In the late 1980's, perfectly preserved 3000-year-old mummies began appearing in a remote Chinese desert. They had long reddish-blond hair, European features and didn't appear to be the ancestors of modern-day Chinese people.

Tests say the Beauty of Loulan is of Indo-European descent

In a find that could turn conventional history on its head, scientists using genetic testing have discovered that Caucasians lived in western China's Tarim Basin a thousand years before East Asians arrived.

Unearthed lying on her side as though in sleep, a single tuft of red hair falling across her head and ragged moccasins on her feet, the Beauty of Loulan is considered to be one of the best preserved mummies ever found.

Roughly 3800-years-old and discovered in the sands of Xinjiang province in western China, her emaciated features betray a facial bone structure that is surprisingly similar to Caucasian looking women.


A team of American and Chinese researchers working in a laboratory in Sweden used DNA samples to date and profile her mummy, confirming she and other mummies are of Indo-European descent.

Project leader Victor Mair told Aljazeera.net his work on helping to fill in the genetic jigsaw puzzle of human migration is "extremely important because they link up eastern and western Eurasia at a formative stage of civilisation (Bronze Age and Early Iron Age) in a much closer way than has ever been done before".

Central Asian migrants
A professor of Chinese language and literature at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, Mair and his researchers now believe that the mummies' ancestors migrated from Central Asia into the Tarim Basin approximately 5000 years ago.

Crossing the forbidding Pamir Mountains, which border modern day Pakistan and China, they then settled on the edge of the basin before slowly fanning out across the Taklamankan desert.

In more recent times the location for China's nuclear weapons tests, Mair wrote, "the fact people can subsist in the Tarim Basin at all is due to their intrepidity and adaptability".

Though inhospitable, the dry atmosphere and alkaline soils are a key factor in the preservation of hundreds of mummies discovered there since the 1970s, including the extremely well-preserved 3000-year-old Cherchen Man.

Nationalist mummies?
First investigating the mummies in the late 1980s when he came across them in a museum in Xinjiang, it was only recently that Mair was allowed to remove bone samples for testing overseas.

Earlier tests on the clothing of the mummies had already linked the particular twill weave of their garments to similar textile designs found in ancient tombs in central Europe.

But what was still needed was a DNA test to confirm everyone's suspicions.

Often hesitant to let foreign researchers take archaeological remnants out of the country after witnessing the pillaging of national monuments by foreign troops and archaeologists in the nineteenth century, the Chinese government has also been reluctant to release the samples for fears they would bolster the claims of Uighur groups seeking independence from China.


Though unlikely candidates for nationalistic ping-pong balls, the almost 4000-year-old corpses have become a symbol for activists hoping to discredit China's claim to the region.

In 2004, Chinese scientists at Jilin University in eastern China also concluded that the mummies' DNA came from Indo-Europeans, and not East Asians.

Dru Gladney, a Xinjiang specialist at the University of Hawaii, told Aljazeera.net that when the mummies were first found, "Uighur nationalists hoped this would irrefutably document that they were the indigenous peoples of Xinjiang rather than the Chinese".

"In terms of contemporary nationalism it really is irrelevant. Chinese claims are from the Han dynasty while Uighurs want to claim direct descent from the Uighur kingdom. It is always fallacious to use these kinds of materials to substantiate contemporary claims," he adds.
Politics.

Campaigning for an independent East Turkestan - a reference to a short period in modern history when the region declared independence from China - Uighur websites have claimed the mummies as the forefathers to a Uighur kingdom founded in the seventh century BC in an area now straddling modern day Mongolia and Xinjiang.

Uighur activists believe the mummies undermine China's ties to the region, which Beijing says were cemented as far back as the Han Dynasty, (206BC-AD220).

Comparing the mummies' DNA with that of present day inhabitants of the Tarim Basin, Mair found the modern day Uighur, Kazakh and Kirghiz ethnic groups did carry some genetic similarities with the mummies, but "no direct links".

"Central Asia is a zone of admixture, not a heartland or reservoir for genetic diversity," wrote Mair.

Science beats politics
An apparent victory for science over politics, in recent years a cooling of rhetoric over the nationalistic relevance of 4000-year-old human remains has meant that scientists have been able to carry out further tests.

Writing how "any attempt at a serious and impartial inquiry into the origins and identity of the mummies must simply remain oblivious to such tendentiousness and calumniation", Mair told Aljazeera.net that earlier attempts to take samples had met with resistance.

