IGN has been informed by a reliable source that Sony Pictures is developing a remake of The Karate Kid that will be produced by Will Smith's Overbook Entertainment and Jerry Weintraub. Weintraub also produced the 1984 film, starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, and its three sequels.

We were also advised that Smith's son Jaden, 9, is attached to star in the remake. Jaden Christopher Syre Smith starred opposite his dad in last year's The Pursuit of Happyness, which was also released by Sony. We understand that this new Karate Kid is currently out to writers.

IGN didn't hear back from Weintraub's office or Smith's reps by time of publish, so until there's official confirmation consider this a rumor.

I really hope this doesn't go ahead, the original was the best, if this is made I am asking everyone to boycot it..... :)

This film I will boycott.

How the hell can you improve the original karate kid unless they want to add matrix style choreography, which would make the film look dumb.

This is definitely a case of hollywood remaking a film just to make money.

BOYCOTT, BOYCOTT, BOYCOTT!

I think there are other more suited forums for this kind of crap.

Heat magazine or Hello might have websites?

As a practioner of the arts martial and in particular the Goju Ryu system the inventor of which was honoured in the original film in the character of Mr Miagi who in turn taught the Goju system to Daniel I have to say who cares?

By the by the kata that Daniel performs (badly and incomplete) in the last tourny fight scene in the first film is kata Seiyunchin which is a brown belt Kata and in the real world would not have been taught to Daniel at such an early stage of his Goju education. There are three katas before Seiyunchin plus all of the applications for each one which is a great deal of training. The first kata he would have learnt in todays system is Dai Ichi which teaches the basic defence and counter moves however if you want to get really traditional about it then upon arriving at a Dojo for the first time and the Sensei agreeing to teach you he would have chosen a kata for you based upon your build and Daniel would have been given kata Saifa which is designed for people who are not tall or heavy and generally fleet of foot. My chosen kata, for example, would have been Seiynchin due to my build, weight and height and it is know as the earth kata. Saifa also happened to be the original first kata before the creation of Dai Ichi and Dai Ni back in the day.

The Crane Block move is bollox. There is no such thing.

Indeed as far as the five point palm bit is concerned. However it is entirely possible to kill someone with a palm strike to the chest in the right place causing fatal damage to the heart.

yes its general discussion but perhaps relating in some to the world we live in not some shit remake of a film.
Boo hoo they remake films all the time, they could care less about the fans, its about money. Simple solution: you can always not watch the remake and just watch the original. There problem solved can we move on now?

This might sound a bit Hollywood but yes it does have a specific name and it is in fact a secret Goju technique and out of respect for Goju I am not at liberty to divulge what it is. In the right hands (a Master) it is a lethal technique but thankfully in the wrong hands it will rarely work. It is not that simple a technique. If it was we would have thousands dying in any activity or accident that involves chest strikes. The rib cage does its job very well and the heart is very tough and not that easy to stop it beating. In their efforts to reach Shodan (black belt) the Kyu grades will learn a number of different kata but typically what they would not usually be taught is the hidden tecniques that populate the different kata. Many of these techniques are quite lethal. If you are interested the Human Weapon show, which is a bit of a joke, does gloss over a few things including the chest strike but it teaches nothing. It's on youtube.

The general Karate term for a chest punch is Mune tsuki.
