The fool is the wisest of them all, and I am pride to be god's fool.

I think this ironic mindset was very much at work in the design of the tarot Fool, especially when one considers not just the image on the card, but its role in the game. Of the trumps, only three are worth points in the game: The Fool, the Magician, and the World. And these are the most valuable cards in the game, equal to the kings in point value. But whereas the World beats every other card in the deck, the Fool beats none! It is a very strange thing, really, a card that brings the holder a great reward, but does so by losing! A card exempt from the usual rules, and a card you can never lose to another player.
The Fool makes a profound statement, it seems to me, dropped in amongst the kings, queens, and powers of the cosmos. All the other cards are in competition with each other in the game; each player hopes their card will "triumph" over those of others, and much distress results if a valuable card is beaten and taken. But the Fool alone is not in competition; he's outside the game. In every hand he appears once, somewhere, unpredictably, never taking anything and never being taken. He just is. Total humility bestows invulnerability.

Bloody hell last time I had my cards done the fool came up. I was miffed lol this was many many moons ago. And yes I've played the fool and been taken for a fool many times too.
I even got the bloody dog like the fool in the pic. Heard the saying black dog??
Aha! But there is also good news in being the fool. The dog maybe represents society and the normal matrix level trying to bring the fool back down to earth and to go back in with all the other sheeple I mean people who live back to where he came from. The fool is a traveller in the tarot card, he has little earthly possesions just what he carries with him.
Maybe the fool is more free than the fools who call him the fool.

the fool is the fool of truth, for he may utter things that make him sound foolish, but are in fact true.
the dog biting at his heels is the world trying to bring him back, the bag over his shoulder is his earthly baggage, still with him, but seperated, he is stepping off a cliff, head held high, not in foolishness, but because he knows that falling off that cliff is the best thing he can do.

the vedics called it prapatti, falling forward into life. i have found my greatest experiences came when i took a leap of faith. and i have certainly been called a fool for most of my life, even as we speak. :)

The effect of Sirian energy and influences generated approximately 12 years ago the last cycle when Sirius A and B were closest, in 1993 / 1994, have created renewed interest in this most influential heavenly body. The history books and religions of the world have had much to say about the God / Dog star. This article reflects on our ancestor’s beliefs and inspired insights into a great mystery — the mystery of the Dog Star and its influences on our little corner of the universe
Sirius was an object of wonder and veneration to all ancient peoples throughout human history. In the ancient Vedas this star was known as the Chieftain's star; in other Hindu writings, it is referred to as Sukra, the Rain God, or Rain Star. The Dog is also described as "he who awakens the gods of the air, and summons them to their office of bringing the rain."

The fool thinks he's a wise man and the wiseman knows he is the fool.
The fool card, the first card in the major arcana, is depicted as the (re)new(ed), raw energy of consciousness, which is likened to the child-like trust in the world.
He is taking the first steps of his new journey and conciousness (hence the cliff edge) and the wee dog ( his loyal familar and also animalistic self) is warning him of the perils of jumping off the cliff, but the fool jumps anyway, trusting that the world will support and guide him during his descent into experience.
The card usually appears in a reading when one is about to embark on a new 'journey', inner or outer, the decision of which path, (emotional/cups, inspiration/wands, material/pentacles or mental/swords) takes place through the next card the magician, the master of elements and experience.
I do like the fool alot, he is fresh consciousness and usually appears when one has already attained a level of mastery within oneself, the fool reappears when we are ready to embark on another path, project, idea....whatever newness comes with him, you can bet it'll be done with joy, simplicity and trust in life.

The fool is an interesting card, it is a key of 0 and yet a key of 22 as well. There are 22 cards to the Major Arcana, starting with number 1-21..the number 22 would seem to be missing if we just called it 0. The 0 key, represents the god force, the force before entering into manifestation, but in the same right, this card completes the cycle as number 22. Life continues on and on in a cycle and the number 22 is an ancient symbol for a circle representing god and infinity, because a circle has no starting point or end.
The Fool represents the Super conscious in which he has yet one more step ahead of him, symbolic of the fact that we never come to our limit in potential.
The bright sun over head represents the life energy that is forever rising. The mountains in the distance, even though bleak and cold rising high in the sky bring forth water when the sun melts the peaks, bringing life and nourishment to the ones below. His bag represents the memories of the past, with the eagle on it representing an awaked view towards aspirations. The white rose in his hand represents the pure desire and untainted goals, while the dog at his feet is symbolic of the lower incarnations that are elevated by evolution.

We have the elphias levi tarot deck and the fool card is very different to the one above, i haven't been able to find it online:(...in it it shows the fool with the dog pulling down his pants as he wanders straight ahead with a crocodile visible lurking its head peering over a log in the distance...the fool does not know what he is doing; he is unprepared for what life has in store for him, he blindly atempts to follow the path not fully seeing the dangers which lie just ahead...an indeed behind him in his wake.
There seems to be two very different aspects of interpration here with this card, as with all of them, the good side and the bad.
The fool is perhaps better off, in his innocence not knowing what is ahead of him. He is truly free. Or is it better to know of the dangers, no matter how distressing they are or how big a burden to be lumbered with, in order to have some warning and be prepared for what may come? They're more of a hinderance, to evolve we must let go of all fear.
He has no fear of the dangers as he ventures...no preparation he is just himself, with the few things he has in his bag over his shoulder...yep the fool looks pretty wise to me from here. :)

When playing with the tarot, the fool card can trump any card, thus ending the game, but you also lose when you do that.:D

Hello fools.
An interpretation I read was something like " a well intentioned fool carrying his sack of errors, blind to the danger which surrounds him, protected by his own innocence".
Sounds like me - a fool I am - but a well intentioned one. Born on the 22nd too.

A hindrance of knowing the worst and having it in your psyche, ruining all confidence rather than just going for it... To take that less traveled trail, no matter how shattered your reputation will be.. Because they will all be behind, speaking of it, not experiencing, while the fool will be ahead... Too curious to stay back and play in their game! ;)
Foolishness and a child-like mind definitely aren't a thing to be ashamed of. A world with less assumption and more "finding out." Great thread, this really made some ideals 'click' for me since I've been learning more about the tarot lately!

I am the Queen, said the Queen,
I've been here before said the Change,
This is your life said the Dream.
And the wind goes wheee...
And the Queen goes "O dear",
And the man says "I'm all alone".
I am the boy, said the girl,
I am the girl, said the boy,
I am the pill, said the Church
And I am all there is, says the God.
And the Saint goes, "Stick 'em up",
And the Devil goes, "Ha,Ha,Ha",
And the man says "I'm all alone".
"I'm your lover, dear, says Lady Porno,
"I am the Law", says Desperado.
"I am the truth", says Mr. Politic,
"And I'm all this and more", says the music.
And the Police go, ra, ra, ra,
And the Ambulance goes...Whooo,
And the man says "I'm all alone". :D

Fruit of Dharma Practice by the Tibetan yogi Milarepa
"The fear of death and infernal rebirths
due to my evil actions has led me to practice
in solitude in the snowcapped mountains.
On the uncertainty of life's duration
and the moment of death I have deeply meditated
Thus have I reached the deathless, unshakable citadel
of realization of the absolute essence.
My fear and doubts have vanished like mist
into the distance, never to disturb me again.
I will die content and free from regrets.
This is the fruit of Dharma practice."
