Are there any yet?
To be honest I really wouldnt mind that. Get a decent tent do a bit of work for cash or sign up for jobseekers for money and thats it.
Currently house prices havent dropped one bit regardless of all the news saying house prices are tanking... really? 1 bed flats are still 200,000 in london + council tax and bills and thats you reason for working a shitty job round the clock.
So where are the tent citys because quite frankly I am up for that. Even to do the work in this society only contributes towards the whole mess I dont want to contribute towards sustaining high prices by digging holes and filling them up again.
If everyone just left their rent got in a tent within 6 months house prices would fall to near zero. :) but we all know its impossible to galvanize like that.

I have experimented with the idea of finding somewhere remote, maybe a cave and pitching a tent within, camouflaging the entrance and living there. As tents are they tend to leak, if they don't leak condensation builds up so care must be taken where to pitch the tent.

Tent city's... its the UK we tend to treat our most vulnerable a tad better than the other side of the pond.
Looks like you have fallen for the glorious media.
Houses prices have fallen but nowhere near what they will. We are a good year, year and half behind the US in the down turn.
Just because the media paints a picture of doom it doesn't mean it is, be patent it coming.;)

Everywhere!
In Leeds near the Dales I think, and just about anywhere on the coast.
Some places sell land very cheap....10k (or even less) which you can put a tent, or even better, a motor home (cheap fifteenth hand one) on and you have your own house. You could even charge others to stay on your land which will give you a bit of cash.

I can't offer proof of this, but I have been told there is one outside of Peterborough.

just outside edinburgh city protesters live in the trees/tents and shacks made from recycled metal, its quite beautiful to see. theyve been there since 1996.
i know quite a few of the people living there as im a frequent goer to the raves and parties.
it is quite a sight to see :) - they have made paths, stages for entertaining each other, bathing areas (there is a river 5 ses from the communial area) many of the houses are up in trees also. next time i go ill take a few photos.
the protesters etc stay as its an old forest/nature reserve inwhich the council wish to cut down/destroy inorder to have a highway going through.
all the protesters are lovely people who have given up their material lives for this a noble cause. Many there have told me they love it so much they choose to remain. theyre all normal good hearted folk though a little on the muddy side .
i cant remember the exact name of the area however its out towards Dalkieth just out edinburgh.
although that newspage states (the date 17 January 2006 ) they have been evicted and plans will begin to bring the forest down i can assure you these protesters/people (and more) are still there today and there has been no highway contruction and attempt to remove them, that forest is now (and has been for a while) their home. :)
ill ask my friends who have or still live there if there is any news, although i doubt anything negative ill likely just get dates for the next party or rave :D

i was there 2 weeks ago, they still live there. Ive realised now that the news article i provided was for a similar case yet altogether different area thats near by so was not what i was looking for. Ill find out the name of the place i am refering to and let you know.
I visit there at least once a month, its definatly outside edinburgh heading towards Dalkieth possibly penicuik way (I always get those directions confused). Theres a few buses that head out that way.

Out of necessity people will make shelter with whatever they can, the authorities are there to hound them either until they disappear or they can be suitably punished. The excuse being that the travellers make messes and commit crimes so anyone who doesn't live in a house is automatically a criminal, a criminal for not having a home, job or being repossessed. Anyone who is repossessed needs to have a place, say a place fairly central to be organised where they can go where there is safety in numbers or the police are able to successfully pick off individuals and small groups.

I think it's the Bilston woods that you're thinking of, out towards Penicuik just past ikea.

I wouldn't fancy being in a tent in this weather, my sympathy to anyone who is having to live like that.

18 years ago I spent two weeks camping in the tent and bash city in Lincolns Inns Fields in the heart of London just off Holborn. The whole of the little park was taken over by down and outs and others living in tents and bashs made out of cardboard boxes. Quite a community, mostly alcoholics unfortunately. Ten to fifteen times a day do gooders would come by with free food and clothing and sleeping bags. It was actually an easy life!
Breakfast was provided every day at seven am down by the Temple tube station. Fresh croissants, coffee and sandwiches. We were well looked after. The homeless are not to be pitied. Many do it by choice and there are so many handouts in the centre of London that is has become a farce!
Many of them are now East European alkies, particularly Polish.
There was also a huge community living under the South Bank Arts complex.
They have all been moved on now.
A few years ago the London council used to provide a camping ground for young tourists up near Wormwood Scrubs. It was open to anyone and had showers etc.
Hmm, that reminds me...the Hari Krishnas give out free food every day in Kentish Town at 1pm. I fancy some veggie nosh. I might pop along there today.
If you are hungry and stuck in central London on a Sunday, go down to the Embankment under Waterloo Bridge on the north side at 2pm there is soup and sandwiches and sweets and chocolate bars and clothing for free.
It's a wonderful life!
Be sure we will be seeing a proliferation of tent cities soon. Of course the police won't allow them to stay for long.
Who is old enough to remember underneath the Arches in Charing Cross? For generations that used to be the place where all the down and outs could sleep without being hassled by the police. There used to be lines of them along the pavement by the station under the arches. They have all gone now as the area smartened up.

Yummy , Krishana veggie nosh,
Do we go as we are , or would my Cashmere Crombie give me away?
Seriously , could you camp out in this weather we're currently experiencing?
Most of these poor sods aren't under arches, they are probably out in a field somewhere.

Yes, you can camp out in any weather as long as the tent doesn't leak. All you need is a good warm sleeping bag and something thick and waterproof under you. I've done it. Snug as a bug in a rug! Hot coffee waiting for you when you wake up. Cocoa before bedtime supplied by the Salvation Army and various Christian do gooders.
Christmas is the best time. You have to beat them off you as they ply you with soup, stew, cakes,Christmas pudding, trifles and even money.
They used to tap one's tent pole well after midnight with more stuff.
"Go away, I'm stuffed and I'm trying to get some sleep" we would shout!
" I have a pair of boots for you and chocolate profiteroles"
"Oh, alright then, hang on I'll be out in a minute" :D
