Is anyone familiar with this book? It describes an ancient land called Atland (a very similar name to Atlantis) that existed in the North Sea and was sunk in 2194 BC. The descendants of the people who lived on Atland are the Frisians. There are many, many other fascinating items of information in it. For those interested, there's a link from our website below.

I read somewhere that they explored the north sea with sonar and found that it's basicall a valley between the UK and mainland Europe, that it is not all that deep, and that there were structures found.
So it's either:
1. the standard geographic model with it's plate tectonics causing the *valley* to sink by the UK moving away from europe or
2. a lot of water came from somewhere, fast.

The current scientific consensus is that the area was flooded simply as a result of the melting of icecaps after the last Ice Age. Some of the area is very shallow indeed, and fisherman have been known to play games of football on it when it's exposed at low tide. There's a map on our website below of the area that was above water during the time in question.

The daughters o Freya
1. Abstain from meat, intoxicants, sexual activity and orgasm
2. At all times wear only the tohnekka, the short white tunic
3. Perform 1,200 deep knee-bends every day in devotion
Are they/you for real?
Knee-bends and no sex/orgasms?

i don't mean to offend you swethirte, but what sets you apart from other 'cults'? what with all the strict knee bends and penance to that one higher god.. not to mention abstinence from orgasms.. is it looked down upon?
i respect people's choices as far as asexuality is concerned, but i came across this from your site:
The Daughters of Frya are part of the Frisian Alliance (Fryske Alliansje), which campaigns to establish a sovereign Frisian state in those territories of what are now the Netherlands and Germany that are home to the Frisian people.
so there's a kind of nationalist agenda too? i've never heard about this group before you started this thread, so i'm just curious.

We don't regard ourselves as a cult, but others' opinions may differ I suppose. The Frisian Alliance is a cultural organisation more than a political one, and has many different groups affiliated to it.

well, the fact that frisians are looking for territory on what is now german, french and dutch soil is a political issue isn't it?
who do you perform these knee bends for? i mean is there a deity or something you'll worship, or is it just femininity you'll focus on?

Not really, this is all but religious!
Even though I live in the north, I've heard of that book, but never of such a group!
It would be interesting to check out the viking legends, and Norse mythology, I'm sure there would be striking similarities.

Wr-alda, the Spirit that pervades the universe, and his divine daughter in human form, Frya.

apparently not:
daughters of freya: A neo-pagan hoax? (http://www.religioustolerance.org/neopaga1.htm)
however, there is a widespread belief that the daughters of freya do not exist. The one item that we found convincing was their list of requirements for each daughter: They must perform 1,200 deep knee-bends daily. One of he religioustolerance.org staff members who is a nurse and a fitness buff believes that this many repeats would wreck their knees rather quickly.
A posting on wikipedia stated that "no reliable source has been offered for the existence..." of the group. 4 this has since disappeared. A posting at the cauldron, a pagan forum, suggests that the image on the daughter's web site is a cropped version of the green hope women's tennis team.

Sigh. Why do we keep having to defend ourselves against calumnies like this? Please come along to any of our public events and see us for yourself.

Friya = Friday.
And does it really matter whether that group is 'real'..? They don't have to be officially signed in somewhere, let them do whatever they please aslong as they don't harm others, imo.
A bit strange though, what's the point of 1200 deep knee-bands and wearing tennis and soccer clothes? Why not robes? The website states the daughters have to wear it all times. How about the winter (like now), special meetings or when you fall in some dirt on the street?

"In 2004 the Daughters of Frya were featured in an unfavourable light on Dutch TV, and attracted the attentions of anti-cult groups in Australia and elsewhere. The following year (2005) witnessed a number of fake websites purporting to be officially sanctioned by the organisation, but which were later revealed to be hoaxes perpetrated by former members. Since then, the Daughters of Frya have refused all contact with representatives of the media."

Nazi mystics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_mysticism) believed in a historical Thule/Hyperborea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperborea) as the ancient origin of the Aryan race (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aryan_race). Much of this fascination was due to rumous surrounding the Oera Linda Book "found" by Cornelis Over de Linden during the 19th Century. The Oera Linda Book was translated into German in 1933 and was favored by Heinrich Himmler. The Oera Linda Book is certainly a hoax, both from a linguistic and a cultural anthropological perspective.

I've read about Heligoland, that there were sea structures found, with the same colours as described by Plato in his work on Atlantis. However, there's no evidence or picture of these sea structures. I've been once to that island. Plato also mentioned a more tropical place if I remember, with grain harvest twice a year? It doesn't seem like the right place then, though I don't dismiss the idea that there was once a civilisation where there is the North Sea now.
The North Sea is not really deep (a very young sea), -13 meter at best.
Crazy though, that Himmler guy is quickly inspired. :D

Bending our knees symbolises respect for the Goddess, and is also a very powerful way of raising and channelling energy. The clothing symbolises our purity and devotion to the Goddess. It is also very practical, long robes would be impossible to do our exercises in.

The name Atland, for the land beneath the North Sea, is certainly similar to Atlantis, but there is no definite connection. I think it's quite likely though.

Got things to back that up?
It's not a tropical place (2 times a year harvest?), neither was it few milennia back. Actually, it was packed with snow and there was tundra.
Plato mentioned elephants, here it is possible since mammoth have been found in the North Sea.
Like I said, it's not really deep, surely they should have found many treasure, material and more proof of a civilisation, especially if it would be the glorious Atlantis of Plato. And where's the big mountain..?
Do you have any evidence?

Might there be any connection between these practices and the so-called "Saxon Greeting"?

Much of Plato's description can be made to fit the location of the sunken land in the North Sea. Even the location, beyond the Pillars of Hercules, because that's how anyone travelling from the Mediterranean would get there, by ship. It's also well known that during the period before 2194 BC, the climate in north-western Europe was much warmer. The inhabitants of Atland had colonised much of Europe in the form of the Megalithic culture, Plato says something very similar about the Atlanteans.
