A team of Canadian surgeons got a shock when the patient they were operating on began shedding dark greenish-black blood, the Lancet reports.

The man emulated Star Trek's Mr Spock - the Enterprise's science officer who supposedly had green Vulcan blood.

In this case, the unusual colour of the 42-year-old's blood was down to the migraine medication he was taking.

The man's leg surgery went ahead successfully and his blood returned to normal once he eased off the drug.

Dark green

The patient had been taking large doses of sumatriptan - 200 milligrams a day.

This had caused a rare condition called sulfhaemoglobinaemia, where sulphur is incorporated into the oxygen-carrying compound haemoglobin in red blood cells.

Describing the case in The Lancet, the doctors led by Dr Alana Flexman from St Paul's Hospital in Vancouver wrote: "The patient recovered uneventfully, and stopped taking sumatriptan after discharge.

"When seen five weeks after his last dose, he was found to have no sulfhaemoglobin in his blood."

The man had needed urgent surgery because he had developed a dangerous condition in his legs after falling asleep in a sitting position.

The surgeons performed urgent fasciotomies, limb-saving procedures which involve making surgical incisions to relieve pressure and swelling caused by the man's condition - compartment syndrome.

In compartment syndrome, the swelling and pressure in a restricted space limits blood flow and causes localised tissue and nerve damage.

It is commonly caused by trauma, internal bleeding or a wound dressings or cast being too tight.

According to the science fantasy television series Star Trek, Mr Spock had green blood because the oxygen-carrying agent in Vulcan blood includes copper, rather than iron, as is the case in humans.

Mr Spock had a human mother, and Vulcan father, from who he inherited his inability to make sense of human emotion, as well as his green blood.

hmmm ... something about this story makes me suspicious ...

But, then I'm just another paranoid conspiracy theorist who thinks everyone is
out to get me. ;)

Yes well it seems a bit odd to me too.

"Papua New Guinea is often billed as ‘The Land of the Unexpected’ and it is certainly that. Five small species of skinks with green blood are found here, the only green-blooded land vertebrates in the world. "

The green blood is a bit freaky, innit ? eeeewwww. is this the start of the getting us used to green blood thing ? whether its a drug side effect or not, it doesnt sound 'right' to me! they should be able to find natural remedies that do not turn the blood green ......

notaslave, did you notice how far the info on the side effect went back?

I am glad someone else has noticed something about side effects suddenly appearing on the internet, especially glad that wikipedia has been brought up too, I mentioned this in a post of mine in the first few days of me being on this site, and removed it because when I publicised something, things started changing on the internet, now call me paranoid, I dont mind, but certain drugs have had certain effects added and also removed recently, wikipeia often comes at the top of search engines and apparently anyone can add or change or remove stuff on there so to use it as a reference is not a good idea.

I checked something on wiki sometime in may, and there was no sign of certain things, at all. but when I checked back a few days later, there was a history of the certain things that went all the way back to april, so not only was new stuff added, but it was also backdated too! be warned wikipedia is not a good reference to use for serious matters, as any tom dick or harry can add what they like to it, but I imagine that to backdate something months behind, is not something anyone can do.

Or a dip-shit from Denmark?

This part triggered my fear-propaganda alarm system. I don't know exactly why, but my internal alarm system started flashing like crazy when reading that sentence.

Honestly graflok.

By now u must have read my response to ur rant in the rant room and now i find this.

Your choice of offense seems to be one sentenced, unstructured and most of all unintelligent insults which doesn't even move me the least bit. If you have a problem with me or the things i write, then please do me a favor and articulate yourself in a matter which at least would make it seem like you put some effort into it instead of low measured attempts of sucker punches.

Thank you in advance.

Yes I did. But, once again your brilliant comeback is off-target because I
have no idea what post you are referring to and I doubt I ever wrote it
in the first place.

Having a hard time telling us apart, are you?

If it didn't move you, why did you bother with this bitter response?

But, you're right about many of my posts consisting of one sentence.
Why use more if it's not needed?
But, "unstructured" and "unintelligent"? I don't think so.

The only problem I have with what you write is wondering what language you're using.
You might try using a spell or grammar checker.

And, there's nothing wrong with using sucker punches when the sucker deserves it.

Thank you in advance.

Think nothing of it because that's what it meant to me. ;)

Yes I was aware that you can join and edit the pages in Wiki, however I dont recall how far back the history went. I tried a few earlier dates to see whether there were any listed side effects and there were none in the ones I checked. Therefore the side effect was listed when the news broke.

I would agree that to backdate something months behind would be more of a site admin thing than a registered wiki contributor.

The reason I checked wiki for side effects was because I had typed the drug name into google and checked a few pages which did not list the green blood as a side effect.

I dont doubt that such a condition exists. I do think the drugs companies will have known it was a possible side effect though. Their motives for not publicising this prior to it happening is anyones guess.

{whispers} Further ... I still actually think its codswallop. My instinct tells me somethings not right.

unless its from severe use of eating/smoking magical herbs, where the hell do they get off thinking green blood is acceptable, I would have not liked it and represented myself against the manufacturers, just as an example and to avoid anyone else getting green blood ;)
