rules and you can LEARN A LOT about real history by watching some of those films. The whole classic film is propaganda crap is a lie to get you not to watch them. Remember the blacklisting of the 50's, well the elite had to gain control of Hollywood for their propaganda and that is how they did it.

It shouldnt scare kids if the parents explain that the world is not black and white. People come in all shapes and sizes. The most telling thing from that article was
They claimed that host Cerrie Burnell - who was born with one arm - is not suitable to appear on the digital children's channel
So the disabled should be heard and not seen according to that line. The parents seem quite backwards in the outlook toward body types.

While I understand what you're trying to tell me, I'd like to make a couple points-
1) The presenter in question has a physical, non-hideable disability. She is missing her arm from about the elbow on down. This is different from an issue that may be physical, but could be covered up by clothing. In her case wearing a long sleeve shirt or jacket only emphasizes her "issue."
2) Oddly enough, most of the kids that are scared of dogs have parents that are also scared of dogs. BTW - dogs can bite you. I doubt that anyone is suggesting that the presenter would do so.

I never said that if you have a talk with your kids, they'll get over whatever bothers them. My parents tried to tell me that no monsters live in the closet. I replied "I know that, they live under my little brothers' bed."
Do these parents say that other presenters or shows spook the kids? What's wrong with telling your kids the truth, people are different. If the kid doesn't want to see the one armed girl then how about reading to your child instead of plopping them down in front of the "electronic babysitter?"

It was a joke. You mentioned kids being scared of dogs as an example, I just kinda went with it.
I dont even think she SHOULD cover her arm up, besides a dangling sleeve would look peculiar.
Maybe to her it doesn't. People fear the unfamiliar, they really do. I understand that. When my little brother was 4, he actually asked me "why do you walk funny?" I responded "to see how many people laugh." When I was younger, kids would ask the same question. Turns out, once they actually talked to me and got to know me, they seemed to forget about my limp.
In the end I think that those who are upset with a one armed presenter, are using their kids as a scapegoat. "My kid's scared of her." The fact might be that the parents are repulsed at the thought of some "cripple" being seen on a grand network like BBC.

'To see how many people laugh', brilliant! :D

Iggle piggle or whatever the blue thing is called has no hands at all !?!
As for the complaints, I wonder how many parents are pushing their own fears and prejudices onto their children. Can't believe this even made the news. Heaven forbid any of these sensitive kids venture into Trafalgar Square and see 'that monument'
When I was very young, my grandmother and I would walk downtown to do shopping. The very old WWII soldiers would walk about downtown also. One leg, no legs, canes, wheelchairs, eye patches. It was natural for a very young child to stare. It was very natural to get yelled at for it too.
The experience made me get used to that sort of thing. As I grew older and would see a disabled person I didn't think anything of it unlike my fellow school age friends who thought I was the weird one. I was pretty much raised around old people.
It is a reality albeit an unpleasant one to think someone was born with a physical deficiency or came by one due to an accident or military duty. There is only one way to learn things. Children are always learning and this is just one more thing they have to learn about the real world.

It's probably easier for some parents to shove their kids in front of the TV and leave them there all day, but now the TV can't answer the questions about the presenter and, instead, the parent now has to interact with their child and explain things to them. No wonder some of them are so pissed.
My kids have seen her (they're 3, 4 and 5 years old), they asked where the rest of her arm was, a simple explanation of "thats how she was born, sometimes peoples bodies don't work properly" sufficed. They asked further questions but at no point were they scared. Maybe its because I didn't make a big deal of it.

Thanks mtp... what an insightful look into a DI forum member...very cool!!!..... don't agree with all your views but appreciate that you feel so strongly about them. Once again, thanks for sharing ....enjoyed that clip much.

maybe its subliminal conditioning to get kids used to seeing people with limbs missing, that way they wont object when their fathers, brothers, uncles, aunties, sisters, neighbours come back from Afghanistan (or insert applicable warzone of choice) with injuries, just everyday life.....

It's probably just some more P. correct BBC neo-communist policy and a bunch of thick parents objecting coz they don't understand what's good and bad for their kids...It's not the arm on the presenter they should be worried about; it's the shit in the programs she's on.

It was natural for a very young child to stare. It was very natural to get yelled at for it too.
I never was bothered by kids staring at me, even as a kid. Adults on the other hand...
My kids have seen her (they're 3, 4 and 5 years old), they asked where the rest of her arm was, a simple explanation of "thats how she was born, sometimes peoples bodies don't work properly" sufficed. That is the key to it all. It's not a big deal, it just is. Being born with blond or red hair is the same thing.

i think it's fkin great we can have a laugh about it, because it's no big deal really, and peeps with disabilities are the first to have a laugh, it's the standish offish freakish approach thats out of order.
sometimes i think this country has lost its sense of humour.

Oi....... i watch her with my son, there is nothing ''scary'' about it. :(
if my kids see a woman with one arm on the TV, consistently ..... they are less likely to run or discriminate against anyone who is different in the future..

here here - although knowing that, and doing it to kids and not leaving it to parents, is another example of how brainwashing is done.

I did wonder what would happen if they decided to go with this. Of course they went with it. As it was used to make people think for once as well as be controversal to some. It was also a good litmus test of how people are still prejudice. Now go back 50 years and substitute someone with one arm for a person of colour. To see how absurd all of this is. As for Ross and Brand they were just following a script.

come on mate, these are just off the cuff remarks
I've posted some serious stories on here in the last couple of days and I see everyone pretty much caught up in threads like this. I guess in my mind I'm thinking, "have we really become (even on sites like this) a generation that is more concerned with "off the ball" stories and discuss topics related to reality television programs?"
I know we should have an outlet of fun, please don't mistake my moment of selfishness. And I'd like to apologize if I came off too rude.
But again, I've posted some things that are key topics and almost no one has thought to voice their opinion or share their concern on them in the threads.
Again, I'd like to apologize for my selfishness.

If kids see it daily on TV they will treat it as an absolute normality. Who will then care about other people's problems if they are so "normal". Who will then fight against nuclear proliferation?
A deformity? Oh, that's nothing to worry about. Everybody has it!

Yes I agree, He loves Night garden so I do let him watch that. I was just posting what a little childs natural response was, all kids learn eventually about disability, its down to the parents how they react to it! But at 2 years old they cannot understand these things. He looks worried when shes on screen- Ive told him its ok, some people look different 1 arm, 1 leg whatever, its ok but from what he sees, it doesnt look ok.
Where I come from teachers, while applying for a job, must submit a medical certificate saying that they are not visibly disabled and that their speech is not impaired.
Guess this old regulation must have had a reason.
