Home of the Frost Giants
Linda Casselman

From Norse mythology, the Frost Giants are the foes of the gods. From the beginning of creation when the gods ripped apart the evil giant Ymir's body to create the world, these two groups have been enemies, destined to meet again at the end of the world in the great battle of Ragnarok.

( This reads same as Marduk ripping into Tiamats
body and using HER parts to create the veil new ceil [ing] heaven
over Terra and a new SUN and a Moon to reflect energy and hold
the control panel. S. )

All Frost Giants, save Bergelmir and his wife, drowned in the chaos caused by dead Ymir's flooding blood. The pair survived by using a hallowed out tree trunk as a boat and lived on to continue their race of Frost Giants, making their home in Jotunheim.

The Frost Giants personified the icy landscape and the harsh forces of nature, especially of winter, for the northern peoples. They were huge, mighty and menacing, and were a constant threat to the Norse gods, just as the treacherous snowy and icy environment of the north was a constant threat to the Norsemen. Moreover, the Frost Giants took every opportunity to thwart the gods, to harm them or even kill them, just as a lingering winter chill would harm the Norsemen's efforts at cultivation in the Spring. So when cold blasts of air came down upon them or when an avalanche terrorized them, the Norsemen knew to blame the Frost Giants for their misery and misfortune.

The home of the Frost Giants, Jotunheim, is a snowy wasteland on the edge of the sea, a rugged land of misty mountains, vicious blizzards and freezing winds. One of the nine realms in the Norsemen's cosmic tree, Yggdrasil, Jotunheim is situated on the middle level of the great tree, near Midgard, the home of humans, and was the land given to the Frost Giants by Odin and his brothers at creation.

Several giant strongholds make up Jotunheim, but the main citadel of the Frost Giants is Utgard. Carved from blocks of snow and bedecked with glistening icicles, Utgard was a fortress of numbing cold.

Thor, the Frost Giants' greatest enemy, along with his companions Loki and Thialfi, once braved Utgard's freezing battlements in order to undergo several impossible tests. They, of course, failed - they could not outrun thought, drink the sea dry, eat more than a wildfire, or wrestle old age.

Upon leaving Utgard, however, the gods realized that the great
stronghold of the Frost Giants was a grand illusion. :p

Creation

The Creation as seen in the Norse mythology was strange and different from
those of classical Greek mythology. Yet it nevertheless fascinating, because
of the roles played by giants and the gods.

Ymir
Yggdrasill and the Nine Worlds

-----------------------------------------------------------

Ymir ( Tiamat.S.)

There was nothing in the beginning but seemingly almost endless chasm called the Ginnungagap. Ginnungagap was a void like the Greek Chaos. Ginnungagap was bordered by Niflheim, which is the place of darkness and ice, far to the north; and Muspelheim, a place of fire, far to the south. Out of this chaos the first being came into existence from the drop of water when ice from Niflheim and fire from Muspelheim met.

This first being was Ymir, a primeval giant. The frost-giants called him Aurgelmir, but everyone else called him Ymir. Ymir became father of a race of frost-giants.

Ymir was the father of six-headed son that was nourished by a cosmic cow called Audumla. Audumla fed herself by licking the salty rime-stone, until that stone was licked into a shape of man. This stone-man was named Buri and he was the first primeval god. Buri was the father of Bor.

Bor married the giantess Bestla, the daughter of the frost-giant Boltha. And they became the parents of the first Aesir gods Odin, Vili (Hoenir) and Ve.

Ymir grew so large and so evil that the three gods killed Ymir. The blood that flowed from Ymir's wound was so great that almost all the frost giants drowned in the torrent. Only the frost giants Bergelmer and his wife escape the flood in a chest, arriving on the mountain of Jötunheim (Jotunheim), which became the home of the giants.

( Noahs Ark? S )

-----------------------------------------

Yggdrasill and the Nine World

Odin and his brothers then used Ymir's body to create the universe. This universe comprises of nine worlds. They placed the body over the void called Ginnungagap.

They used his flesh for creating the earth and his blood for the sea. His skull, held up by four dwarves (Nordri, Sudri, Austri, and Vestri), was used to create the heaven. Then using sparks from Muspelheim, the gods created the sun, moon and stars. While Ymir's eyebrows were used to create a place where the human race could live in; a place called Midgard (Middle Earth).

