Which books about Ireland do you recommend?
To understand the place, I mean.
I just moved there, but can't say I understand the country or the people one bit.
It's supposed to have an ancient culture that's all mystic and wise but all I see (currently) is a consumer society in overdrive. Working and shopping seems all there is to do. Oh, and drinking of course.
I am suspending my judgement for now because I realise my experience might be tainted by culture shock and I haven't stayed here real long.
P.S. Btw I read Angela's Ashes.

Well you're in Dublin and unfortunately all capitals (especially Dublin these days) are very consumer/capitalist places. I know it seems like Irish culture is being pissed on but theres still a few people there to keep it going. I suggest books by Sean O Callaghan in the Sinn Fein store at Parnell Street (just before Chapters books on the right!), also if you really wanna see Irish culture get the fuck outta Dublin for a few days and go to Tipperary, Kilkenny, Cork, Kerry etc drink talk to locals and meet a Sinn Fein politician. welcome to Ireland too!

According to this Sean O'CAllaghan is a former IRA member turned informer.
He even wrote an autobiography called "the Informer".
Why are you recommending I'd go into the Sinn Fein store to ask about him?
To get me beaten up?
Irish fun I guess.

Theres more than one Sean O Callaghan!!. I'm refering to the Historian and writer. If you did go into that shop and ask for him they'd be delighted for the custom and not beat you up unlike cops!. Plus Wikipedia is more disinfo can't believe a word from them fuckers.
Peace my man.

Welcome to Ireland!
I recommend listening to The Revs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Revs). Especially their Album Suck.
