Evening all,

It's 23:44 Sunday evening, London and about 5 minutes ago where I live there was a very short power cut or power surge or something. All lights went out, plug sockets lost power. TV went off, router went of for a split second then came straight back on again only to set off a load of car alarms that I can hear are still going like the clappers.

As I've never witnessed a power cut, I was just wondering if this is generally what happens?

Anyone else experienced it?

I get this sometimes, but I live out in the sticks. It can be caused by something disrupting the line, like lightening. There's an automatic switch that turns off the power supply to protect it when this happens and then tries to reconnect it after a few seconds.

It's very windy tonight so maybe something blew onto the powerline.

hello multiversal,

well, power cuts or surges are what you went through, yes. it was a very very short one. i experienced loads of power surges in Africa. was so common that the government story was that it was the opposing party creating havoc. wich was a huge lie as we found out before , because after the peace agreement was signed the power surges continued the same and this time there was no opposing "bandits" to blame! LOL...

ONLY THING STRANGE ABOUT YOUR POWER CUT/SURGE ARE THE ALARMS OF CARS "GOING LIKE THE CLAPPERS"
the alarms of houses could go mad, but CARS????? they aren't connected to power supllies outside the car, so SOMETHING smells a dead rat to me.

They could have been house alarms now that you mention it. I don't know what the difference in sound is between the two so It could have been...

The power cut is on the news now as they try to fix a couple of streets (9am monday london).

If it was an explosion, then that could explain the car alarms too. The explosion could have been lightening (thunder) or a surge in the local feeder box (to the houses around, cant think of the real name :p) The surge could be lightening again or some other effecting agent.

The results could be the same as far as the alarms are concerned.

The real question is this though. How did you feel about it? Did you feel 'ready' or lost or ... what? Not too personal a question, is it? Did you feel exited? I know I did in the power distribution cuts of the 70s in my past.

It's why you need a surge protector for your electrical goods such as computer (don't forget the modem and telephone cable too), TV, fridge etc.

It was too quick to really even register a thought really.

For some reason it seems that big brother is running out of power. Had a real power outage here aswell. I heard that in the USA they cut on the percentage of running street lanterns.

I know what you mean. But that means you are on top of it I think. :)

In the UK they cut the supply (BY TURNING IT OFF) and leaving only a few on at junctions and the like. They dont do it in my area, but if they did, I would not hesitate in claiming in the event of a fall.

A couple of years ago my ADSL modem got fried and stopped working. I took it back to my local computer shop and the guy said, oh yeah we have had loads of these back due to all the recent thunderstorms, what happens is the phone lines get struck and it ruins your modem. I think this is what happened to this one so you will have to buy a new one.

Interesting, said I, can you prove that?

He said no and then conceded and gave me a new one for free! :D

Fuck surge protectors, just blame the companies and tell them their products are crap and get new ones for free.