(Nordri, Sudri, Austri, and Vestri), Fomalhaut, Aldebaran, Antares, Regulus in the Persian. S . )

A great ash tree called Yggdrasill ("World Tree") ( Cabala S. )supported the universe, with roots that connects the nine worlds together. One root of Yggdrasill extends to Muspelheim ("world of fire"), while another root to Niflheim (the "world of cold" or "of ice"). Niflheim was sometimes confused with Niflhel; Niflhel being known by another name – Hel, was the world of the dead. Hel was sometimes used interchangeably with Niflhel by many writers, as the world of the dead.

The name, Yggdrasill, means "Steed of Ygg". Ygg is another for Odin, which means, "Terrible One". Therefore, the great tree means in English, "Steed of the Terrible One".
( Thor,Zeus,Yahweh S. )Odin's horse is named Sleipnir, but I found no connection between the tree and Sleipnir.

While one root was connected to Asgard (home of the Aesir), another root to Vanaheim (home of the Vanir). The frost giants lived Jötunheim (Jotunheim). Midgard was the world for human.
Alfheim was home of the light elves (ljósálfar). There was also the underground world for the black elves (svartálfar), called Svartalfheim. The dwarves inhabited the world of Nidavellir.

Besides the three roots of Yggdrasill, there were three wells.

The Norns guarded the Urdarbrunnr, which is often known as "Weird's Well", "Wyrd's Well" or "Urda's Well".

The Weird's Well was considered to be very holy. The Norns were Urda or Weird or Wyrd ("Past"), Verdandi ("Present") and Skuld ("Future").

Two swans drink from this well.

The Norns cared for the root near the Weird's Well. Every day, they take water from the holy well, pouring on the root and soil, so that at least this root doesn't rot or decay like the other roots. The mud was white in colour. This white mud caused honeydew to fall to the earth, keeping the valley around the well to be forever green.

( White powder gold, manna, soma, sacred spores, some or all of these.. S)

Each day, the Aesir sit at the court at Weird's Well. Horses take the Aesir to this court. Odin rides Sleipnir. Ten other horses were given names: Glad, Gyllir, Glær, Skeidbrimir, Silfrtopp, Sinir, Gils, Falhofnir, Gulltopp (belonging to Heimdall) and Lettfet. Balder's horse was burned with him. Apart from Sleipnir and Gulltopp, no specific horses were assigned to a particular god. The Aesir must ride across Bifrost (Rainbow Bridge) to reach Weird's Well.

Thor doesn't bother to ride to attend the court. Thor walked and waded through the rivers, Kormat and Ormt and two Kerlaugs.

The second well was Mímisbrunnr (Mimisbrunnr) or the "Well of Mimir", which was also known as the "Well of Knowledge". The well was said to be guarded by the Aesir god named Mimir, a Norse god of wisdom. See the Well of Knowledge in the Search for Wisdom on how Odin pay Mimir to drink from this well.

The third well was called Hvergelmir or the "Roaring Kettle", where a giant serpent called Nidhogg, continuously gnaws at the root of Niflheim. Eventually, Nidhogg will eat its way through the root that will cause Yggdrasill to collapse. But this won't happen until Ragnarok finally arrived. Nidhogg also liked sucking on the bodies of the dead.

( Durga Kali ! S. )

There are many other animals that dwelled around Yggdrasill. Apart from Nidhogg, there were countless snakes living with the great serpent.

From above, four harts or stags feed on the foliage. The harts were given the names of Dain, Duneyr, Durathror and Dvalin.

( Precourser to the myth of Comet, Cupid, Donder und Blitzen who pulled the sled of the chubby little Red and White MUSHROOM who brought JOY to ALL ? S.)

So with Nidhogg feed on one root from above, the stags feed from above, while the side of the tree rotted, Yggdrasill suffered greatly.

( The TREE of LIFE, DNA, genetic codes ! S)

Perched on one of the branches was a great eagle, wise beyond its years. A hawk, called Vedrfolnir sit between the eyes of the eagle. Not only that. There was a squirrel called Ratatosk who seemed to enjoy running up and down the great ash tree, delivering malicious messages between the eagle from above and Nidhogg below.

War of Aesir and Vanir

A war broke out between the Aesir and Vanir, when the Aesir had tortured the Vanir goddess, Gullveig.

