The self-exposure, instant fame culture peddled by reality shows, social networking internet sites such as Facebook and – above all – the home video-sharing website YouTube has provided a "perfect storm" for vulnerable people, encouraging them to put their fantasies on a global stage, say researchers.

Joel and Ian Gold, a New York psychiatrist and Montreal academic, say they have been inundated with cases since they first expounded what they have dubbed the "Truman Syndrome" two years ago.

The title refers to the 1998 film starring Jim Carey in which the main character gradually realises his humdrum life is being filmed as a reality television show and that everyone he knows is merely acting.

The condition might seem comical - one man went to a US government building and announced he wanted his show to end - but it tended to be "absolutely debilitating" as sufferers believed they could trust no-one, said Dr Joel Gold, head of psychiatry at Bellevue Hospital in New York.

He said he had recently been contacted by the father of a girl who had contemplated suicide because she believed it was the only way of "getting out of the show".

It was also difficult to treat because, as he had found himself, sufferers will dismiss their doctors and psychiatrists as actors.

Could this be because the collective subconsious is awakening and the unawake minds are confused as they dont know what we do and the nearest thing to what they are feeling/experiencing is the truman show?

I guess it is if you want to quit early and mess everything up for the next phase.

I think you're right. If so, I don't know what's caused this overspill of awakening; I'm glad it's happening, but I wonder what triggered it as many people around me seem blissfully unaware....something triggered people to awaken...and as you say, if they don't know where the access points are that we are able to enter it could be very confusing for them. Even now I have days when waves of confusion/anger/helplessness wash over me and I was 'awake' from childhood... :confused::)

could be...I see a great deal of confused people, who are unable to make any sense of their lives especially those who have been brought up with "reality shows" and constant exposure to media, computer games etc....

those who are not aware of the manipulation and have been dumbed down ,so therefore cannot give themselves psychic protection are heading into an abyss of self destruction

They've realized they're in a game but dont know what the point of it is or who's running the show.

This may be just the re-naming of an already existing condition - I remember treating a young lad (18) around 15 years ago who was under the belief that his family were all actors.

There may be some slight re-framing of this condition since to use the Truman Show as a blueprint for what they feel is happening though. (This happens regularly - a lot of patients I've nursed over the year have had delusions that followed the basic premises of major films, tv shows etc)

Hmm when I was little I had strange recurring daydreams that I was not actually a little girl, but a grown up who was in a coma dreaming about being a little girl and that my family were not real, they were all a creation of my imagination :eek:

I think I was 'awakening.' I now know that I am not really a young woman, but a projected apsect of consciousness, like a sort of computer sprite or avatar. I think that people over the world are coming to the same realisation but the only thing they can most closely relate it to is the reality tv show, the truman show, etc

The only difference between the Truman show and me was that they never did a live feed on TV of me. No obviously there are other differences. But, having had to endure 3 decades of monitoring, of one sort or another. Is enough to make, anyone mad to a certain extent and see surveillance everywhere.
