I was looking in The Body Shop for some 'safe' anti perspirant deodorant and thought this might be the place to buy some without a host of chemical toxins. I was shown to the roll-on Aloe Vera products and was a bit taken aback when I read the ingredients that also included Aluminum Chlorohydrate...
Aqua (Water) (Solvent/Diluent), Aloe barbadensis (Aloe Vera Gel) (Skin Soothing Agent), Aluminum Chlorohydrate (Anti Perspirant Active), Steareth-2 (Emulsifier), Glycerin (Humectant), Steareth-21 (Emulsifier), Sorbitol (Humectant), C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate (Emulsifier), Isodecyl Neopentanoate (Isodecyl Neopentanoate) (Skin Conditioning Agent), Octyldodecanol (Emollient), Panthenol (Skin/Hair Conditioning Agent), Glyceryl Stearate (Emulsifier), Bisabolol (Skin Soothing Agent).

Aluminum chlorohydrate is an astringent that is used as a topical antiperspirant or body deodorant. Although it's the least irritating of the aluminum salts, it can still result in allergic reactions. But here's where it gets stickier: Aluminum also happens to be a neurotoxin that alters the function of the blood-brain barrier, linking it to Alzheimer's disease and cancer. We don't have any conclusive proof, however, that antiperspirants actually increase your risk of getting Alzheimer's.

I've gone off the Body Shop products a bit lately for this very reason. I'm sure they used to use less chemicals but these days they're sneaking lots of shite into their products, I also read something recently about them using nanotechnology as well, with hardly any research being done in this area, it's really not good!!:(

Everything in excess is toxic. If you buy a deodorant without aluminum, you will not quit sweating. It's the aluminum that make you sweat less by blocking your sweating glands or something similar.
If you look for a deodorant without aluminum in it, you could as well go without deodorant and just use soap or whatever.

I agree, but I believe the main point here is the fact that you instantly expect better from the Body Shop (ie natural ingredients etc), when infact they're just as bad, if not worse, than mainstream products but at a much higher price! Bollox to the Body Shop I say, lol!:p

The Body Products are not natural at all it seems, I have seen more chemicals in the ingredients than ever. You can buy natural deodorants from Lush. They never make things with aluminium salts. There are a few chemicals in them as preservatives but the rest is natural.

Yeah I agree ustane, I tend to use more Lush products now than the Body Shop. My favourite soap from there atm is "Honey I Washed the Kids", it's delicious:) Haven't tried their deodorants yet though, any particular favourite you have from there?

well, speaking of cosmetics i got this mail today from a friend regarding shampoos etc. that have been banned in the gulf. i'll list them out here if there's anyone using these, and then go on to say why they're a big no-no:
-paul mitchell
-garnier
-l'oreal elvive
-clinic all clear
-VO5
-palmolive naturals
-body shop pink grapefruit shower gel
...all these products contain sodium laureth sulfate, which is actually a floor cleaner. SLS is used so as to produce more foam.
imagine what a floor cleaner can do to your hair and scalp... it damages your roots and your skin too.
also, look out for SLS in toothpaste.

Honestly it bothers me that people aren't trustworthy enough to have there own pleasant scent without having to buy something to mask themselves. I never use anti perspirant or deoderizor or any of that shit cause I don't mind the way I smell and neither do most people. We have been conditioned to not enjoy the scent of others. It is natural for us to enjoy the scent of other humans! Nothing in the world I have ever smelled smelled as great as my past lovers.

I have stopped using any deodorants for about 2 months now. In fact I actually LIKE my 'human smell'.
I have told a couple of friends of mine about it and they have suggested using 'natural' deodorant but I have a theory......apart from feet, armpits seem to be the source of body odour, I believe that through your pits you eliminate certain toxins from your body so using any form of deodorant would keep them locked in. :)
C,mon guys, I LOVE the smell of a man, chuck that Lynx in the bin, and Im also fed up walking past women who plaster on the perfume, it makes me gag!

totally agree, I've not used any type of deodorant or that kind of thing since I was about 12 or whenever i started sprouting armpit hairs and it was the 'done' thing to do, horrible manky stuff it is!I find very rarely do I ever smell from sweat....peoples personal smell can also be indicators that somethings out of balance in thier system too as you'll notice a slight change which just doesnt sit right with you....hard to say but you know it yourself the same as your hair and skin changeds can indicate the same things.
The body shop are a fuckin joke now have been for years.......shame Anita or whatever she was calleds 'legacy' has become the very thing she set out her company as an alternative to originally.............

