'Nothing can harm Iran-Afghan relations'

An Afghan official says nothing can damage Afghan-Iran relations as he values the Islamic Republic's hospitality towards Afghan refugees.

"Afghan clerics appreciate Iran's hospitality towards more than three million Afghan refugees over the years that war had ravaged Afghanistan," said Yousef-Ali Vaezi, an advisor to Afghan President Hamid Karzai in religious affairs.

In a meeting with the head of Iran's national broadcaster, Ezzatollah Zarghami in Kabul on Sunday, he also urged for the further development of relations between the two countries.

Iran has recently donated some USD 560 million to help reconstruct war-battered Afghanistan.

Afghanistan's Minister of Refugees and Returnees, Shir-Mohammad Etibari said in November last year that 2.8 million Afghan nationals are currently living in Iran and 900 thousand of them have an official permit from the Iranian government.

During the past three decades of conflict in Afghanistan, Iran has experienced an influx of refugees from the war-torn neighboring state.

International and humanitarian organizations have praised Iran for allowing large numbers of refugees into the country.
