View Full Version : Egg laying hens - salmonella vaccine?

As a great fan of eggs I tend to go through a dozen or so a week and I strictly buy only organic free range.
However I have noticed that some package labels notify that the hens have been vaccinated from salmonella. This doesn't seem to breach the soil association approval for 'organic' which I find strange.
I wonder if any people have any research material on this, such as the byproducts of the vaccine ending up in the layed egg itself?
I know that vaccines for humans have many chemicals that are neurotoxins etc, would this be the same case for the vaccination of egg laying hens?
I suppose this is really down to the matter of the farm owners themelves keeping the hens under the bracket 'organic freerange' how they want to keep up food hygiene standards...

sounds dangerouse to me , if this is so then im not eating eggs coz that vaccine then goes in me and NO , its not organic then is it .
typical , if they cant poison us one way its another .

I suppose your point is clear there - the vaccinated hen = vaccinated egg yes?
What I'm concerned about is the actual standards and measures of these. If the hens get vaccinated, how often? What is in the 'salmonella vaccine' itself? Has the soil association made a 'compromise' to a supposed loophole as to be in line with mass produced food hygiene standards and labelling? I smell something fishy here..
As an example, Tesco Extra Large Organic Freerange Eggs have this particular lable.
A six box of the same bought from Waitrose (Columbia Blacktail Hens) does not have this written anywhere in the label.
Does this mean they are or not vaccinated?
The irony here is the egg yolk from the Tesco brand is usually massive compared to the Waitrose brand(even though they are roughly the same price and size)...
