My guess is this will be used as a P-R-S to usher in more controls and/or
surveillance of email/internet for all of us.

June 22, 1941 - Germany Attacks Soviet Union
whoever they are, well done.
May 17, 2007
Estonia's defense minister said Thursday there was a possibility that the Russian government was involved in massive cyber attacks that have crippled the Baltic nation's Web sites this month.

The cyber raiders hitting Estonia
As Estonia appeals to its Nato and EU partners for help against cyber-attacks it links to Russia, the BBC News website's Patrick Jackson investigates who may be responsible.
One Estonian website was defaced to show a Soviet soldier
Estonia, one of the most internet-savvy states in the European Union, has been under sustained attack from hackers since the ethnic Russian riots sparked in late April by its removal of a Soviet war memorial from Tallinn city centre.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6665195.stm
Operation Barbarossa (German: ''Unternehmen Barbarossa'') was the codename for Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II that commenced on June 22, 1941.[3]The operation was named after the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa of the Holy Roman Empire, a leader of the Crusades in the 12th century. It is not to be confused with the war on the Eastern Front in its entirety.

Yeah ashyr, I'm ALWAYS suspicious when they claim that someone hacked into an important system. I think these things are done deliberately in this case by the pentagon.

I wonder who?
It was the office of the Secretary of Defense.
Maybe,
- someone from a middle eastern army intelligence?
- a bitter and twisted ex computer programmer who doesn't want to pay his tax and wants information to blackmail his way out of paying?
- an unemployed computer freak that has nothing better to do, and hasn't collected any information at all, gaining not a damn thing, but had a few laughs along the way?
- the good aliens who are sick of the Illuminati shit and want to speed up the process for the human/earth defense dept?
and last but by no means least cause this is probably who it is,
- a teenage computer nerd who wants to know how he can get hold of a nuc' bomb so he can blow his parents and all their capitalistic friends into the water, cause he's been grounded and wants to blow this popsicle stand anyway, cause his girlfriend ended up with the head boy of the school and rugby team. He will get his revenge............
Seriously, and damn it, I hope whoever it was they got what they needed, and they're gonna use it, no matter how long or how much it takes. yee ha
one up for us.....oh yeah....

Yeah, probably a propaganda stunt. There are different levels of security. No way in hell are the more secure Pentagon networks connected directly to the Internet. More secure areas are physically separated from other networks, in electromagnetically shielded rooms.
And if some hacker did manage to break in to the part of the Pentagon network connected to the Internet, such as mail servers, then why would Pentagon want to tell BBC? :-)

Hey anders, good post, the electromagnetically shielded rooms, are quite interesting aint they, do you know why ? I do but I would like to hear from you friend

I listened to a lecture once given by a security expert and he talked about different security levels and such.
Another suspicious thing is that it's always Pentagon that hackers attack. We never hear about attacks on the NSA. Or have I missed that?

cool, can you remember the name of the security expert? is the lecture available online at all ?
I like you dunno if any of the others got hacked, a bit busy and all that.

I don't remember his name, but it's a common approach:
"First, the network can be physically isolated by ensuring that the network cables are not connected to a hostile network. This basic approach prevents online hacking attempts from the hostile network; however, it also severely restricts the users’ capabilities. Nonetheless, there are undoubtedly environments where this level of protection is advisable, such as networks carrying top secret military information."

I sometimes wonder why all the money is spent on weapons, when the real power is in information and storage.
The most effective weapon against a developed country is simply an EMP and far more effective then hacking.

yep you got it.
there will be some solution shortly after they make it widely known as to need to fix this PROBLEM.
the solution might be another security improvement. maybe allowing them to impliment some new technology.
baby steps.

Is this the solution Attack on Estonia puts cyber security on EU agenda
10:04AM Monday July 02, 2007
HELSINKI - The European Union will address cyber security issues after attacks on the Internet sites of Estonia, says EU Information Society commissioner Viviane Reding.
Estonia suffered cyber attacks on private and government Internet sites, peaking in May after a decision to move a Soviet-era statue from a square in Tallinn prompted outrage from some Russian nationals in Estonia and triggered a diplomatic row with Moscow.
"Estonia was a wakeup call," Reding told a European Business Leaders Convention.
"We have to wake up our governments ... If people do not understand the urgency now, they never will."
The Commission has said it will launch a public consultation this year on having an EU-wide law on identity theft over the Internet.
Estonia said thousands of sites were affected and the attacks were aimed at crippling key infrastructure in a country heavily dependent on the Internet.
The attacks appeared to have stemmed initially from Russia although the Kremlin denied it was behind the action.
