As friday 6th February marks the birthday of Bob Marley, I thought I'd share with you some interesting paragraphs from the biography Catch A Fire by Timothy White:
On the cover of his final album Confrontation, Bob was depicted as an Ethiopian horseman transformed into St. George slaying the dragon. The legend of St George had its roots in Christian Ethiopia, where the walls of a church in ancient Lalabella, Axum (now Tigre), built circa 600 C.E, were adorned with images of the saint slaying the fire breathing dragon.
Neville Garrick had once considered putting an illustration of St George on the back of the Kaya sleeve, and in the full colour draft of Confrontation cover the dragon had a mitre, a liturgical headdress worn by the Pope, on its head. Chris Blackwell vetoed the idea, fearing it might alienate Catholic supporters amongst Bob's ranks
Had the image of the papacy as slain satan been allowed to prevail as album art, it would have struck a dread chord in devout Rasta precincts, since settlements throughout Jamaica had been abuzz since 1981 with the sinister Vatican related events making global headlines.
I.e., 953 members of the Italian establishment-including several members of the then prime minister Forlani's cabinet- were members of the ultrasecret masonic lodge known as 'P2'...many P2 figures were linked to evil doings in the Vatican bank that included alleged diversion of the Church's funds to the CIA and Mafia by Michele Sindona (P2 financier/Vatican investment counselor)

Dear Mods (not 'Rockers', if you know what I mean...)
As this is an 'entertainment industry' topic, I'd be very grateful if you moved this thread into the forum where people are saying that Paul Macartney is dead and MJ is alive.
Thank you in advance. :)

Where/when was that?
My Mum tried to get a ticket to see him in 1976, playing at Leeds University. Sold out within 2 hours.
Bloody students! :D

I remember that tour, it was a long way to travel and I was too young to go. Could You Be Loved had just become a hit and Uprising was constantly played at home.

Bob Marley is a God!
He knew what was going on way before most of us did. I think Redemption Song is about as close as it gets to being able to articulate what is going on in this world in one song:-
Old pirates, yes, they rob I;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the 'and of the Almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfil de book.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.
RIP Bob

I saw him twice! At Glasgow Apollo and Crystal Palace.

It was probably ten years later that the penny dropped with me and Marley's songs. I was listening to night time radio, Richard Skinner, when it was announced that he'd died. I knew at the age of 14 that he was an important musical artist but I only really 'got' him politically years later.
When Lennon died, it was wall to wall, station to station tributes. Relatively little in comparison when Bob passed. Hate to bring that up, but it's true.

bob marley was one of the greatest. as a kid, my uncle used to play marley all the time. i got into marley at age 15/16, songs like soul rebel, small axe, exodus, one love, rainbow country etc
if music is a religion, then bob marley is its prophet !
bob marley and 2pac are my two faves.
i love marley for his calmness, inspiration, wisdom, his message of unity, equality and liberty for all mankind. he uplifts, soothes, re-invigorates, our tired minds and souls, he is truly a genius, truly a legend.
i like pac because i grew up with 2pac, he was the greatest artist of my lifetime. people only see 2pac's commercial stuff, but if you dig into the crates, you see 2pac was over 10 years ahead, even now hip hop still can't get anywhere near his level. i loved pac for his courage, strength, insight. he came out straight against the nwo/elite/illuminati, he did this knowing full well that he was going to get killed/assassinated. his last album spelt it all out, makavelli: the don killuminati (kill the illuminati). he is on video saying that after the makavelli album, he was giving up hip hop and going to get into politics, to fight against the illuminati, then he got murdered.
2pac captures the anger, the hope, the zeitgeist of my youth/awakening.
not many people would be that brave, only a few are that brave.
-----------------
i do like ziggy marley, and damien marley, damien is outstanding too. he has tracks like the book of life with capelton, and the road to zion with nas, these highlight serious issues.
i also have burning spear albums, yabby you/jesus dread, also peter tosh and lee scratch perry.
can you imagine if bob marley and 2pac where alive today, the collaborations they would do, would beat anything.

Nicely put, Synergy. :)
I love my old school reggae and a bit of modern stuff. Not much comes close to Marley though, for me.
2pac, I still need to listen to more...though I've seen talks he gave as a 21 year old. He knew the score.
