Morrisey is a prophet.

How can you stay with a fat girl, who says

Would you like to marry me,

if you like you can buy the ring.

The Smiths the best Irish band ever IMO; and yes they were from Manchester but all men had Irish parents which makes them 1st generation Irish men, look at the names

Morrissey
Maher (changed to Marr)
Joyce
Rourke.

Don't get any more Eireann than that.

Peace out!

If so

"I know its over"- Its so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate. It takes strength to be gentle and kind.
It's so easy to laugh it's so easy to hate it takes guts to be gentle and kind.

IMO the best Smiths song
"That joke isnt funny anymore"- But that joke isn't funny anymore its too close to home and its too near the bone. It's too close to home and it's too near the bone far more than you'll ever know.

Kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down

Simple but masterful and astonishing honesty.

The Smiths are amazing, one of the greatest groups ever. It's hard for me to decide what my favorite Smiths song would be, but I guess I'll go with "Still Ill"

I decree today that life
Is simply taking and not giving
England is mine - it owes me a living
But ask me why, and I'll spit in your eye
Oh, ask me why, and I'll spit in your eye
But we cannot cling to the old dreams anymore
No, we cannot cling to those dreams

Does the body rule the mind
Or does the mind rule the body ?
I donīt know....

Under the iron bridge we kissed
And although I ended up with sore lips
It just wasn't like the old days anymore
No, it wasn't like those days
Am I still ill ?
Oh ...
Am I still ill ?
Oh ...

Does the body rule the mind
Or does the mind rule the body ?
I donīt know...

Ask me why, and I'll die
Oh, ask me why, and I'll die
And if you must, go to work - tomorrow
Well, if I were you I really wouldn't bother
For there are brighter sides to life
And I should know, because I've seen them
But not very often ...
Under the iron bridge we kissed
And although I ended up with sore lips
It just wasn't like the old days anymore
No, it wasn't like those days
Am I still ill ?
Oh ...
Oh, am I still ill ?
Oh ...

Another great one is "Paint a Vulgar Picture"

At the record company meeting
On their hands - a dead star
And oh, the plans they weave
And oh, the sickening greed

At the record company party
On their hands - a dead star
The sycophantic slags all say :
"I knew him first, and I knew him well"

Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !
Re-evaluate the songs
Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

A-list, playlist
"Please them , please them !"
"Please them !"
(sadly, THIS was your life)

But you could have said no
If you'd wanted to
You could have said no
If you'd wanted to

BPI, MTV, BBC
"Please them ! Please them !"
(sadly this was your life)

But you could have said no
If you'd wanted to
You could have walked away
...Couldn't you ?

I touched you at the soundcheck
You had no real way of knowing
In my heart I begged "Take me with you ...
I don't care where you're going..."

But to you I was faceless
I was fawning, I was boring
Just a child from those ugly new houses
Who could never begin to know

Who could never really know
Oh ...

Best of ! Most of !
Satiate the need
Slip them into different sleeves !
Buy both, and feel deceived

Climber - new entry, re-entry
World tour ! ("media whore")
"Please the Press in Belgium !"
(THIS was your life...)

And when it fails to recoup ?
Well, maybe :
You just haven't earned it yet, baby

I walked a pace behind you at the soundcheck
You're just the same as I am
What makes most people feel happy
Leads us headlong into harm

So, in my bedroom in those 'ugly new houses'
I danced my legs down to the knees
But me and my 'true love'
Will never meet again ...

At the record company meeting
On their hands - at last ! - a dead star !
But they can never taint you in my eyes
No, they can never touch you now

No, they cannot hurt you, my darling
They cannot touch you now
But me and my 'true love'
Will never meet again

In the fabric of a tutu
Any man could get used to
And I am the living sign
And I'm a living sign
I am a living sign
I'm a living sign
I am a living sign
I'm a living sign

Best band ever.

The Smiths are one of my favorite bands; I'm seeing Morrissey when he comes to Buffalo in March! I can't pick my favorite Smiths song, maybe "I know it's Over", "There is a light that never goes out","Ask", or "Asleep". Or maybe "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" or "Boy with a Thorn in his Side". Pretty much all of The Queen is Dead is brilliant, and off course their other albums a great too. I also love Morrissey's solo work; to me it's noticeably different than his work with The Smiths.

I liked the Smiths when I was 15-16, but I can't listen to too much of their music, or I find myself greatly annoyed.

I prefer Morrissey solo, my favorite album being KILL UNCLE.

Sadly.. MORRISSEY seems to have let himself go over the years. I find it highly ironic and funny how all his songs about fat, ugly people have finally caught up with how he looks. You eventually become what you sing about...

Really? I guess we all find different things appealing.

"America your head's too big, Because America, Your belly is too big.
And I love you, I just wish you'd stay where you belong..

In America, The land of the free, they said, And of opportunity, In a just and a truthful way. But where the president, is never black, female or gay, and until that day, you've got nothing to say to me, to help me believe..

In America, it brought you the hamburger. Well America you know where, you can shove your hamburger. And don't you wonder, why in Estonia they say, Hey you, you big fat pig, you fat pig, you fat pig."

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?

and:
The Smiths - Big mouth strikes again

but they did so many classics it's hard to narrow down
