Alright so I am one of the older people on this site -most likely. I never thought I'd say something like that as I have always considered myself a fashionable female and Libra rising.... I will allow it this one time- My cell phone is sitting in my drawer, disconnected. Being highly sensitive to electricity and frequencies, I just can't tolerate it near me. I grew up without cell phones and can appreciate a time when people were more considerate about talking on the phone in public. As children, we were not allowed to accept phone calls from our friends during dinner time which was a good thing. I am without a doubt, totally uncool.
I can see it happening all around me. Although cell phones and wireless technology is awesome, it feels very dangerous to me. People are on cell phones in the parking lots, they are talking in the grocery stores, restaurants, doctors offices, movie theatres, they are talking everywhere. Even my accountant was talking to me as he flushed the toilet in the background!!!
Yes, I get it... Business as usual, kids, errands, deadlines, etc. I understand the importance of high tech communications. What I am concerned about is the rampant loss of honor and respect that is witnessed through the public display of cell phone behavior. It is everywhere. It is the manner in which the behavior could continue to create a callousness where the beauty of life is bypassed in exchange for immediate gratification of the "call". The more we react to image marketing, the more we become targets. By the time we have become puppets it is almost too late to change the behavior. It is more than just rude and annoying cell phone behavior, it could be the beginning of the end of our freedom to think for ourselves and remember the beauty that we missed out on while we were checking our messages. -k

I agree with you. What about the MP3 thingies stuffed into ears to listen to every time one steps outside? On buses, walking the dog, out shopping, people are 'tuning out' big time.
Alan Watt talks about Bread and Circuses. If we the people have enough things to entertain us, we will be less likely to realise what the PTB are actually doing. If it looks at all like the people (you know, us kids) start to 'cotton on' , they just feed us more 'Circuses'. Play Station, Pod Casts, BIGGER TV's, (have you seen the size of some of them for Gawd's sake:rolleyes: ) Audio systems to render one's self deaf in the car!, Rock Concerts, (be there or be square), World of Warcraft, Second Life, etc etc
The kids buy into these things lock stock and barrow.
My own daughter bought World of Warcraft and the sequel, and I have hardly seen her since! She lives in my home as well:confused:
The dumbing down is almost complete....only a small step away from the brain chip folks (as Alan would say) .
Boy, we will all be happy then eh? we won't have the ability to think at all....so that will clear up all that worry we have about sorting out our lives...it will be dictated to us via some electronic thingy...most people are only too happy to 'plug themselves in to one if not all of the new toys.
I personally have biffed my TV, I will never have a cell phone EVER, I only have the computer, which by all accounts will be a thing of the past once the PTB get a complete hold of the system.
That's why I garden and grow my own food, and read books, and try a bit of art. That stuff makes much more sense to me, and besides, I am able to think and consider things while I do them. I'll have to buy an instrument of some sort so I can make my own music, as I love music. Maybe a lap Harp Hmmm.
Luv ya all heaps!

I agree with you in that the social ethics for the use of phones has declined dramatically, but I have to say that I am much more concerned about the health and environmental implications of mobile phones, i.e. increased chance of tumour growth, memory loss, hormonal disruption etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum, and what about the bees, no bees no me!

Hi wheresmyparachute,
Yes I agree this whole cell phone culture I think is really bad......I often see people outside in the street looking at their phones texting or whatever its like they are living in another world detached from this one..... peoples attention is elsewhere these days......of course that’s the way "The Powers That Be" want it.......they want people distracted so they don't realise what’s going on.......the Mayans predicted the collapse of the technological civilisation.......this might be our saving grace......may be the power needs to be switched off before the people can switch on.......

Peace

I don't have a mobile phone, and I refuse to have one! I've read too much about them. :D
Well I have a mobile phone because I need it for work. I need to be contactable but other than that I rarely use it. I hate the bloody things. I do drive long distances though, alone, and it is quite comforting to know I can call in an emergency.
I recently went to visit my son in Melbourne and had to catch a train to where he was working. I just sat there and observed everyone on the train. Total Zombies!! If they weren't talking (loudly) they were texting and/or had their MP3 players plugged in. People watching is fun :p

One of the main reasons I love the festivals, people watching, and tehn choose an interesting character from a distance, and people engage.