On one trip collecting 52 samples from the mummies, officials suddenly changed their minds and would only permit him to take five out of the country.

Mair says much still remains unknown about the mummies' backgrounds and is hoping with the lifting of political red tape, he may finally unlock mysteries buried for thousands of years.

An international group of archaeologists has unearthed a well-preserved, 2,500-year-old mummy frozen in the snowcapped mountains of Mongolia complete with blond hair, tattoos and a felt hat.

The president of the German Archaeological Institute, Hermann Parzinger, hailed the "fabulous find" at a press conference to present the 28-member team's discovery in Berlin.

The Scythian warrior was found in June at a height of 2,600 meters (8,500 feet) in the Altay Mountains in an intact burial mound or kurgan.

Parzinger said the tomb was practically untouched when the team discovered it.

"We just had to sweep away some dust and could begin," he said.

Researchers said the most striking feature about the man was his light blond hair, which Parzinger acknowledged may have yellowed after his death.

The man, who was apparently well-off, was cloaked in a beaver-skin coat with sable trim and sheep's wool lining that was in remarkably good condition, and still intact skin on his upper body revealed tattoos.

Two horses with elaborately decorated saddles and bridles, weapons and wooden, clay and animal horn vessels were placed in the tomb alongside the corpse to accompany the warrior into the next life.

The recovered items are currently in storage in Ulan Bator. Parzinger said even the contents of the horses' stomachs would be examined to offer insights into the region's vegetation two centuries before Christ.

Parzinger said that until now remains of the Scythians, who were Iranian nomadic peoples, had only been found on the Russian side of the Altays. He said the new find showed that their territory was much broader than first thought.

He said the ice had helped preserve the mummy and his belongings and noted that global warming also posed a threat to such archaeological finds. He said that if the trend continues, in 20 to 30 years there would be no more ice kurgans.

The mummified body of a Cherchen woman from about 1000 B.C. was excavated in the Chinese village of Zaghunluq, in the Taklimakan Desert. She stood more than 6 feet tall and was buried in a red dress with white deerskin boots. Though found in China, she was Caucasian, not of the Asian race. Hers and other mummified remains found under the desert sands in China are a source of great mystery.

When Kylie Hodgson gave birth to twin daughters by caesarean section, she was just relieved that they had arrived safely.

It was only when the midwife handed them over for her to hold that she noticed the difference between them.

Remee, who weighed 5lb 15oz, was blonde and fair skinned. Her sister Kian, born a minute later weighing 6lb, was black.

'Our two gorgeous little girls'

"It was a shock when I realised that my twins were two different colours," said Kylie, 19. "But it doesn't matter to us - they are just our two gorgeous little girls."

The amazing conception happened after two eggs were fertilised at the same time in the womb.

Both Kylie and her partner Remi Horder, 17, are of mixed race. Their mothers are both white and their fathers are black.

According to the Multiple Births Foundation, baby Kian must have inherited the black genes from both sides of the family, whilst Remee inherited the white ones.

Kylie, from Nottingham, discovered she was pregnant in the summer of 2004 and a scan at the Queen's Medical Centre revealed that twins were on the way.

"It was a shock at first to discover I was expecting as we hadn't been trying for a family," she said I had my 14-week scan and the sonographer ran the scanner over my stomach and announced that I was carrying twins.

"We couldn't believe it. Neither of us could take our eyes off the scanner - you could just see two of everything, even the outline of their little noses. We were both overwhelmed."

The twins were born by caesarean in April last year because one of the girls was lying in an awkward position in the womb.

"I didn't see them at first," added their mother. "They were both whisked away to be checked over and then the midwife came back and placed them both in my arms.

"I noticed that both of them had beautiful blue eyes, but whilst Remee was blonde, Kian's hair was black and she had darker skin.

"It seemed strange, but I was feeling so ill that I didn't really take it in at that stage."

The next day she mentioned the colour difference to her mother, who told her that Remee's skin would darken as she grew older.

But as the weeks passed, Remee became lighter still while Kian went darker. And while Remee's eyes stayed blue, Kian's turned brown.

"There are some similarities between them," said their mother. "They both love apples and grapes, and their favourite television programme is Teletubbies.

"If they haven't seen each other for a few hours, they are so pleased to see each other and will hold out their arms, wanting to hug each other. And their smiles just light up their faces.

"I'll explain it all to them when they get older about why they look so different."

Million to one odds

The odds against of a mixed race couple having twins of dramatically different colour are a million to one.

