Any Aleister Crowley experts here? First of all let me be very clear that I am in no way criticising Crowley, I am just a little cautious of his work as I am very aware of the power of the darker side. But I do want to learn more about his work and am looking for guidance on which book to start with. But in fairness I should make the following clear:
1. When I skimmed the Crowley shelf in a bookshop the books did seem full of dark energy to me, so I am likely to read with great caution.
2. I am more a Hogwarths School philosphy of defence against the dark arts being better than actually learning the dark arts. Though I do recognise the vital importance of balance.
3. When I last ran/walked the Loch Ness Marathon something made me pause for though at one specific point, which turned out to be essentially outside his house when he lived there.
I have watched Chemical Wedding, and I have a cautious interest in picking up one of his books. But all of them scream caution to me. So if any Crowley expert is here I really would value your advice on which one to make the effort to pick up and get into.
I just want to gain a better understanding of his work.

He is not that bad, he is a good read; not as stodgy and dogmatic as most occult writers.
Very much tongue in cheek.
"Magick in theory and practice" is a very popular book among followers of the occult.

Thank you, I did smile when I read the amazon review. It is funny we do seem to share some life experiences.
1. Crowley, from the amazon review, contacted his guardian angel, as I to have been fortunate to do. Though I just stumbled into this connection being brought up prodestant guardian angels are not something to quote a vicar that I know "The Church of England is comfortable with."
2. Also like Crowley, I had a bit of an initiation inside the Great Pyramid of Giza. Though nothing like the accounts I have read of his. I just visited it as a tourist at the time of the first gulf war. I wont bore you all with the account but I just felt "at home/satisfied" a hardly noticeable feeling really at the time. But from that moment on my mind opened and I found myself on a voyage of discovery. It took me several years to fully comprehend the significance of that routine, normal, repeated by millions, visit to the Kings chamber. I guess that I must have been there in a previous life and that it acted like a key for me.
Nothing like the initiation that life gave me when I was forty which lasted all year and which really did transform me from a gibbering bloke to feeling much more comfortable with his knowledge.
Mike you have been in the Great Pyramid havent you, what did you think of it? Anyone else?

I think his work is OK but you have to not fall into traps with it. I thought he was bad when I first got into the occult but with time I realised he was quite different to the popular image.
A lot of his work is written to deliberaltey piss the establishment off, some of it was a reaction to his upbringing in a very repressive christian sect family, and some of it is just a wicked sense of humour.
The man is by no means perfect, which people realise when they read his diaries but one rare quality that sets him from other spiritual teachers is that he does not try to portary himself as somebody who is pure as snow.

Also, look through that library and you will find a full ecopy of The Equinox, which would cost a lot to buy.

really, got any proof?
We debated this very topic in the past. Was it Alex Sanders that made such a claim? the fact that Sanders was obviously a sexual deviant and pervert really makes credible reading, not. Such accusations were never reported by the MSM who hated him adn used any excuse they could to attack him.
Why would any witch make a claim like that unless it was to try and enhance his own magical image? unless you can offer some real proof of things I think it best to leave the speculative crap at the door.
I have a book that is supposed to show he worked for intelligence but the book is a load of crap. I am gutted that I wasted money on it. There is no proof in it but only speculations.

I think he liked to revel in an evil reputation so he didn't deny rumours, however wild. He'd probably be laughing at all what is attributed to him.;)

But you didnt. And I think you are derailing the thread.
The truth is that you can call me a liar if you want but my employment is not a matter of what people believe. Makes no odds to me. I think there is a hint of jealousy really, you being a low grade soldier who is now without work and me having a lot of free time and get paid well. Its not always like that though, I am off abroad next year and have a lot of preparations this year, so for a while I wont be in the forum. You should appreciate my work, I pay tax so that people without jobs can get benefits.
Paid to disrupt the forum, thats funny. Always makes me chuckle when people say that.

So to get back to the topic. If people want to know more about crowley the best thing to do is look at his work with an open mind rather than trusting the opinions of a few mongs who have never read any of his works.
If you like his work then fair enough, if you hate it then discard it.
People should make up their own minds and not be pressed by those who are biased in their ignorance.