Gullveig loved gold. It was all she talked about. Gold, gold, GOLD! The Aesir were tiring of hearing her incessant chatter about gold. They bound Gullveig in Odin's hall and pierced her with spears. Three times they burned Gullveig in a magical fire, but each time she was reborn.

The Vanir demanded reparation from the Aesir for torturing their kind – they wanted equal status to their rival – instead of meet the Vanir's demand, the Aesir waged war against the more peaceful Vanir.

The Vanir, however, were gaining the upper hand in the war. The warlike Aesir were suffering one defeat after another, before they agreed to end hostility and grant the Vanir, equal status.

The peace was followed by strange ritual where the two sides spat in a vessel. From the combined saliva in the vessel created a new being – Kvasir was born.

( ADAMIC MAN S.)

This was followed by hostage exchange, to ensure that peace was kept on both sides. The Vanir Njörd (Njord) and his son Freyr were the Aesir's hostages accompanied by Kvasir, the wisest Van. The Vanir received Hoenir (or Vili) and Mimir (the wisest of the Aesir) as hostages.

At first the Vanir were happy with exchange and thought that Hoenir was as wise as Mimir, until they realised that Hoenir was not very smart at all. Mimir had been secretly giving Hoenir advice. The Vanir felt cheated. They had Mimir decapitated before returning the head to the Aesir.

( John the Baptist ? S. )
The Aesir did not retaliate in kind. Odin had the head preserved and used it to gain knowledge. (See Head of Mimir and the Mead of Poetry, in the Search for Wisdom page.)

The Vanir, Njörd and his son and daughter, Freyr and Freyja, were greatly honoured by the Aesir, by giving them places among them as Aesir. However, the mother of Freyr and Freyja was Njörd's own sister (who was unnamed). Incest and marriage between siblings were allowed in Vanheim, but not so in Asgard. So when Njörd went to Asgard with his children, he had to give up his sister-wife.

Njörd would return home to Vanaheim when the Aesir gods fight the frost-giants at Ragnarok, according to the short passage in Vafthrudnismal (Lay of Vafthrudnir).

I found this article written in swedish by Varg Vikernes. I will try to translate the most interesting parts to english. (I hate translating, never was any good at it in school). Forgive me for any misspellings and grammatical errors. :D

"I believe in our gods as archetypes of our blood, as symbols of right and wrong, as historical persons, as alien beings, as forces of nature and as physical beings that exists even to this day.

Thor is the protector of the people. Look at the planet Jupiter (the Roman name for Thor) for instance. The planet is red, just as Thors beard and Jupiter is protecting mother earth from getting hit by meteorites. Thor has a belt named Megingjord, this belt gives him twice his strength. Sixteen moons surrounds Jupiter, the same number of sons Thor has according to norse mythology."

"The age of the gods is told by the size of the planets. The Sun (Sól) is the biggest and the oldest, while Pluto (Hel) is the smallest and the youngest. Mars (Tyr) is the one planet standing out here. While growing up something happened and his growth was inhibited. (Remember Tyr lost his hand while trying to tame Fenrir (the wolf of dread).

The planets albedo (gratitude?), their ability to reflect the the light that shines upon them (their ability send the same love back) - does correspond with the impression our mythology gives us of the gods. Merkurius (Loke) the heartless has albedo 0.1 (10 % of the light is reflected), while Venus (Frigg) the godess of love has an albedo of 0.76. The god of war Tyr (Mars) has an albedo of 0.06. Jupiter (Thor) albedo 0.51, Saturnus (Heimdall) albedo 0.61, Uranus (Odin) and Neptunus (Njord) has an albedo of 0.35. Pluto = 0.4.

Neptunus (Njord) have two moons - Nereid and Triton. In the mythology Njord have two children, Freja and Frej. Uranus (Odin) have fifteen moons (the names of his 15 children is left out here due too space). Mars (Tyr) have two moons and Saturnus (Heimdall) have thirteen moons. But here it ends. Our knowledge of the mythology is is not sufficient enough. Perhaps the stepson of Thor "Ull" is one of Tyrs sons. This we do not know, the Christians slayed the ones who knew. Murdered the ones who did want to know and tell others of our ancient knowledge. Only bits of that knowledge remain to this day.

