Why do the Americans write dates of the month and year backwards?

9/11 is the most obvious reverse symbolism. 911 being the number to call in an emergency. To the rest of the world that date would be written 11/9.... In the UK the number for an emergency (Ambulance fire Brigade and Police) used to be 999 revers that number and we have 666.