A lot of his work is written to deliberaltey piss the establishment off,I can only imagine what the establishement think of me given that I encourage them to close say do gaps in various parts of public and not so public life, lead by positive example, eradicate bullying, and raise standards. Sometimes I keep forgetting that I am sort of part of the English Establishement myself through only loosely. Mind you I think that I have earned the quiet respect of a few within over the last decade or so.
The man is by no means perfect, which people realise when they read his diaries but one rare quality that sets him from other spiritual teachers is that he does not try to portary himself as somebody who is pure as snow. The trouble with being as pure as snow is that if you have not experienced darkness how can you truly know what the light is? Also you could end up very airy fairy and not be able to relate solutions to real world problems.
I wil tell you a bit more about me. I had a very difficult childhood and pulled myself out of a very bad place and got myself into the professions. Then a recession came and I didnt cope with that to well. Anyhow I srtuggled my way in business for a few years but did ok, then I borrowed and expanded and failed. During this period my wife was becoming increasingly ill and my children were still young. I decided that my wife and children had to come first, and I found myself in a place where I had a simple choice leave my wife and children or stop working and become her full time carer/father. I chose the latter. Then a few years passed and I began to rebuild my self-confidence that had taken a battering, and I found myself being a bit of a fool but at least I was a fool trying to do the right thing, and life broke me. Then I decided that enough was enough I was going to make sense of life, work out where the meaning was to my life, why I had been born. I knew that something wasnt quite right but I did not know what that something was. So I climbed my way to where I am today. I am living breathing proof that doing Masonic work works, even though I only discovered that it was masonic work after I had done it - doh:rolleyes:
Everyone has skeletons, even me, but I have faced mine and dealt with them for I fully expect that they will become very public once I take formal positions of leadership (hehehe he says like a mad scientist hehehe). I would be very suspicious of anyone who said that they have no skeletons or who claimed never to have made mistakes in their lives.

I am not a fan of ebooks myself. They are useful if you are trying to save money though!!
I am sure that masonic stuff is perfectly valid in terms of developing awareness. I think there are a lot of us who get onto the path after a difficult life. It helps to give the tools to perfect the ashlar I guess.
As a member of the forces I am part of the establishment but I feel my loyalty is to my family rather than the service, me being a mind controlled robot and all that .
I think what Crowley used to attack was the very oppressive and controlling culture of his day where being a free thinking individual was not always acceptable, especially if what you claim is against the status quo.
There are elemens to Crowleys work that I would not follow, that is if he meant them with any seriousness or to test if people were fools. One of the good documents is Liber Oz, which I have posted in here many times for the benefit of those who think he is evil. They always refuse to comment on the text though which is too positive for them.

I feel my loyalty is to my familyGood.
I know a man who had (hopefully still has) a high powered job that I used to tell family first as it was clear he was on a severe time budget between the various aspects of his life. He told me something like "well in the top three anyway". We agreed to differ. Anyhow his son then tragically died when he was knocked down by a car. I would imagine that privately at least he wished that he had spent more time with him.
You never know when illness or tragedy will strike so you do need to value your family while you can. I realise it can be difficult for people forced to work long hours to either make ends meet or in fear of loosing their job, [something that I will be tackling in future years] or indeed those whith high career ambition, but it is important to try.
I realise that it is something that most fathers completely miss, but I have brought up my children from a young age and I can tell you that you may be financially poor, but you are so full of joy. Well when you are not pulling your hair out that is.
Hopefully it wont be that many years before these good sounding work life balance policies are actually fully implemented as opposed to being there but anyone who uses them being seen as a non promotion prospect. There was a great article of this in my professions journal some months back.
But it will take a sea change in attitudes, and people like you and me standing up and saying come on we want a better life. Just wait until I have the Annukani (?)crown me as King of this planet (he he he he he....must buy mad professor wig and evil genius labcoat), I will open the hearts of the old crusties.;)
(Mike doesnt know it yet but he is going to become one of my "no" men with full permission to annoy me with opposing views thoughts and considerations).

I have watched Chemical Wedding, and I have a cautious interest in picking up one of his books. But all of them scream caution to me. So if any Crowley expert is here I really would value your advice on which one to make the effort to pick up and get into.
First, I don't think Crowley is comprehensible to anyone not intimately familar with the history and teachings of the hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. If you're not familiar with it already, I highly recommend reading "The Golden Dawn" by Dr. F. Israel Regardie.
Crowley himself was a voluminous writer, and an interesting one. He attempted to blend the tradition Golden Dawn / Rosicrucian teachings and practices with the philosophy of Nietzsche and an odd type of postmodernism. Whether or not he was successful, you'll have to judge for yourself. Personally, I think there are better resources than Crowley, but he was so influential in the field of occultism that he cannot long be ignored by serious students.