Skin colour is believed to be determined by up to seven different genes working together.

If a woman is of mixed race, her eggs will usually contain a mixture of genes coding for both black and white skin.

Similarly, a man of mixed race will have a variety of different genes in his sperm. When these eggs and sperm come together, they will create a baby of mixed race.

But, very occasionally, the egg or sperm might contain genes coding for one skin colour. If both the egg and sperm contain all white genes, the baby will be white. And if both contain just the versions necessary for black skin, the baby will be black.

For a mixed-race couple, the odds of either of these scenarios is around 100 to one. But both scenarios can occur at the same time if the woman conceives non-identical twins, another 100 to one chance.

This involves two eggs being fertilised by two sperm at the same time, which also has odds of around 100 to one.

If a sperm containing all-white genes fuses with a similar egg and a sperm coding for purely black skin fuses with a similar egg, two babies of dramatically different colours will be born.

The odds of this happening are 100 x 100 x 100 - a million to one.

now lets say an asian is of fair skinnned, he marries/breeds with another asian who has fair skin, or fair skin genes in her genetics. this increases the chance of having fair skinned kids. then these fair skinned kids when older breed with other fair skinned asians. hence have more fair skinned kids, genratiuon after genertion. in europe a small population had time to breed with eachother, with migration etc adding genetic diversity. so over time, you get enough white people. then when you, well the elite start killing brown people, stealing their countries and supplanting the indigenous with immigrants from europe. you take over the countries, and soon are the majority. you are not the global majoirty though, you are 15% of thr world population and are declining.

Introduction

The aryan invasion theory has been one of the most controversial historical topics for well over a century. However, it should be pointed out that it remains just that – a theory. To date no hard evidence has proven the aryan invasion theory to be fact. In this essay we will explain the roots of this hypothesis and how, due to recent emergence of new evidence over the last couple of decades, the validity of the aryan invasion theory has been seriously challenged.

It is indeed ironic that the origin of this theory does not lie in Indian records, but in 19th Century politics and German nationalism. No where in the Vedas, Puranas or Itihasas is there any mention of a Migration or Invasion of any kind. In 1841 M.S. Elphinstone, the first governor of the Bombay Presidency, wrote in his book History of India:

'It is opposed to their (Hindus) foreign origin, that neither in the Code (of Manu) nor, I believe, in the Vedas, nor in any book that is certainly older than the code, is there any allusion to a prior residence or to a knowledge of more than the name of any country out of India. Even mythology goes no further than the Himalayan chain, in which is fixed the habitation of the gods... .To say that it spread from a central point is an unwarranted assumption, and even to analogy; for, emigration and civilization have not spread in a circle, but from east to west. Where, also, could the central point be, from which a language could spread over India, Greece, and Italy and yet leave Chaldea, Syria and Arabia untouched? There is no reason whatever for thinking that the Hindus ever inhabited any country but their present one, and as little for denying that they may have done so before the earliest trace of their records or tradition.’

The Birth of a Misconception
Interest in the field of Indology during the 19th Century was of mixed motivations. Many scholars such as August Wilhelm von Schlegal, Hern Wilhelm von Humboldt, and Arthur Schopenhauer lauded praise upon the Vedic literatures and their profound wisdom, others were less than impressed. To accept that there was an advanced civilization outside the boundaries of Europe, at a time before the Patriarchs Abraham and Moses had made their covenant with the Almighty was impossible to conceive of for most European scholars, who harbored a strong Christian tendency. Most scholars of this period were neither archeologists nor historians in the strict sense of the word. Rather, they were missionaries paid by their governments to establish western cultural and racial superiority over the subjugated Indian citizens, through their study of the indigenous religious texts. Consequently, for racial, political and religious reasons, early European indologists created a myth that still survives to this day.

It was established by linguists that Sanskrit, Iranian and European languages all belonged to the same family, categorizing them as ‘Indo-European’ languages. It was assumed that all these people originated from one homeland where they spoke a common language (which they called ‘Proto-Indo-European’ or PIE) which later developed into Sanskrit, Latin, Greek etc. They then needed to ascertain where this homeland was. By pure speculation, it was proposed that this homeland was either southeast Europe or Central Asia.


