I came across this picture in a newspaper a few weeks ago. For some reason I couldn't stop looking at it; something wasn't right.

'NEW YORK - Presidential rivals John McCain and Barack Obama have agreed to participate in what historian and author Theodore H. White once called "a ritual of American politics" — the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner.'

Then it dawned on me. What I was looking at was the 'alchemical marriage' as depicted in the Tarot. Several of the Major Arcana cards in the Tarot deck deal with the 'Great Work' of Alchemy. Transmutation through the union of opposites.

The Devil - Rider Waite Tarot
Notice the chain affixed to the priest's crucifix in the picture above, seeming to 'bind' the clasped hands, and referencing the Devil card.
Presiding over the wedding in the Thoth Lovers image is the Hermit*, or in this case Cardinal Edward Egan.
*According to DuQuette.

Another of the alchemical cards is the High Priestess, which depicts two pillars, one black and the other white. They bear the initials B (Boaz/Barack) and J (Jachin/John).

The High Priestess - Rider Waite Tarot
Boaz ("fleetness, strength") stood on the left and Jachin ("founding"), also spelled Jakin (יָכִין, Standard Hebrew Yaḫin, Tiberian Hebrew Yāḵîn) stood on the right... Some variants of the Tarot card the High Priestess depict Boaz and Jachin in reverse representing an anti-temple or rejection of Solomon's religion.[citation needed]

It seems likely that these pillars also reference the vertical struts in the Cabbalistic Tree of Life.

What do y'all think - am I seeing things or is there some bizarre ritual shit going on here?
