Not a bit surprised. It isn't just the downturn of the economy: The Internet has taken a huge slice of the retail market in certain sectors. Many consumers check out potential buys in the high street and then go home to buy online at cheaper prices.
Larger chains diversifying means a smaller share all round of a particular market.

I don't really know how this market could balance itself, you can get hardware online much cheaper online and what is it that local shops can do? Keep the customers dumbed down to pay higher prizes? This would eventually eleminate even the chains of non-online shops who can't turn down the prizes to basically survive. I don't get it

I was looking for 2GB memory card or something like that for my camera and saw one in PC World for around 40 quid. I found exactly the same one on Amazon for a tenner. Fuck PC world. And fuck their shitty Duron based PC's they try and flog too.
The more the internet undermines these retail chains the better. They will close down and allow small, private businesses to open up which means the British high street will no longer look like clones of every other high street in the country.
The customer will get a decent, personal service and a chance to haggle rather than having to deal with disinterested,slack-jawed youths being used as the front to a soulless cooperation.

The staff at PC world are clueless and will sell you bullshit if you let them too.
I totally agree - fuck PC world.

I have to say most of these companies deserve what they get, the level of service in Woolworths, PC World etc... is awful. Also they use sneaky tactics and offer no innovation etc... I put a lot of thought into my business and the shopping experience at some of these stores offends me. But I feel for those who have lost their jobs.
Personally I hope that if things dont completely go to pot that independant retailers and quality service has a comeback.

Good point. What with home deliveries on supermarket shopping as well. The savings must be big where things come straight from the ware house with no costly shop rental / staff wages. Doing away with cash is being made very appealing.

I remember years ago, a mate getting a pcworld computer. It cost him a fortune and was a complete donkey with low grade parts and a poor spec for the money. It seems like they're still upto the same old game. Unfortunately, its the place where folks go who dont know a great deal about pc's. They've obviously ripped a fair few folks off to get as big as they have. They deserve to fall.
Good point btw about giving the smaller private businesses a chance. Often run by enthusiasts who understand the concept of getting business by word of mouth through good service.

EXCELLENT POST. i,m sick to death of every city looking like a clone, i used to go 40 miles to shop in another town because certain shops would be there that wasn't here now there's 4 of the same here and the same there, no choice, bring back the small retailers where choice meant choice.

I am glad that they look likely to go under. Last year the bastards at PC world signed me up for insurance on the free lap-top I got as part of a deal from Orange Broadband. They stole £9.99 from me before I noticed it in my monthly statement, I told them at the time that I specifically didn't want their insurance but had to give my bank details to sign up for the Internet contract.
those of you who want a cash society will have to swallow the higher price of actually using the local private shops.
Don't blame it on the net being cheaper, take responsibility for your choices and support the future you want.
Fuck it, arrange barter or gold/silver transactions with a local merchant, get to know them, hell make a friend, that is something internet shopping wont replace.

I won't be missing PC world or Currys, In fact I bet I don't even notice if they close down?
All those enormous TVs - ewwww !! I'm suprised anyone has room for furniture
Also far to much form filling and extended warranty avoidance is necessary.

When I went to PC World several years ago to buy a laptop I asked them what happened if it went wrong, outside 28 days they said you will have to send it back to te manufacturer
Where does it state that in law I asked , after a few baffling seconds the assistant said it's our policy,I pointed out my contract was with the retailer and then the sales assistant aggressively started spouting their policy again
I took my business elsewhere - I believe they still have this 28 day policy as do their Currys store - I avoid them too

i did a spout for PC worlds repair center. PC Service Call now known as The Tec guys.
They have a 28 day repair to store policy where you can return to store and get it changed or send it through the repair... not many happy peeps paying 800 quid for a laptop to find the hard drive nickered after 2 hours.
After 28 days your at the mercy of some computer dweeb on 11,000 a year that hasn't got a clue what the heck is wrong with your PC, they read it all from step guides like does the mouse work yes click here does the blue light flash, you'll be told to do the full recovery back to factory settings not caring what work is lost and if the hard drive has died thus meaning you have no hidden partition with the recovery on you'll be directed to the manufactures 1.50p a min line to order the discs with the back up on costing £29 and 3 weeks to come to then phone back and go through all the steps again to then confirm your hard drive has gone. If it's a PC then you wait around 4 days for the engineer to be booked, this depends on how you've been on the call if your a arse then your waiting longer. If it's a laptop you wait 4 days to have it picked up then 2-3 weeks in the repair hub then 4 days back to find when you get it back it's got a great big scratch down it hahaha or the locking catch is now busted lol
good bye Pc world @}~~~~~
