There a big debate today about Council Houses and whether the people who live in them should be allowed tenancy for life, what do you think?
I personally think shelter is the most fundamental of Human needs, and all housing should be as affordable as council housing is.
Council tenants could lose their right to a home for life under reforms being considered to cut waiting lists, it emerged today.
Under the proposals, council homes could be provided with fixed-term contracts and regular reviews every few years.
Any tenant whose financial circumstances improve could be asked to move to the private sector, purchase part ownership of their home or pay higher rent.
The proposal was put forward by the Chartered Institute of Housing, which represents housing officials, reported The Times. It is understood it gained favour under former Housing Minister Caroline Flint, who also floated the idea of removing council housing from people who fail to seek work.

Regular reviews to see if your a good citizen, obeying the curfews, working in a mindless, soul destroying job for a few credits on your id card, buying stuff you don't need and voting in every election if your not doing all of the above then your OUT on the street.
Also it could be that they want people to rent privately when they are thrown out of their council houses?
Is this not just to give the 'private landlords'......who charge massively inflated rents....a steady stream of tenants, whose 'rents' will pay the landlords mortgages for them?
This is possibly being done because many MP's and wealthy people have built up a property portfolio and they are worried that their empire will collapse if they don't get enough tenents to pay their mortgages.
So when they do remove the social housing safety net by putting council housing on a 3-year lease. You will have no long-term home security, increased racial tension against the immigrants (through no fault of there own) who will always be first in the queue, and use the policy to evict the pensioners from their homes and into an overpriced and poorly run residential home, that they will need to fund themselves.
Sad news indeed :(

VERY INSIGHTFUL...you are awake..!! Thank you for your reply, that was excellent. It makes you want to scream, doesn't it?? I also think there aren't enough property nor enough new land that is being given out to pubic housing, so they are also trying to think of ways to address that. One other thing though, are there still masses of empty public housing that is empty through disrepair? They should get their act together and get those repaired or simply there is this other agenda going on here.
BUT to play devils advocate..there ARE people/families that live in council/housing association property that when they move in are on a low or no income and do work their way out of it to being able to afford to go private, that is fact, so I can see part of how this has come about and am surprised it has not come about before now. Public housing is meant for those who cannot afford private housing, so is it fair that those who are in public housing for say, 15 years but now are on a very nice salary, thank you very much, should take up the property of those that really need it??
I use to work in public housing, and was a council tenant for many years.
Putting it out there for discussion...:)
