I don't think I would call it "beautiful" since he could have pardoned them at any time and they were put in prison to scare off any other border guards who got funny ideas about doing their jobs properly.

Perhaps you have not had the understandig of the issue
as I have as I followed it from its begining.
When the President was asked repeatedly to PARDON
them right after those ridiculous sentences he refused
saying they DID break the law seriously by CONCEALING
their shooting.

They did not set a good example for others.
Most of us felt he would eventually do one of two possibilities.
A pardon, which is same as exoneration , and he wasnt really
considering that as the crime was so serious.

So we did expect the COMUTING of the sentences.
By comuting he allows them to be released at end of
min senence. He removed the 16 year MAX and comuted
to less. That MINIMUM will be finished in March.

Its a very fair settlemet They stand convicted but
go free after SOME punishments.

Very fair and a beautiful decision. :)

President Bush commuted the prison sentences of former Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.

Fox News reports the announcement came today, the last full day of Bush's presidency.

The agents were convicted of shooting at a fleeing drug smuggler and under an enhanced sentence guideline were ordered to spend more than a decade in prison..

As WND reported last week, the Department of Justice's pardon attorney opened a file on the case and was considering recommending that the president commute the sentences.

Ramos and Compean remain in solitary confinement in federal prison serving 11- and 12- years respectively for a 2005 incident in which they fired on a drug smuggler as he fled back into Mexico after bringing 750 pounds of marijuana into the U.S. near Fabens, Texas.

The Justice Department's pardon attorney, Ronald Rogers, said at the time, the former agents apparently were not eligible for a pardon, which would nullify the punishment.
But they might be eligible for a commutation, he said, which would result in a reduction of their sentences.

As WND reported Ramos and Compean began serving their prison sentences two years ago, Jan. 17, 2007.
