Berlusconi plans to use G8 presidency to ‘regulate the internet’

Italian president and media baron Silvio Berlusconi said today that he would use his country's imminent presidency of the G8 group to push for an international agreement to "regulate the internet".

Speaking to Italian postal workers, Reuters reports Berlusconi said: "The G8 has as its task the regulation of financial markets... I think the next G8 can bring to the table a proposal for a regulation of the internet."

Italy's G8 presidency begins on January 1. The role is taken by each of the group's members in rotation. The holder country is responsible for organising and hosting the G8's meetings and setting the agenda. Italy's last G8 presidency in 2001, also under Berlusconi, was marred by riots at the annual meeting in Genoa.

Berlusconi didn't explain what he meant by "regulate the internet", but the mere mention of it has prompted dismay among Italian commentators. Berlusconi owns swathes of the Italian mass media.

The left-wing newspaper L'Unita wrote: "You can not say that it is not a disturbing proclamation, given that the only countries in the world where there are filters or restrictions against internet are countries ruled by dictatorial regimes: those between China, Iran, Cuba, Saudi Arabia."

La Stampa reports Italian bloggers are planning to protest against any move by the president to tighten government control over the web tomorrow. They plan to display anti-Berlusconi banners on their websites.

Any G8 move next year to "regulate the internet" led by Berlusconi is likely to attract criticism. He has often been accused of using his power to try to silence dissent. He lost a long-running libel battle against The Economist earlier this year after it said he was not "fit to run Italy" and was this week suing American critic Andrew Stille for defamation*.

However, the governments of industrialised nations have been ramping up their rhetoric against internet content they view as unacceptable. The UK has introduced new laws and revived arcane ones to clamp down on extremist websites and niche pornography. Australia is busy implementing filters. ®

Internet 2 is on it's way. Completely monitored, controlled and regulated by the powers that be.
They want the last bastion of free media taken away from us. Expect to see demonizing articles appearing in newspapers soon, most likely involving paedophilia, on-line suicide cults, internet fraud and pornography.
It wouldn't take much for the illuminati telephonic companies to 'clog-up' it's internet connections, blaming either a 'virus' or something similar, resulting in them pushing forth the idea of switching to an 'all-powerful' Internet 2 system.

Now that the 'cat's out of the bag' the internet is playing a vital role in the universal awakening that is bound to come.

It's inevitable that some dark forces are going to try to get it shut down, or at the very least heavily regulated. It's like there worst nightmare come true, the free access of information, that's what they don't like.

Berlusconi = pure evil

They hate the Internet and of course they want to control it.

However, the geeks are generally 2 steps ahead of the Nazis, so it's easier said than done for them to censor the net, also, as easy as you might think be for them to clog up Internet 1, it will be just as easy for the hackers to clog up Internet 2.

Im glad - about time they censored the web - that BBC and sky news are a nightmare - a stain on the publics free domain, which is what the web is.

in all honesty though - people like me will find away around there censorship - dont worry.

Hackers to the rescue!

basically the internet cant be removed unless they removed all communications.

we are all linked now - and even if they block certain things, they still wont be able to stop everything.

so say infowars went down - we would just use things like MIRC to discuss matters.

in actual fact this whole movement would go UNDERGROUND so to speak.

people like Alex jones would fizzle out and new kings of the network would arise.

This has happened all over the internet - look at people who conduct ileagle activity's online they don't use forums and stuff they use secure means of communications.

I know people in china whom still get to see bbc webpage and stuff as they bipass the firewalls.

It will be made harder for us but not impossible.

Yes this is true and at the same time hackers will attack Internet 2 and bring it down. These people are cleverer and more resourceful than the Nazis who are seeking to censor the web.

Don't you just love Bellrusconi, the dodgiest man in the world. Everything he does turns into "dodge":p

This guy probably can't even take a shit without cheating the toilet bowl.

Sure, regulate the internet but not Bellrusconi? It will be interesting how the rest of the eu nations react.