This is what i use i totally recommend, check it out guys:

Here's the ingrediants: SD alcohol 40-B, water, salvia officinalis (sage) oil, lavandin oil, citrus medica limonum (lemon) peel oil. That's it!!
I'll type the description on the bottle for you:
Unlike many anti-perspirants which contain aluminum and synthesized chemical ingrediants, Burt's Bees Herbal Deoderant does not prevent the body from perspiring, which is a natural cleansing process necessary to release toxins.
Instead, our essential oil blend of sage, lemon, and lavender minimizes and neutralizes odors naturally.
pH balanced
No Phthalates
No Parabens
Biodegradable Formula
and Not Tested On Animals
There is finally the right products out there, there just needs to be a rise in demand for them. I'm lucky i have a great natural health food store where i live.

Nice one! What is it with us though, are we THAT abhorrent that we have to disguise what we smell like? Do we really hate ourselves this much?
Answer...no...its THEM that invented deodorant and anti-perspirant, not just for revenue either :(

i LOVE perfumes :| and i like deodorant, not because i smell but because there's no harm in smelling like a million bucks ;)
i'm careful about my choices though, i never use products tested on animals and i just don't overdo/bathe myself in perfume.. i use just about enough :) and it's also very hot and humid here, i sweat a lot and i exercise a lot too, so yeah.
but i think nothing- and i mean nothing- smells better than freshly bathed skin.

Don't any of you use crystals
Natural mineral crystals are excellent deodorants, and the are 100% safe.

beldazar yet again I am with you totally!
Have you noticed that people who use these things really do stink when they stop using them at first, it seems to take a while for them to develop thier own natural way of not stinking yet still sweating.Sweating is totally natural and normal and unless people have other stuff going on (in which case its a good indicator of this!)or have eaten strong smelling foods etc then sweat is usually not an unpleasant smell.
preventing 'sweating' from the armpits is a pretty damn stupid thing to do for obvious reasons and like you say there beldazar it def aint just for revenue in my eyes anyway

Great minds think alike hey?
Louise Hay, author of 'You can heal your life' says that people with bad breath have something bad inside that needs clearing.
And perhaps that fits in with my theory that using deodorants prevents the release of some toxins from the body

too damn right they do beldazar!!!!
I can go along with that concept totally......when people are off colour or ill or have something going on then the slight change in that persons natural smell can be very interesting.....the sense of smell is such a powerful communicator yet we are taught from birth almost to not use this sense that says enough in itself dunnit...........
I believe that physical symptoms are manifestations of other things and smells are very important in this.....smells relay so much info to us especially our own smells...mad innit we have this wonderful strong sense which most people dont even realise...we are taught its just a 'smell'....yet this sense is so much more than that, as much info can be gleaned from smells as we glean from sound and touch and sight yet this is played down so much and masked and manipulated......if you go with the concepts of evolotion and anatomy (not saying I do) then the limbic system is apparently one of the oldest parts of the brain (?????)

Yes. A boyfriend of mine had an awful smell one night, he smelled of rotten meat. I told him to go to the doctors and he was told he had serious blood poisoning and the doc said he could have died!
I really need to pack up smoking again. I miss being able to smell properly.
the last time I quit, it had been raining and my friend complained. We walked past a tree and I was so amazed with the smell coming off it, we could have been under a monsoon and I wouldnt have cared :)
You have really got me thinking about this subject now, thankyou!

ooooh excellent beldazar!
and excellent this has got you thinking cos it has me too so looks like mutual thanks!
The manipulation of our senses so much so we rely so much on 1 or 2 in this 3-d world is bloody obscene like a lot of this stuff. Its not what we are being told as usual its what we are not being told or made aware of in this 3d program we all seem to be running in....
people talk of balance yet our senses are so unbalanced yet people dont seem to think about balance within the senses in more mainstream ways.....watch children, they use all their senses, taste is totaly unused by us (I wont even get on bout that con hehehe!)yet one of the first things kids do it to 'taste' them....not 'eat' them as many hysterical parents seem to think!
Be good to hear where you go with this now your thinking about it beldazar!
