Wisdom and one-liners of "philospher-coach" JOHN WOODEN

For those of you who aren't familiar with John Wooden yet, he is widely known as the greatest basketball coach of all time. The former coach of the UCLA record setting basketball team, he lead his team to an incredible 10 national championships in 12 years

His "one liners," are among the most profound you will ever hear, not just on the court or in any sporting arena, but in life.

Bill Walsh, fomer head coach of the San Francisco 49ers said,

"John wooden is a "philospher-coach" in the truest sense: a man whose beliefs, teachings, and wisdom go far beyond sports, and ultimately address how to bring out the very best in yourself and others in all areas of life...

"He is a master teacher who understands motivation, organization and psychology. Coach wooden is able to successfully share his wisdeom because he has a gift for expressing his philosophy directly and simply, in a manner accessible and applicable to everyone...

John Wooden is an American legend who would be as comfortable among the ancient sages as he is welcomed and respected by today's citizens and leaders."

I hope you enjoy these

John Woodens one liners

never mistake activity for achievement
being average means you are as close to the bottom as you are to the top
be quick, but don't hurry
discipline yourself and others won't need to
failing to prepare is preparing to fail
Nothing is stronger than gentleness
Being a role model is the most powerful form of educating
always be progressing
you can't go upward too quickly, but you sure can go down quickly
if you spend too much time learning the tricks of the trade, you may never learn the trade
Much can be accomplished by teamwork when no one is concerned about who gets the credit
You can do more good by being good than any other way

Two sets of 3's

never lie
never cheat
never steal

don't whine
don't complain
don't make excuses

7 things to do

1. be true to yourself
2. help others
3. make each day your materpiece
4. drink deeply from the good books
5. make friendship a fine art
6. build a shelter against a rainy day
7. pray for guidance and count and give thanks for your blessings every day

you cant do anything about yesterday
you can't do anything about tomorrow, it has yet to come
so make today a masterpiece

Johns dads creed

I am not what i ought to me
not what i want to be
not what I am going to be
but I am thankful that
I am better than I used to be

give it away to get it back

never believe youre better than anybody else, but remember that you're just as good as everybody else (I actually am better than everyone else so this doesn't apply to me)

you must be interested in finding the best way, not in having your own way

you are more influential than you think

be more concerned with your character than your reputation

the goal in life is the same as in basketball - make the effort to do the best you are capable of doing

perfection is what you are striving for, but perfection is an impossibility, however striving for perfection is not an impossibility

when you are through learning, you are through

learn as if you were going to live forever and live as if you were going to die tomorrow

you usually find what you are looking for

all good and worthwhile things take time

laugh with others, never at them

you cant control what happens to you, but you can control how you react

you never fail if you know you did your best

learn from the past, dont live in the past

too often we care more about a stranger's opinion of us than our own

goals should be difficult to achieve because those achieved with little effort are seldom appreciated

be a realistic optimist

never be disagreeable just because you disagree

the time to make friends is before you need them

success and attention to tiny details go hand in hand

the worthy opponent brings out the very best in you

there is a price to be paid for achieving anything

if you wish to be heard, listen

greatness is being your best when your best is needed

happiness begins where selfishness ends

earn the right to be proud and confident

the smallest good deed is better than the best intention

time spent getting even would be better spent trying to get ahead

what is right is more important than who is right

tell the truth, that way you dont have to remember a story

if we magnified blessings as much as we magnified disappointments, we would all be much happier

the mistake free person is usually sitting around doing nothing, and that is a very big mistake

fear no opponent; respect every opponent

hustle makes up for many a mistake

the harder you work, the more luck you will have

hard work is the difference. Very hard work

take whats available and make the most of it

the difficult challenge provides the best opportunity

there are no shortcuts

if youre working hard on finding a short cut, you're not working hard enough on the fundamentals

we get stronger when we test ourselves

ability can get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there

persistence is stronger than failure

everybody has a suggestion, not everybody has a decision

leaders dont just talk about doing something, they do it

for every artificial peak you create, there is a valley

once the opportunity arises, its too late to prepare

we cant be perfect, but lets see how close we can get

dont look for the big, quick improvement, seek the small improvement, one day at a time

the real contest is striving to reach your personal best

there is no substitute for hard work

talent is god-given: be humble
fame is man-given: be thankful
conceit is self given: be careful

Thanks for the post fantana!

Yeah, a lot of great quotes there. One or two are a bit 'matrixy' for my taste though e.g. "there is no substitute for hard work"....and "the harder you work, the more luck you will have"....

himmm, the PTB would LOVE those quotes as this is the illusion they have been selling us for eons.....i.e. that all good little slaves MUST strive and work hard to achieve greatness!
