Hmmm

I'd be interested in others suggestions...

Windows: Windows Movie Maker
Mac: iMovie
Linux: Kdenlive

You can get started now if you have Windows XP or Vista.

In order for people to see your video, you need to create an account with Youtube, and upload it. Then you can add video description, titles, and keywords so your video can be searched. This is all a manner of getting used to how Youtube works.

Now to make your own video, first learn the different types of videos:

1. Simplest is recording whatever you want live using a camcorder. Then you upload it to your computer as a WMV, mpg, mov, and whatnot. Youtube will pick up those files when you upload them from the computer to Youtube.

2. The next simplest is using Windows Media Movie Maker to create a slide show. It's all a manner of figuring out how the program works. Basically you drag and drop movie clips, pictures, and songs in one area. Then you drag and drop from that area to the audio track or video track. You want both audio track and video track to be insync so that music starts and ends where you want in the video track. You can add special effects, transistioning effects, and subtitles or text. This is usually enough to make a documentary about the Illuminati.

If you found a video on youtube that you like and it has a peice of video that you want, you can download the video from Keepvid.com, then use a program like Adobe Premier to slice out the video clip from the youtube video that you downloaded. Now that can be put into Windows Media Movie Maker.

Save your work in Windows Media Movie Maker. When you're ready to make the video, click publish, and keep clicking "Next" unless you want to mess with the filetype settings. If you don't know anything, it's good enough to just keep pressing Next. It'll ask you where to save it. That's the place where YouTube will pick up the file. So remember it. Better yet, save it to Desktop.

3. The harder one combines a movie that you record with a camcorder and special effects. The special effects like shooting eye lasers are not in Movie Maker. It only has simple special effects like film filtering which makes the video look like it's in the 1940's or something. You need Adobe After Effects for the big time independent movie special effects.

Hope I helped.

One video editor/utility I use is Sony Vegas, which has a few cool things on it like watermarking and embedding logos and things.
