An uncommon event tonight.
The moon is reported to be over 50.000 kilometers closer to earth than it normally is. There would be an great opportunity for sky-gazers to observe better details of teh moon surface, given that your area has a clear sky.
Quite coincidental, a full moon is right around the corner and it is truly a pretty sight.
I just hope that if the moon decide to collide with earth it will happen when the moon is just half or even smaller.
related links would be appreciated.

Saturday night special: Biggest full moon of '09
Moon will be nearly full, rising earlier Friday night and later Sunday night
If skies are clear Saturday, go out at sunset and look for the giant moon rising in the east. It will be the biggest and brightest one of 2009, sure to wow even seasoned observers.
Earth, the moon and the sun are all bound together by gravity, which keeps us going around the sun and keeps the moon going around us as it goes through phases. The moon makes a trip around Earth every 29.5 days.
But the orbit is not a perfect circle. One portion is about 31,000 miles (50,000 km) closer to our planet than the farthest part, so the moon's apparent size in the sky changes. Saturday night (Jan. 10) the moon will be at perigee, the closest point to us on this orbit.

Slightly foggy here (Derbyshire) so the brightness is diminished, but still beautiful. Not quite telescope weather unfortunately:(

dont forget during the full moon:
"The sun and moon are now [partially] opposite each other, with the moon rising at sunset and setting in early morning.
People are prone to irritation and annoyance, or over-excitement, at the time of the full moon (http://www.gaias-garden.co.uk/Articles/moon.html) and the days leading up to it - the unrest and emotional turmoil is evident, and crime statistics rise dramatically!
As mentioned in the waxing section above, wounds bleed more heavily at full moon.
Growth above soil reaches its zenith now. Tests and research have shown that the concentration of healing extracts in herbs [at the time of picking] is dependent on the moon - full moon is considered a powerful time to gather your herbs and mushrooms! and if it's a clear night, you have the added benefit of the moon's glow to light your way.
Pliny the Elder [c.23 - 79AD] noted that chicks hatched on full moon were apt to be healthiest.
Christmas trees which are felled in the time honoured moon governed way - on the third day before the eleventh full moon of the year - will apparently keep their needles for longer than those felled later. It is also generally accepted that the waning moon is a good alternative felling time.
It is easy to 'do wrong' on the gardening front during a full moon - stick to gathering any herbs that you need, and leave any other garden work for another day. "

I took notice yesterday and some days prior that the moon is very much more present in the sky than it was 'before'.
It could be easily mistaken as a cloud now.
Strangely though I first had the impression that the moon was moving away.
Maybe the moon really plays the role of what might have been mistaken as Planet X by clairvoyants.

When I worked in the ambulance service, we had more 999 calls (and alot of the time, just ringing 999 and kicking off) from people with mental health issues on a full moon

I am setting up my telescope now,i didn't know that the moon was 50.000 km closer, its a bit foggy here but it could give me clear shots,i can see if i can make pictures!
The moon is spectacular here (Upper Midwest USA). Sky is clear as a bell. It's quite something to see, and it is closer to the earth which makes it appear bigger and brighter. Very nice.

You do know the moon doesnt really disappear when it wanes... right? All 1.65 nonillion pounds of moon are still there, whether its a new moon, or full moon.
