I know its probably a stupid question but If I was a freeman could I continue to work for the local council?
I think I know the answer already but thought I would ask for views.
I've worked for them for 9 years but never signed a contract, would that make a diffrence?:p

There are no stupid questions; only those to which you already know the answers.
Rob Menard mentions a guy working for the Post Office in Canada, retaining the use of his equivalent of a NINO.
I've been busying myself with this very question for a while now.
It seems to me the only way to do it is have a 'supply of services' contract with them, whereby YOU contract yourself to perform labour at specific hours.
There is an amendment to taxation law that says something along the lines of 'if you're (self-) employed with the same company, and only that company, for a certain length of time, the company is obliged to treat you, for accounting purposes at least, as an employee and to retain tax and NI contributions on a PAYE basis.
(Article 32? Act 32? Sorry; it's slipped my mind for the moment.)
If you work for someone over regular hours (32-40), for a month, you have a contract.
If you work for someone for over a year, you have the right to dispute any deep grievance, including unfair dismissal, in front of a Tribunal.
In your particular case, you seem to be in a strong position.
Have you (seriously) considered having the necessary conversation with the mayor/head councillor, to renegotiate your position, and the reasons for that?
I don't envy you.
Good luck.

The council changed my contract last summer due to "single status". They called it termination and re-engagement of something like that.
I didn't agree with a £4000 pay cut so I didn't sign the contract they offered and am still working under duress along with most of the other council workers.
Part of me would love to fuck with their heads with this Freeman path if it was possible.
So much corruption in this council it makes me sick.

Hey, sorry to interrupt.
I have some questions and was wondeing if anybody could help point me in the right direction. Any assistance will be much appreciated.
With regards to owning your own business, I have a small shop and as such am the proprietor, I do not own the premises but have an extremely dated lease from a 'rigsby' character type landlord. I currently live above the shop premises in the flat of this delapodated old building. The business isn't Ltd it's listed as a sole trader, i was wondering what kind of contracts i have gotten my strawman into, I was wondering whether all the astronomical bills for council tax, electricity, water etc (that seem to be unjustifiably high) and threatening to swamp me are all liable because i'm actually acting in commerce so to speak, also has this blurred the devide between myself and my strawman as i'm continually acting in commerce through living and running my shop.
I have obviously gotten myself into allsorts of trouble signing conracts and legal documentation for the busines, puchased a truck for the business on finance, applied for loans in the past for the business. Things aren't drastic just yet but the more aware of the current climate i become and the more i awaken to the truth the more it seems unsustainable to be doing this. But i seem to be in really deep what with all this business palava. I am a spiritual being, infinite consciousness playing the role of shop keeper. I live in the moment, i enjoy all the uplifting contact and conversations and chance meetings that the shop affords me, I get true pleasure from being able to help somebody, to do a favour in my community, it may only be small things here and there, but they are the real driving force behind my motivation to open. The shop matters not. Only the experiences that come to be through it.
Just how tied up into the corperate commercial system is someone when they are regiseterd V.A.T registered Commercially insured, registered commercial vehicle owner and everything else that goes with 'trading'?
Thanks for listening, Luke

Hi Luke,
You would benefit enormously at this point to sit down, take a few hours, have a brew and a fatty and with pen and paper (not computer) make a list of what you understand now, and compare it to what you thought before. I understand your frustration, but see it as a result of not properly outlining, mapping, listing your understanding.
Its all messed up ain't it? I have been there. You have to get through it. You will get through it. If you can, sit with no more then two others and break it down. Do it alone if need be or you prefer. Start anywhere at all. Do not try to make them make sense relative to each other. Think of it like dumping a box of puzzle pieces on the table, first you turn them over right.
DO that simple process now and just start counting, listing, expressing your understanding. You will arrange it into a more logical flow later. Your frustration will disappear, and you will have fun, and you will start to find the path and process.
Peace eh?
Rob