Harappa and Mohenjo-daro
The discovery of ruins in the Indus Valley (Harappa and Mohenjo-daro) was considered by indologists like Wheeler as proof of their conjectures – that a nomadic tribe from foreign lands had plundered India. It was pronounced that the ruins dated back to a time before the Aryan Invasion, although this was actually never verified. By assigning a period of 200 years to each of the several layers of the pre-Buddhist Vedic literature, indologists arrived at a time frame of somewhere between 1500 and 1000BC for the Invasion of the Aryans. Using Biblical chronology as their sheet anchor, nineteenth century indologists placed the creation of the world at 4000BC 1 and Noah’s flood at 2500BC. They thus postulated that the Aryan Invasion could not have taken place any time before 1500BC.

Archeologists excavating the sites at Harappa and Mohenjo-daro found human skeletal remains; this seemed to them to be undeniable evidence that a large-scale massacre had taken place in these cities by the invading Aryan hordes. Prof. G. F. Dales (Former head of department of South-Asian Archaeology and Anthropology, Berkeley University, USA) in his ‘The Mythical Massacre at Mohenjo-daro’, states the following about this evidence:

‘What of these skeletal remains that have taken on such undeserved importance? Nine years of extensive excavations at Mohenjo-daro (1922-31) - a city of three miles in circuit - yielded the total of some 37 skeletons, or parts thereof, that can be attributed with some certainty to the period of the Indus civilizations. Some of these were found in contorted positions and groupings that suggest anything but orderly burials. Many are either disarticulated or incomplete. They were all found in the area of the Lower Town - probably the residential district. Not a single body was found within the area of the fortified citadel where one could reasonably expect the final defense of this thriving capital city to have been made…Where are the burned fortresses, the arrow heads, weapons, pieces of armor, the smashed chariots and bodies of the invaders and defenders? Despite the extensive excavations at the largest Harappan sites, there is not a single bit of evidence that can be brought forth as unconditional proof of an armed conquest and the destruction on the supposed scale of the Aryan Invasion.’
Evidence from the Vedas

It was therefore concluded that light-skinned nomads from Central Asia who wiped out the indigenous culture and enslaved or butchered the people, imposing their alien culture upon them had invaded the Indian subcontinent. They then wrote down their exploits in the form of the Rg Veda. This hypothesis was apparently based upon references in the Vedas that point to a conflict between the light-skinned Aryans and the dark-skinned Dasyus. 2 This theory was strengthened by the archeological discoveries in the Indus Valley of the charred skeletal remains that we have mentioned above. Thus the Vedas became nothing more than a series of poetic tales about the skirmishes between two barbaric tribes.

However, there are other references in the Rg Veda 3 that point to India being a land of mixed races. The Rg Veda also states that "We pray to Indra to give glory by which the Dasyus will become Aryans." 4 Such a statement confirms that to be an Aryan was not a matter of birth.

An inattentive skimming through the Vedas has resulted in a gross misinterpretation of social and racial struggles amongst the ancient Indians. North Aryans were pitted against the Southern Dravidians, high-castes against low-castes, civilized orthodox Indians against barbaric heterodox tribals. The hypothesis that of racial hatred between the Aryans and the dark-skinned Dasyus has no sastric foundation, yet some ‘scholars’ have misinterpreted texts to try to prove that there was racial hatred amongst the Aryans and Dravidians (such as the Rg Veda story of Indra slaying the demon Vrta 5 ).

Based on literary analysis, many scholars including B.G. Tilak, Dayananda Saraswati and Aurobindo dismissed any idea of an Aryan Invasion. For example, if the Aryans were foreign invaders, why is it that they don’t name places outside of India as their religious sites? Why do the Vedas only glorify holy places within India?

Max Mueller : What is an ‘Aryan’?

The Sanskrit word ‘Aryan’ refers to one who is righteous and noble. It is also used in the context of addressing a gentleman (Arya-putra, Aryakanya etc). 6 Nowhere in the Vedic literature is the word used to denote race or language. This was a concoction by Max Mueller who, in 1853, introduced the word ‘Arya’ into the English language as referring a particular race and language. He did this in order to give credibility to his Aryan race theory (see Part 2). However in 1888, when challenged by other eminent scholars and historians, Mueller could see that his reputation was in jeopardy and made the following statement, thus refuting his own theory -

"I have declared again and again that if I say Aryas, I mean neither blood nor bones, nor hair, nor skull; I mean simply those who speak an Aryan language...to me an ethnologist who speaks of Aryan race, Aryan blood, Aryan eyes and hair, is as great a sinner as a linguist who speaks of a dolichocephalic dictionary or a brachycephalic grammar."