I mentioned Thors belt Megingjord, the ring of moons circulating Jupiter. Other planets have rings aswell. Saturnus (Heimdall) have 5 big, broad rings (witch are in turn built up by almost 1000 small rings). Their origin and function is still a mystery to us today. Uranus (Odin) have either 9 or 11 rings (different astronomy books tell us different things here). We know the story of Draupnir, the ring who drips 8 new rings every ninth night. If we add Draupnir we then have 9 rings. Neptunus (njord) have two rings but their meaning/purpose we do not know.

This is ONE way of looking at the gods. I believe all of this should be taken in consideration in the "serious" research of astronomy and astrology. We can learn much of reality, our origin and our future by study of the mythology. We have a lot of important information to collect. The gods have many faces and shapes. Only ONE thing is for sure. They are meant to help us in our journey to Asgard."

Thank you Charles D Ward

Varg Vikernes is well remembered in Pagan communities.

If time is a spiral ( Starhawks books ) then all these myths were and
are being lived in every moment and none are in the far distant past at all.

IMV 2012 will end this distortion of how we see time and all that
was and will be can be seen as do some already see in visions quests.

Metagenetics

GENETICS & BEYOND

Metagenetics - An Update

Stephen A. McNallen

Reprint from RUNESTONE #26, Summer 1999

Back in the early 1980’s, I wrote a short article in The Runestone called “Metagenetics.” The shock wave from those three pages has caused more controversy than anything else I have ever written. The mere mention of metagenetics causes some people to go into a rage and a rant - so, both to inform my friends and infuriate my enemies, I decided it was time for an update on the subject!

In the original piece, metagenetics was presented as the idea that “ancestry matters - that there are spiritual and metaphysical implications to heredity.” I tied together such varied topics as Jung’s theories of archetypes, rebirth in the family line, psychic links between twins, and the Norse concept of the soul to support that statement.

The basic outlines remain the same. However, I have made refinements, added information from British biologist Rupert Sheldrake as well as other writers in psychology and the life sciences, and generally thought a great deal about just what metagenetics means in the long run.

If I had to modify the definition of metagenetics after all these years, I’d say that it was “the hypothesis that there are spiritual or metaphysical implications to physical relatedness among humans which correlate with, but go beyond, the known limits of genetics.” This is more complicated than the simple sentence from the 1980’s, but it is somewhat more exact - and it opens the possibility that the mechanism involved might not be as simple as information stored in the DNA molecule.

The evidence in support of metagenetics is drawn from several disciplines, and I won’t go into it here. I am writing a book which will set it out in great detail. In this article, instead, I will mention some of the main features of the hypothesis, and then list a number of implications.

Features of the Metagenetic Hypothesis

Metagenetics is characterized by -

Relatedness - It describes a connection, independent of time and space, which links human beings. (The general principles governing metagenetics also apply to the animals, plants, other organic kingdoms, and indeed all self-organizing systems to include crystals and molecules. Metagenetics, though, is a subset of this grander scheme and applies specifically to humans and their spirituality.)

Similarity - We are used to things being related in time and space, but this is not essential to the operation of metagenetics. Instead, metagenetics says that people who are genetically related to each other share a non-physical bond that is not dependent on location or time, and that the closeness of that bond is determined by the degree of similarity. Our language unconsciously expresses that idea, as we talk about being “close” or “distant” relatives.

Hierarchy - This is implied by the idea of similarity, described above. All humans are related, and for that matter it is true that we are “kin to all life,” as some folks are fond of saying. However, we are not equally related to all. Within the broad circle that is the human family there is a collection of concentric circles representing the many Folksouls - and even this is no neat and tidy arrangement. Individual families, clans and tribes have their own subdivisions or “mini-Folksouls,” and the whole is dynamic and shifting.

Holism - The components that make up the individual human being are best seen as comprising a whole. This is typically represented as body, mind, and spirit, though the psychosomatic (mind-body) complex in traditional Germanic lore is considerably more complicated than this. People commonly acknowledge that the body and mind affect each other, but fewer of them understand that the body (to include the brain, the nervous system, and the apparatus of heredity) is also connected to the spiritual or religious.

Spirituality - Relatedness and similarity influence the temperament, values, psychic connection, probable reincarnation, and the general tone of spirituality or religion. Some of these things - temperament and values, in particular - may have their origin in the actual coding of DNA, but the mechanism for the other connections may not be within the realm of the physical sciences as they are presently understood. There seems to be a continuum at work, and it may be represented like this:

Implications of Metagenetics

Several things quickly become obvious.

