i´m not in hardware and midi-stuff anymore. running a sequencer and vst-plugins is so much easier ;)

maybe this can help you http://www.arpegemusic.com/connecter.htm

Hi, ok i guess you have the drivers for the Midisport installed. The volume on the Microsoft MIDI interface turned up on the system volume control. On cubase the record button has to be on before it will come through. Each track can be routed to a certain output, so if the synth is triggering the soundcards MIDI sounds it should be routed to the right place.

Sorry about the ramble, if you be more specific ill try and help. I use Nuendo but is pretty much exactly the same as Cubase 3

1. Connect MIDISPORT to your computer using the provided USB cable.
2. Connect your controller keyboard’s MIDI Out to a MIDI In port on MIDISPORT.
3. Connect one of the MIDI Output ports on MIDISPORT to the MIDI In of your sound module.
4. Configure your MIDI sequencing software to send and receive MIDI signals from MIDISPORT. Consult your sequencing
software’s documentation to learn how to do this.

In Cubase:
* Open up Devices » Device Setup
* Click on Default MIDI ports
* Select MIDI device for In and Out.

You do know MIDI is only a signal right? No sound travels through MIDI cables.

You're going to have to spend some time studding how MIDI works my friend, there is thousands of websites and forums filled with everything you need to know. When you get your head around it it's awesome, you'll be able to play your sound modules live on your controller keyboard through Cubase.

When you hit a note on your MIDI controller keyboard it will tell your sound module what to do through MIDI signals but the sound comes through audio cables. MIDI is simply information.

You have to connect the audio cables to your soundcard or mixer.

As somebody suggested you're better of ditching the hardware, it's unnecessary these days, all you need is a controller keyboard. Soft synths are king and so simple to use, plus you can download everything cracked, no need to pay for anything. ;)

With all due respect, I would ignore that whole post to save confusion. MIDI is note information and data only, not audio.

Follow impermanence's post, it's the most intuitive ;)

my sound card has 2 audio in and out it's an emu 0404 what do you suggest new soundcard or audio interface ?

sometimes it drives me nuts setting up stuff configuring installing etc then trawling through forums to get info ! for example this morning i wanted to get a couple of hours in on a track i'm working on instead i'm dicking about on the net getting info

i thought i'd treat myself to some hardware for some hands on knob twiddling fun. plus decent hardware 15 yrs ago was an obscene price and wanted to take advantage of the current low prices and believe hardware will give me an edge

yeah i've d/l lots of stuff waves d16 group massive fm7+8 korg legacy albino imposcar PSP. like i say wanted some hands on stuff.

thanks for everyones replies and help :) :)

I have a sound blaster 1024, a very old sound card but still I had no problems using the midi mapper and connecting keyboards and sound generators to it.

The only trouble I had with Cubase was with the timing and sync. After that
it was all straight forward, plug and play.

A mixer is always handy, I have a Spirit Notepad for years, cheap and effective.

Your sound card has a left and right audio in and a left and right audio out, you can connect one of the sound modules directly to the card and simply plug in the other one when you need it, you don't really need an audio interface. The Audio out on the card is for your monitors if you have any.

Access Virus audio out left and right -> Sound card audio in left and right. Set up the MIDI cables as stated above. Make sure your sound card settings are correct.

A new multi input sound card would work, but the cheapest option is to use a mixer to sum the audio from your MIDI hardware in to the audio in of your card.

Yep, I can't live without the hardware personally, as you can see from my set up:

:D :)

thanks again

i'll play about with the one synth at the mo (access b) and then get a mixer. suppose there will be issues with midi sync and lagging etc.

the emu 0404 did my head in enough with all the patch bay stuff (which i've bypassed) great sound but i did like the m-audio audiophile for it's simplicity i'm using a novation-k station as my midi controller. thing is i'm using the same pc for internet, film and tv watching aswell as for music.

thanks for all the links impermenance you're a great help !

the 303 has gone, I was putting blue LEDs in on that pic.

I've had a few of those, my first cost £25, but that was back in the day before Acid house had happened, they're good controlling an SH101 too, as the 303 sends the slide & accent information through CV.

I have sold loads of analogue gear, including a Moog Rogue, TR808, SH101, Yamaha CS10, etc. I've got a few more bits to sell, as I'm building a modular at the moment, and the only analogue synths I have use Hz/V, I need 1V/Oct for full integration with my the modular. The modular just circuits at the moment, or I would have some pics, when I get the panels and cabinet built, I'll get some more pics up ;)

Bad idea. Think about creating another partion with a minimal windows install if this doesn't create even more problems.

I have an Audiophile, great little soundcard, and I use a Novation KS4 as my controller keyboard, it's just a longer version of the K-Station.

You shouldn't have any latency issues, make sure you're using the ASIO drivers in Cubase.

Please do. You sound like a total tech head, using a modular synth is too much for me never mind building one. :D

I have an old 24 track Seck analogue console here, it's pretty big though and I haven't a clue what it's worth (never seen one second-hand in all the time I've had it), I recently replaced it with a Mackie 32 track
