View Full Version : Gyms are an expensive rip off

I believe that people who join gyms are wasting their money. A lot of people pay hundreds of pounds in yearly or monthly fees in advance, and only go a few times.

It is far cheaper to exercise outside a gym and it is less hassle. If I want to go for a run, I will just jog around the streets. I also have an exercise bike in my flat so I don't even have to go out to stay fit.

I used to be a member of a large commercial gym, that provided almost no guidance, tuition or motivation from the staff. I also know that all large commercial gyms rely on people joining and not attending.

If every gym member went to their gym twice a week there would always be lengthy queues for the machines, showers, swimming pool and saunas. To me, these gyms are a rip-off - they take our money, knowing that they cannot server everybody, and therefore do nothing to actually encourage people to workout more, or to reach their goals.

The gyms make money because people fail year after year to actually lose weight and get fit!

well my GYM is £30 per month in central london instead of £120 - so im happy with that :-)

I go for 1hr everyday, not to loose weight just to keep fit.

I think that this is the correct quote from Matt off the top of my head:

'I dare you to get into the best shape of your life'.

I've taken this challenge, only when you do, will you understand.

Oh, yes, unfortunately, it doesn't cost much because there is virtually no equipment necessary and can be done wherever you like.

Gyms are for weaklings.

I love my gym membership. There are things gym supply that I can't get at home. I like lifting weights and my membership is very reasonable. I also like the gym as my thinking space; I get a lot of thinking done there.

i dont go to the gym, i get enough execise walking my dog and looking after horses. shoveling shit, carrying water buckets, heavy hay nets, moving huge bags of food that weigh a tun! not to mention the field is on the side of a steep hill, so i feel the burn on my legs daily!

I've been kinda curious to try this thing out:

www.lumberjackyoga.com

This unusual workout burns more fat than cardio... Builds more functional muscle than lifting weights... And in this letter I will reveal to you WHY the fitness industry is DEAD WRONG when it claims you should be running on a treadmill and lifting weights for health and fitness...and how you can test-drive this new program for FREE...

manual labour like digging, lifting and chopping is a great way to get fit and doesnt build muscles in unusual places

armoured_amazon
17-11-2008, 10:17 AM
I have nothing to chop and I don't have muscles in strange places. The gym is for some people, not for everyone. There's nothing wrong with paying for gym membership, should one wish.

I`d have thought the best way to burn off calories is to stay in and make love, yet so many people are so daft they pay to go running on a treadmill instead  I`d know which I`d prefer to do

alrick888

Going to a gym regularly has improved my posture, my self-confidence and even given me some muscles in strange places.

But there are some drawbacks to gyms too, like anorexic people that spends hours on the treadmills (or what are those machines called) and the constant loud music.

So I recommend yoga classes! My faves: kundalini yoga and power yoga. Both will give you a great workout as well as relaxation.

The gym staff is not there to motivate you .

You gotta motivate yourself. They don't offer anything but basic advice for free. The realdeal costs as in personal training and they sell their knowledge for cash .

FIND A GYM THAT'S within your budget and make a habit out of attending .

The gym is a place where you can meet girls and strike friendships .. it's a microcosmos and from my expirience 90 % of gym goers are there to socialize more and secondary to work out .

Gyms are insane - they are the front line research labs for the study of sheeple and their manipulaiton. I really do not get what people have against exercising, jogging, etc in the local park, countryside or even back garden.

You know the latest thing now are threadmills with flat screen monitors which havea non-stop entertainment news channel so you can get all concernered and obsessed with Brittnany Spears or Paris Hilton.

And people pay good money to be treated like lab rats.

No offsense mate but you look pretty unnatural. Look at any anatomy book and you'll see no part of the human body which is naturally shaped like you.

Another thing, chicks do not did guys who look like you. That's a marketing ploy you fell for.

I'm all about outdoors : please explain me why I have to go outside in 0 degree weather freezing my nuts off and just walk around for 1 hour at night ?

I'd rather walk 1 hour on a treadmill in a nice gym, warm, while checking out the ass of the hottie working out next to me ;)

At some point you will wake up to the reality that watching some "hottie" bum on a threadmill is not the same thing as being in a bed having great sex with her. What you are doing is a non-booze version of the sad lounge lizzard going "hey baby what's your sign!" to a dozen slappers before he goes home and pulls his willy but thinks he is a lady's man.

I hate to break this to you, but the best looking and truly sexual/senusal women go for men who do not stare at their arses in gyms. Honest, this is good advice I am giving you.

Should you not appreciate a piccaso just cos you can't paint one?

My local gym costs £30 a month, inc pool, because its "basic" compared to the "health club" up the road. What that really means is it has free weights which you work harder with so get more results, wanky machines making it easier kind of defeats the point.

Don;t have room for an oly bar, power rack and bench at home which is about all you need plus some bands maybe.

Cardio at the gym, the mind boggles. Do a sport, it will work you 1000 times harder and be more fun. How hard to you push yourself jogging at the gym? Compare that to chasing down a loose ball, making another tackle, throwing that extra punch, beating the rival on your shoulder etc.

why dont we all agree that its up to the individual?

horses for courses.

there is nothing wrong with paying to go to the gym if you enjoy it and feel great and in shape.

those that pay and dont go... well, thats your choice too.

i will never go to the gym because my life dictates that i exercise daily anyway. i dont have the required dedication either. but thumbs up to those that do.

This is the fault of the individual, not the gym... if they sign up knowing they will be paying monthly, then they should be going to the gym instead of sitting infront of the TV... not all gyms are subscription memberships either, the one near me allows you to pay £4 a day, no contracts, no bank details etc..

The gyms make money because people fail year after year to actually lose weight and get fit!

again, its the fault of the individual, the individual signs up, the individual is 'ripped off' by choosing not to go regularly.