Ancestry matters. Most Asatruar will agree with that statement, but fewer will understand that the ancestors are with us, now and always, because of the time-transcending nature of the metagenetic bond. To the extent that rebirth occurs within the family line, we are those ancestors, manifested again in Midgard! Furthermore, that bond is special - it is closer than our bond to non-ancestors.

We are not “one.” Although there is a level on which every person is connected through the collective unconscious of humanity as a whole, the closeness of the connections varies immensely. Indeed, to some extent we are linked to all life - but that hardly causes us to value protozoa, goldfish, and camels as much as we do our brother or our father! The degree of connection is determined by similarity.

There are no solitary rituals. All our deeds feed back into the collective unconscious (C.G. Jung) or the morphic field (Rupert Sheldrake) - or in traditional Asatru terms, the Well of Urth. It seems to be that the more intense the emotion accompanying the deed, or the more symbolically alive an action is, the more it will affect all those who are members of the group in question. Our blots, our oaths of might, and our other exchanges with our Gods and Goddesses, then, can be expected to influence all Asatruar, and all our brothers and sisters of European descent, in a fairly immediate way. A whole nest of hierarchies are jostled by all our significant acts.

Our religion is a function of who we are, not just what we believe. Since the human being is a holistic entity, our spirituality cannot be considered something apart from our physical ancestry. In terms of both genetics and metagenetics, our ancestors are encoded into our very beings. From values and temperament - which have been shown to correlate statistically with heredity - to the deeper issues of spirit, our forefathers and foremothers continue to influence us. It seems reasonable, then, to predict that people will tend to be most fulfilled by the religious and spiritual paths of their ancestors. Properly presented, the ancient ways of one’s people should exert a powerful draw on the individual.

The beliefs of our ancestors are largely confirmed by modern psychology and the biological sciences. Most especially, the Jungian collective unconscious and Sheldrake’s hypotheses concerning “morphic fields” and “morphic resonance” are very close to the Germanic ideas surrounding the Well of Urth, in which orlog or “fate” is laid.

Metagenetics - an Evolving Concept

Metagenetics, then, continues to mature as new information becomes available. Far from remaining static over the last decade and a half, it has incorporated new evidence and has found validation in the writings of other scientists as time has gone by.

The transcendental importance of the ancestral bond has always been sensed by Asatru, and by other native religions around the world. We who acknowledge that bond now have striking validation of what our inner voice has told us all along!

THE LAW OF THE UNITY of OPPOSITES

From their search for the laws of the universe the Taoists discovered within the apparent chaos of nature a predictable and rhythmic cycle - Yin & Yang. Because The law of Yin & Yang can be applied to anything in existence it is a very powerful tool of analysis and understanding. There are five points to the law of Yin & Yang.

1) OPPOSITION
Everything has two opposite aspects. Yin & Yang struggle with and control each other.

2) INTER-DEPENDENCE
Yin & Yang define each other and therefore one cannot exist without the other. (If there is no down, which way is up?)

3) MUTUAL CONSUMPTION & SUPPORT
Yin & Yang each give of themselves to nourish the other.

4) INTER-TRANSFORMATION
Yin can become Yang and Yang can become Yin. In fact, this is inevitable if the growth of one or the other is uncontrolled.

5) INFINITE SUBDIVISIBILITY
There is always a bit of one in the other. Anything can be subdivided again and again.

For many of us the Universe is based on two electric energies eternally attracting and repelling each other, called among some esotericists
the SPIRAL DANCE as in the now cult status book by Starhawk.

The Spiral Dance - Special 20th Anniversary Edition

A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Goddess.

by Starhawk

The twentieth anniversary edition of The Spiral Dance celebrates the pivotal role the book has had in bringing Goddess worship to the religious forefront. This bestselling classic is both an unparalleled reference on the practices and philosophies of Witchcraft and a guide to the life-affirming ways in which readers can turn to the Goddess to deepen their sense of personal pride, develop their inner power, and integrate mind, body, and spirit. Starhawk's brilliant, comprehensive overview of the growth, suppression, and modern-day reemergence of Wicca as a Goddess-worshipping religion has left an indelible mark on the feminist spiritual consciousness.

In a new introduction, Starhawk reveals the ways in which Goddess religion and the practice of ritual have adapted and developed over the last twenty years, and she reflects on the ways in which these changes have influenced and enhanced her original ideas. In the face of an ever-changing world, this invaluable spiritual guidebook is more relevant than ever.
