TERRORISM THREAT IN UK 'GROWING'

More Islamist extremists are active in the UK than previously thought, a secret intelligence report seen by the Sunday Telegraph has suggested. There are "some thousands" of militants in Britain, with extremist cells concentrated in London, Birmingham and Luton, the quoted report says. The document also states the UK will remain "a high-priority target" for al-Qaeda for the foreseeable future. The Home Office said resources had been invested to tackle the complex threat. The paper says the document - marked "restricted" - was drawn up by the intelligence branch of the Ministry of Defence, MI5 and Special Branch.

Although the report states judging the number of militants is "difficult", it cites estimates from the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) which claim there are "some thousands of extremists in the UK committed to supporting jihadi activities, either in the UK or abroad. For the foreseeable future the UK will continue to be a high-priority target for international terrorists aligned with al-Qaeda. It will face a threat from British nationals, including Muslim converts, and UK-based foreign terrorists, as well as terrorists planning attacks from abroad."

The head of MI5, JONATAHN EVANS, warned in November last year that there were at least 2,000 people in the UK who posed a threat to national security because of their support for terrorism. This was a rise of 400 since the previous year, he said. And in April, Home Secretary JACQUI SMITH said the terrorism threat facing the UK was "severe" and "growing". But the latest document's figure of "some thousands" appears to suggest the numbers are greater than previous thought.

The report also describes those involved in extremist activity in Britain. "The majority of extremists are British nationals of south Asian, mainly Pakistani, origin but there are also extremists from north and east Africa, Iraq and the Middle East, and a number of converts... The overwhelming majority of extremists are male, typically in the 18-30 age range. The main extremist concentrations are in London, Birmingham, with significant extremist networks in the South East, notably Luton."

It also says the networks are principally engaged in "spreading their extremist message, training, fundraising and procuring non-lethal military equipment to support the jihads in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq, and sending recruits to the conflicts". It adds that "improvised explosive devices" intended to cause mass casualties "are the most likely form of attack in the UK".

A Home Office spokesman said it was aware the terrorist threat to the UK was "real" and "increasingly complex. The threat level is set by JTAC and remains at 'severe' as it has done for some time. We have always been clear - as has the director general of the Security Service - that there are many plots, individuals and groups under investigation. Significant resources had been allocated to counter-terrorism policing and tackling radicalisation in the UK and abroad," he said. He added that the government had a strategy for dealing with the immediate threat of attack, for bringing terrorists to justice and for taking action to prevent people becoming or supporting violent extremists.

OK,if this is such a problem why do TPTB just ship or fly the so called terrorists to afghanistan, pakistan or a country where they can join fellow believers,or if they are home grown why do they not follow the same procedure as the Saudis and rehabilitate the terrorists and buy them gifts and then Gordon can go and shake their hands for being such good citizens:rolleyes: or did they purposely let Islamic fundamentalism get out of control, the French intelligence service had a nickname for London years ago, londonistan because of the British governments lack of control of the spread of Islamic fundamentalism ideology throughout the last few decades, all on purpose though,to gain more control of the general population. The IRA terrorised Britain for decades and we saw none of the measures of curtailing freedom as is the case now,i wonder why,do you know why?;)

BBC=British brainwashing corporation.

I spotted this one today. Pure propoganda as far as I'm concerned.

You really do have to question these stories. Why would they want to tell the whole British public about the extent of terrorism in the UK? Surely every logical argument would lead to keeping it quiet?

I don't doubt that there could be that many 'terrorists' operating in the UK. Bear in mind they are only referring to those with the ideology and have expressed the will to act on it.

However I don't believe they keep close tabs on as many people as they say.

The simple matter here is that the powers-that-be are starting to pass on, or at the very least 'leak', information that a more rigorous Government would simply not reveal. If you were head of a secret service that did not want terrorism to impact on the public, you would not let this kind of stuff get out.

Someone once said to me that the only way to truly tackle terrorism would be to not report it in any way, shape or form. Put a blanket ban on it. The majority of damage done by terrorism is psychological. I think this is a very good point. Obviously you can't cover up the twin towers falling down, but most other things would be simple enough.

The beeb will continue to spread scare stories through their airwaves, bolstered by superficial statistics, to keep the public in fear of the man next door. This kind of media coverage attacks the conscience of the 'sheeple', ensuring they are constantly looking over their shoulder, resulting in them policing themselves and keeping divisions in society.
The same stories were printed when the IRA were around and it's the same now. Like you say, If there were that many terrorists in the country, we would have bombings every week. But I'm sure when the government start pushing through their ID card scheme we'll see an increase in reports like this from the BBC.

Armchair Philosopher you said: "I don't doubt that there could be that many 'terrorists' operating in the UK. Bear in mind they are only referring to those with the ideology and have expressed the will to act on it."

Agreed, the BBC are only referring to those 'with the ideology', and that is exactly it in a nutshell.

Expressing the will to act and THINKING about committing acts of terrorism (as a radical fundamentalist ideology), is a lot different from actually DOING it; and this is where the BBC and its cretinous news editors / writers shoot themselves in the head with non-factual, fear-mongering, reports like this to stir up the people (via racism and religionism), to hate and despise and want to kill one another.

I have a few friends at work who are Muslims, and from what I've learned from them just talking about the news and stuff at work with them, is that, what the BBC doesn't ever print (or expect the non-muslim majority of people here in the UK to know), is that under the confines of the Islamic Koran / Hadith, all Muslims living abroad in non-Muslim countries are commanded to keep and obey the criminal and civil laws of the land, which is why there aren't bombs going off in the UK every day.

Adds further weight to the TRUTH that the London 7/7 bombings were 'false flag' operations.

Its psychological propaganda - i.e. scaring the people into thinking about what religious / radical fundamentalists MIGHT DO.

Agree totally, the BBC report is complete bullshit!!
