Why did Henry VIII dissolve the monasteries? The official answer is that he needed their wealth to pay for his debts and continuing extravagant lifestyle. However, if you just consider my county of Dorset as an example, his henchmen started their pillaging at Forde Abbey on the Dorset/Devon border and moved gradually eastwards, site by site. Shaftesbury Abbey was not wealthy, but was fabulously wealthy with enough money to purchase half of southern England, for instance. By the time Henrys henchmen had reached Shaftesbury all the valuables had been spirited away to a hidden location and have never been found to this day. Surely if his motivation was financial he would have started with the richest site, then the second richest, then the third richest, etc. After about 10 sites he probably would have had over 80% of the total wealth of all the abbeys and monasteries combined. The sites were not just looted, all the books were destroyed, the official reason being, that they were bound in gold and precious stones and the books were destroyed by removing the bindings. So why burn the pages afterwards? These books were actually hand-copied bibles not just any old books. Also destroyed were parchments, scrolls and holy relics which were of no financial value to Henry whatsoever. For all that effort the money produced only kept Henry going for a few years because of his life of excess. The main change to society that Henry made was to break with the Church of Rome and create the Church of England (Protestant) version of Christianity.
After Henry VIII and Edward VI, Henrys daughter became Queen Mary I and returned England to Catholicism. However, when her sister Elizabeth I ascended to the throne there was another spree of bible burning. The next monarch James I commissioned the official version of the bible that is used today, but how close is it to the original if most of the early copies were destroyed? The laws and moral framework of our country are based on a book that may have been heavily edited to justify the authority of the ruling elite. Any early examples are now under lock and key in strongrooms or private collections. Don’t forget the next period of spiritual cleansing by Oliver Cromwell and his Puritans.
