Was thinking about this recently and I watched the BBC video "The Death of Yougoslavia" and gave up after an hour and 1/2 as it blamed everything on Nationalism and how poor Lord Carrington tried so hard to teach them Balkans to be civilised...*puke*

Anyways, I am asking because I went on holiday to Yougoslavia in the late 1980s (Dubrovnik, Belgrade and Sarajevo) and found it to be a very nice country filled with happy, friendly people, beautiful girls and it was a complete shock to me a couple of years later when they were shooting and bombing each other.

Can anyone tell me what REALLY happened or is the BBC documentary not propaganda?

These things are planned well in advance with a few hiccups along the way,

The Axis Powers occupied Yugoslavia and split it up. The Independent State of Croatia was established as a Nazi puppet state, ruled by the fascist militia known as the Ustaše that came into existence in 1929, but was relatively limited in its activities until 1941. German troops occupied Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as part of Serbia and Slovenia, while other parts of the country were occupied by Bulgaria, Hungary, and Italy. During this time the Independent State of Croatia created concentration camps for anti-fascists, communists, Serbs, Gypsies and Jews. One such camp was the Jasenovac concentration camp. A large number of men, women and children, Jews, Serbs, and Croat resistance members, were executed in these camps.

Divide and rule.

Kissinger referred pointedly to military men as "dumb, stupid animals to be used" as pawns for foreign policy.

Thanks but this is old news. Certainly not the happy and seemingly nice country I visited in the 1980's.

Are there any DI posters from the Balkans who can enlighten me further?