Lol! I wouldn't say I hate them exactly, in my last job there was a gym there which I'd use regularly, but it was never the same as running on the beach opposite work - time was my main deciding factor then - 1 hour for lunch only :(

As for Venice Beach - been there, laughed a lot at over developed meat heads - and some of the blokes were pretty grim too! :D

I like putting some headphones on and cycling, running etc outdoors. This evening, for instance, cycled home in the pissing down rain and strong winds, but when I got home, all hot, out of breath, skin tingling - felt great! No way I'd get that in a gym (well not without a wind machine and people spitting water at me throughout my time there! ;))

S.A.S. Selection

One of the first things people think about when they hear "SAS"(besides soldiers in black kit storming a building)is Selection. Selection is designed to break people. Only about 10 out of 125 will make it. For any soldier Selection is the ultimate test of endurance and mental strain. Selection is broken down into 3 phases.

The first part is the Special Forces Briefing Course. This is a joint three day class to show potential SAS and SBS recruits what is expected of them. Class room lectures and physical training take place. You MUST pass this course to be allowed onto Selection. They are shown films and are given the chance to get some insight into Selection. For certain reasons this is not considered(by SpecWar Net)to be one of the THREE MAIN phases of Selection. This should be combined with the first part.

The First three weeks of Selection is held mostly in the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains in Wales. Soldiers are expected to increase their weight in their bergens (rucks) and distances will also become greater. If a soldier fails a test more then twice is RTUed(Returned To Unit). The soldier is allowed to repeat the course again if he is willing. One of the most notorious parts is the "Fan Dance". This is a march over the Brecons. It should take about 4 hours to complete. Another part and probably the most famous, is the Long Drag. It is held on the last day of the three weeks. It is about 40 miles over the Brecons. The soldier willl now be carrying a 55 pound bergen (if it is under weight a DS will make sure you get the proper weight). Remember this doesn't include water and food! The passing times range from 20 to 24 hours to complete this course. Although TA members get a little slack (about 30 min.). If the weather is good try to get in under 20 hours.

Well if I bought a little happinies into someones life today I guess I succeeded in that little "excercise".

I train Thai myself, used to amateur box. The point scoring style of ABA doesn't translate as easily as I hoped to MT, resulting in a speedy, yet sustained, shit kicking in my first bout. My oponent gave me the questionable accolade of "Durable" after the fight.

When it comes to training nothing motivates like the fear of loosing a fight....more than your ego gets bruised.

and i was not the one who initiated the personnel comments.
Whilst they did refer to you as an individual person, I was mearly pointing out the facts of the matter, not insulting you for it. I don't live free of the system, never claimed you to be worse than me because I pointed something out.

I prefer the gentler aspects of life these days,as i am not fond of ego.
When it comes to sports "playing to win" gets a bad rap, but take away the element of achievement and it kind of defeats sports. I know we enjoy playing them, but why? it's the challenge. You can loose and have fun doing it but it's hard to find anything in life that doesn't ave some kind of objective. Non competitive "sport" is a kind of torture, ie diggin a hole then filling it back in again to no end was used to break POW spirits. If you were in two teams and the first to do it got a cake, it's more like fun (ish).

Like i say i do not speak much, just thoughts on a screen.
I find people assume to much these days, its not their fault delusions are powerful and are hard to over come, but one must dig deep and fight them as much as they can.
I assumed very little, the evidence was/is there.

Yes,but first you have to investigate what you want to be free from;)
well one thing is for sure, its not a gym.
and if you like gyms,i think the preferred method of payment is as you go,but these fancy gyms need a high turn over because of of the cost of running them, and that's why they charge these phenomenal amounts, and most folk do not always go often any way.not my cup of tea TBH.
Complete waste of money.

I remember seeing two types of people, muscles bound blokes who spent hours looking at the reflection, and slightly overweight people looking like tins of spam at kwik Save

What, nothing in between? That's a worry:D

A flabby body?

Maybe:DLOL:D,one way to fight the flab,it starts in the head and stop eating shit, and just get a dog and walk and walk and walk you will be as thin as a rake before you know it,ha ha,and a few exercises on the way around wherever you walk,i feel a lot of gyms are more posy type s of places where blokes like to show off in front of women and vice versa, ya know the types of gyms, the NWO type with a hundred bikes, rowing machines and them fancy walking ones all lined up uniformly, makes me cringe even thinking about it.

The gyms make money because people fail year after year to actually lose weight and get fit!

i will agree with you about peoples willpower when it comes to working out. ive been weightlighting for 5 years ive been in 3 gyms in that time every single week ill see new faces only to never see them again. me and my friends always put bets on to see who will last longer in the gym lol. i woudn't call all gyms a rip off tho mines very cheap £25 a month it is no problem for me and i find it cheap. but if you dont have a membership its £5 a visit.

The one thing a gym offers that pounding the streets and lifting bags with 15 cans of beans in doesn't is classes. Make use of them.

Not only are they enjoyable but they're also good from a social point of view and if you're male you will notice that more girls attend classes than men do so there's an added bonus.

They key to any sort of exercise is do what you enjoy doing and it doesn't feel like a chure.

My weekly routine is:

Monday - Football (1hr)
Tuesday - Kick Aerobics then normal Aerobics (2hrs)
Wednesay - Rest
Thursday - Rest
Friday - 5 mile jog
Saturday - 10 mile jog.

If I was free I'd make use of classes on weds and thursday nights such as circuit training and boxercise but im busy and can't go.

I also like to do a bit of boxing and kick boxing when my sparring partner is free.

What if every single person with a valid membership card turned up tomorrow at 9am - there would be absolute pandemonium!! :D

How do we go about organising that?
