Instead of being rude to the OP you should perhaps give some information. I dont think this ascension thing will happen, do you? All of this 2012 stuff is based on the mayan calendar but not everybody agrees with the start date so the end date could be wrong. Also people keep quoting the end date as 21/12/2010 when I have read it is actually 12/12/2012/. Maybe this would make more sense as the next baktun will be 13.

The world has gone through many massie changes and this is just one of them but I dont think it related to the calendar. The lives of people and the universe are not that rigidly directed. Also, if the maya were so good at predicting what will happen then how did they not forsee their own demise?

I have read that during the life of Montezuma the 52 year cycle came to an end and there was a huge ritual. All old stuff was destroyed and people fasted for 12 days. On the final night they watched the stars, fearing the world was going to end but once the pleaides passed the relevant poin in the sky they saw it as a new beginning. The temples were further built upon and freshly painted and people began to rebuild their lives. So what is different about this happening back then and the 2012 myth?

I have seen some estimates of when the calendar should aave started and 13 baktun varies considerably depending on whos opinion you go with. Some of them are tens of years different.

I read that a lot of the dates are actually very similar and usually always fall on 2012. Though I've only just started reading the book on it. Though there are a few dates on the Internet and they're way off 2012. Is this what you were refering to?

read this link. It shows how there is no real solid date about when the baktun changes. Perhaps the people who came up with 21/12/12 were biased by christian conceptions that the world would end soon. The numbers do also seem to be a convenient fit even though the mayan and Julian calendars are not equivalent.