But the dye had already been cast! Political and Nationalist groups in Germany and France exploited this racial phenomenon to propagate the supremacy of an assumed Aryan race of white people. Later, Adolf Hitler used this ideology to the extreme for his political hegemony and his barbaric crusade to terrorize Jews, Slavs and other racial minorities, culminating in the holocaust of millions of innocent people.

According to Mueller’s etymological explanation of ‘Aryan’, the word is derived from ‘ar’ (to plough, to cultivate). Therefore Arya means ‘a cultivator, or farmer’. This is opposed to the idea that the Aryans were wandering nomads. V.S. Apte's Sanskrit-English Dictionary relates the word Arya to the root ‘r-’ to which the prefix ‘a’ has been added in order to give a negating meaning. Therefore the meaning of Arya is given as ‘excellent, best’, followed by ‘respectable’ and as a noun, ‘master, lord, worthy, honorable, excellent,’ ‘upholder of Arya values, and further: teacher, employer, master, father-in-law, friend.’

Viking Age Inca Indian Found in Norwegian Burial Ground?

Skull fragments from the find, (Click for larger image)It has long been known that Viking explorers, traders, and settlers made their way across the North Atlantic, first to the North Sea Islands, then to Iceland and Greenland, and even to the Newfoundland area of North America.

But the accepted narrative is that the forays into the American continent proper were brief, and their contact with the native peoples there was nasty, brutish, and short. But a 1000 year old skeleton found in a burial ground in Norway shows traits usually only found in Inca Indians.

The sagas of the of the Scandinavian voyages during the Viking Age, written mostly in Iceland some time after the events, recorded that Leif Eriksson, son of Erik the Red, who had discovered Greenland, made landfall on what he called Vinland, probably modern day Newfoundland around the year 1000 AD.

These voyages were part of that last outcrop of the great migrations of peoples that had once overwhelmed the Roman Empire. Scandinavians, starved for arable land in their native countries, or exiled by the political turmoil leading to the unification of these countries into what was to become the kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, went abroad looking for opportunities elsewhere, whether that be through trade, settlement, or plunder.

(Click for larger image)The Swedes tended to go east, across the Baltic Sea and down the river systems of eastern Europe and present day Russia, which they had a pivotal role in founding. The Danes went mainly to England and France, where their descendants would settle the region of Normandy. While the Norwegians, seafarers by nature, due to their long coastline and lack of farmland, struck out across the North Sea, to the North of England, Scotland, Ireland, and to the islands in the north Atlantic, and eventually North America.

We know that they encountered natives on their voyages there. But how they could have come across a south American Indian, or a he make his way to the north east coastal regions of Canada, would seem to defy imagination.

Archaeologists working on the conservation of the ruins of the old St. Nicolas church at Borgarsyssel in the Norwegian city of Sarpsborg came across some skeletal remains by accident, as they were removing some rose bushes. "As we pulled out the rose bushes, bones just poured out," archaeologist at Borgarsyssel Museum, Mona Beate Buckholm told Norwegian Public Broadcasting NRK.

"A particular bone at the back of the head was not fused. This is an inherited trait found almost exclusively among the Incas of Peru," Buckholm added. To this day, no other example of this trait has been found in Norway. "While it is tempting to speculate, seeing as St. Nicolas is the patron saint of sailors, it's hard to imagine a Peruvian making his way here at the time. This is quite puzzling."

As one would almost expect with such a maritime culture, there have been finds in the past of people from far off lands ending up in ancient Scandinavia. One such example was the recent DNA evidence that one of the women buried in the royal tomb at Oseberg, one of the most famous Viking Age finds of all time, turned out to be of Black Sea origin. But this would be on another scale entirely.

If, and this is still a massive if at this time, further tests and excavations could turn up corroborating evidence for an American link, and the find turns out to not be another Piltdown Man, or simply a very anomalous individual, it would be a sensational discovery, turning established views on pre-Columbian contacts between Europe and the Americas on their head. Right now though, that is speculation more fit for Hollywood movies than science journals

In the late 1980's, perfectly preserved 3000-year-old mummies began appearing in a remote Chinese desert. They had long reddish-blond hair, European features and didn't appear to be the ancestors of modern-day Chinese people.

Arkaim is an archaeological site situated in the Southern Urals steppe, 8.2 km north-to-northwest of Amurskiy, and 2.3 km south-to-southeast of Alexandronvskiy, two villages in the Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, just to the north from the Kazakhstani border.

The site is generally dated to the 17th century BC. Earlier dates, up to the 20th century BC, have been proposed. It was a settlement of the Sintashta-Petrovka culture, associated with ancient Bulgars according to Zdanovich.

