I suddenly realised: 'they' have no direct power at all. It's humans who have the power. Hence Hollywood, and the endless spin, and fear/anger techniques, rituals, symbols, etc etc. Hollywood 'futuristic' films - possibly the grandest illusion ever made.
All their power is through manipulation of humans. That's it. See through the symbols, and the subconscious influences, and move on. Their actual power is TINY; maybe even non-existent. I don't think '1984' is a novel about totalitarianism itself - I think it's a novel about the way humans make Big Brother happen. It wasn't Tony Blair personally who attacked Iraq; Gordon Brown won't be there manning the British ID centres. It's ALL human-human contact that makes it happen; and that's the one thing they haven't wanted us to realise, throughout the centuries. Whether humans were burning each other at the stake, or declaring war on each others' countries - it all comes down to humans doing it to humans. This is OUR world. WE own it, WE work it, WE make whatever happens, happen.
The Terry Pratchett novel 'Lords and Ladies' has elvin characters - creatures whose only power comes from the way they can get into humans' minds, and enchant them; make humans feel the elves are superior. That's it. Nothing else. Take away the enchantment, and you see them for the small, powerless creatures they are.
If humans would stop falling for the spin, and the lies, what could 'they' do?
You can feel the excitement of 'them' as they manoeuvre carefully, carefully, don't scare the 'sheeple' too soon, get the boundaries in place first, get the new laws out, and the army, and the spin, etc etc, while they wait for the final orgasmic moment when they can pull the net 'closed' and get the energy. Maybe they feel they've never been closer to total 'control'.
But it's all an illusion. They'll never have power here, even if the worst does happen - because the only power they have is what they can get humans to do to each other: what they can get humans to 'give' to them. They rule in black, and white, and grey shadows - but the colour that is real is us, and will always be there, just under the surface, breaking free again and again. They have no power over it. Even if the worst does happen, it'll be cardboard boundaries, powerless 'rules', paper hoops, once humanity stops accepting them. Maybe that's what 'they' need - get it out of their system, put the whole totalitarian thing in place, only to learn, once and for all, that it is an illusion. And the bit of us that is 'them' needs to realise it, too.(?)
And that reality is love, and control is an illusion.
And although they're sooo hyped up and excited just now, maybe somewhere, deep deep down, they'd be relieved if the whole thing was taken away from them(?) They must know they're on a hiding to nothing; like naughty children who know they need the adults, and boundaries, if they're ever to grow (mixed metaphors there, hope that makes sense.)
We've got the power. We only need to realise it. To anyone in Britain reading this - all we have to do is refuse to get an ID card, and they can't happen. It won't take the majority to say 'No' to make the cards unworkable. Just enough of us.
Bottom line: it's humans who kill and maim and torture and enslave humans. It's humans who are the jailors and the executioners and the ones who make Big Brother happen/ keep it happening. We've got the power(!) Maybe it was stolen/hijacked from us; bewitched 'away', so we forgot we had it; felt we weren't 'good' enough, 'wise' enough to use it. But it's still ours. We need to realise we're good enough to have it. We need to take it back. Maybe not as a collective, but as individuals. No more 'just following orders'. The buck stops here.
Also: see the bit of us that wants control over others, and change it. NOT in a horrible, hurtful to yourself way; just in the way that shows we're all connected; maybe our wishes/vibes/perceived needs help make this place, etc etc.
Apologies if this is preaching to the choir ...
