Over 100, 000 Tamil men, women and children have been killed.
• One million Tamils have fled the country.
• Over half a million Tamils have been displaced.
The Sri Lankan Government is currently engaged in the ethnic cleansing of the Tamil minority and the international community is just turning a blind eye.
A war that most people dont even know about a war not so different to Vietnam, the bombing of innocent civilians, schools, temples, orphanages, refugee camps and hospitals.
They are currently using food, water and medicine as a weapons of war against the Tamils.
The Government of Sri Lanka has removed all International Volunteer Organizations (INGOs) out of northern region where the conflict is taking place. And as the Government does not allow any International Media into the area there are NO WITNESSES of the ongoing Genocide and the unfolding Humanitarian crisis.
Due to the ongoing military offensive, a recent Cyclone and heavy monsoon rains which have caused widespread flooding, over 300 000 people have been left without shelter, food, clean water and inadequate medical supplies. And without proper sanitation this is a breeding ground for an epidemic of Cholera, Typhoid, Malaria and Dengue.
Recently the Sri Lankan Government has boasted that it has dropped so many bombs on its own civilians that it equals Hiroshima. It is the only country in the world to drop so many bombs on it own country to equate to a nuclear blast.
On Saturday 30th November 2008, just days before 120 countries signed up to a treaty banning the use of cluster bombs, the Sri Lankan Government dropped them onto a camp for Internally Displaced Persons.
Sri Lankan is one of the top eight 'red alert' countries where genocide is taking place. It is fourth in the world for using indiscriminate aerial bombardment on its own citizens, it comes after the Soviet Union, Iraq and Indonesia. Regardless of this Britain and many other countries still supplies them with arms.
Since 2005, the Sri Lankan Government has been responsible in Government controlled areas for 1500 extrajudicial killing of Tamil civilians, torture, scores of kidnappings and countless arbitrary detentions.
QUOTES:
*Every 5 hours someone in Sri Lanka is abducted-Asian Human rights commission.
*Sri Lanka has the world's highest number of abductions- Human Rights Watch
*Hon. Mr. Scott MP (Conservative – Ilford, North):* *"In the past few years, Iraq has put on trial its leader, Saddam Hussein, who bombed and killed his own people. Exactly the same thing is being done by the Sri Lankan Government now"*
*Hon. Ms. Susan Kramer MP (Lib Dem – Richmond Park):* *"I wonder whether the Minister understands how distressing it is for our Tamil constituents not to hear an outright condemnation of the Sinhalese Government's use of strategies such as cluster bombing towards their civilians. Such language would have been used in the context of Darfur and elsewhere, yet it seems, selectively, not to be being used in this context"**
*Bruce Fein (Former U.S.A. Associate Deputy Attorney General) (2008):
"The genocide of Sri Lanka’s Tamils has now become mainstream thinking in Tamil Nadu, Malaysia, South Africa, and elsewhere. It explains in part Sri Lanka’s eviction from the United Nations Human Rights Council. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have also been vocal detractors of Sri Lanka’s human rights atrocities. Further, this week New York-based Genocide Prevention Project has included Sri Lanka as one of the eight "red alert" countries where genocide and other mass atrocities are underway or risk breaking out. Also, the Obama administration was handed a policy report on genocide with specific recommendations from former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. This is likely to bring Sri Lanka’s genocide into U.S. focus."
