I think "news" sources like BBC or SKY NEWS want people to discuss these silly and meaningless events to prevent us from thinking about the REAL issues such as this one - ID cards have already been issued to UK subjects.

Well I can see how this could be seen as funny, but I'm a naturally empathetic person, so my first response was not to laugh, but to feel as I would for anybody who had just tripped in public.
I don't want to be a party-pooper, but I make no excuse for my empathy, as I believe its what separates us from them, and its what will ensure 'we' (humanity) will win in the end.
