Tehran welcomes nuclear talks with Washington as long as no precondition is set for the negotiations, says a senior Iranian official.

"A breakthrough in negotiations over Iran's nuclear program is possible and Tehran welcomes unconditional talks with all parties, including the United States," Chairman of Iran's Expediency Council, Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, said on Saturday.

He made the comments in an apparent reference to preconditions set by the US which requires Iran to effectively suspend uranium enrichment before the two sides could hold direct talks.

Iran, however, as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) reserves the right to enrich uranium to a level sustainable for nuclear fuel.

Washington and its allies on the other hand accuse Iran of attempting to develop its enrichment program for military purposes - a claim the Islamic Republic has repeatedly rejected.

Rafsanjani further touched on the necessity of cooperation among countries around the world to overcome the global economic crisis - which has stemmed from the US.

"The root of the problem is much graver than what has so far been announced," Hashemi Rafsanjani explained.