The site was discovered in 1987 by a team of Chelyabinsk scientists who were preparing the area to be flooded in order to create a reservoir, and examined in rescue excavations led by Gennadii Zdanovich. At first their findings were ignored by Soviet authorities, who planned to flood the site as they had flooded Sarkel earlier, but the attention attracted by news of the discovery forced the Soviet government to revoke its plans for flooding the area. It was designated a cultural reservation in 1991, and in May 2005 the site was visited by President Putin.

A team of American and Chinese researchers working in a laboratory in Sweden used DNA samples to date and profile her mummy, confirming she and other mummies are of Indo-European descent.

Project leader Victor Mair told Aljazeera.net his work on helping to fill in the genetic jigsaw puzzle of human migration is "extremely important because they link up eastern and western Eurasia at a formative stage of civilisation (Bronze Age and Early Iron Age) in a much closer way than has ever been done before".

Central Asian migrants
A professor of Chinese language and literature at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, Mair and his researchers now believe that the mummies' ancestors migrated from Central Asia into the Tarim Basin approximately 5000 years ago.

Crossing the forbidding Pamir Mountains, which border modern day Pakistan and China, they then settled on the edge of the basin before slowly fanning out across the Taklamankan desert.

In more recent times the location for China's nuclear weapons tests, Mair wrote, "the fact people can subsist in the Tarim Basin at all is due to their intrepidity and adaptability".

Though inhospitable, the dry atmosphere and alkaline soils are a key factor in the preservation of hundreds of mummies discovered there since the 1970s, including the extremely well-preserved 3000-year-old Cherchen Man.

Nationalist mummies?
First investigating the mummies in the late 1980s when he came across them in a museum in Xinjiang, it was only recently that Mair was allowed to remove bone samples for testing overseas.

Earlier tests on the clothing of the mummies had already linked the particular twill weave of their garments to similar textile designs found in ancient tombs in central Europe.

But what was still needed was a DNA test to confirm everyone's suspicions.

Often hesitant to let foreign researchers take archaeological remnants out of the country after witnessing the pillaging of national monuments by foreign troops and archaeologists in the nineteenth century, the Chinese government has also been reluctant to release the samples for fears they would bolster the claims of Uighur groups seeking independence from China.


Though unlikely candidates for nationalistic ping-pong balls, the almost 4000-year-old corpses have become a symbol for activists hoping to discredit China's claim to the region.

In 2004, Chinese scientists at Jilin University in eastern China also concluded that the mummies' DNA came from Indo-Europeans, and not East Asians.

Dru Gladney, a Xinjiang specialist at the University of Hawaii, told Aljazeera.net that when the mummies were first found, "Uighur nationalists hoped this would irrefutably document that they were the indigenous peoples of Xinjiang rather than the Chinese".

"In terms of contemporary nationalism it really is irrelevant. Chinese claims are from the Han dynasty while Uighurs want to claim direct descent from the Uighur kingdom. It is always fallacious to use these kinds of materials to substantiate contemporary claims," he adds.
Politics.

Campaigning for an independent East Turkestan - a reference to a short period in modern history when the region declared independence from China - Uighur websites have claimed the mummies as the forefathers to a Uighur kingdom founded in the seventh century BC in an area now straddling modern day Mongolia and Xinjiang.

Uighur activists believe the mummies undermine China's ties to the region, which Beijing says were cemented as far back as the Han Dynasty, (206BC-AD220).

Comparing the mummies' DNA with that of present day inhabitants of the Tarim Basin, Mair found the modern day Uighur, Kazakh and Kirghiz ethnic groups did carry some genetic similarities with the mummies, but "no direct links".

"Central Asia is a zone of admixture, not a heartland or reservoir for genetic diversity," wrote Mair.

Science beats politics
An apparent victory for science over politics, in recent years a cooling of rhetoric over the nationalistic relevance of 4000-year-old human remains has meant that scientists have been able to carry out further tests.

Writing how "any attempt at a serious and impartial inquiry into the origins and identity of the mummies must simply remain oblivious to such tendentiousness and calumniation", Mair told Aljazeera.net that earlier attempts to take samples had met with resistance.

On one trip collecting 52 samples from the mummies, officials suddenly changed their minds and would only permit him to take five out of the country.

Mair says much still remains unknown about the mummies' backgrounds and is hoping with the lifting of political red tape, he may finally unlock mysteries buried for thousands of years.
