In New York state, 21,753 children were reported missing last year, according to statistics from the Division of Criminal Justice Services.

For the last 10 years, the Freemasons in New York have been giving free child video tapes to parents in order to assist law enforcement authorities by providing reliable pictures of how their child walks, talks and looks from several angles.

Now, here in Rockland, local Masons are working with the Sheriff's Department and members of the New York State Dental Society to expand the identification methods by including a digital photo card and mouth impression on plastic wafers with DNA samples.

The Masons CHIP program (an acronym for Child ID Program) is scheduled to take place on the first-floor level at the Palisades Center Mall this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Digital photography is by the Rockland Sheriff's Department under Sheriff Jim Kralik's CARE program (Computer Aided Rescue Effort).

No appointments are necessary, but a parent must accompany the child to sign a permission slip.

The whole process takes about10 minutes, is absolutely free and the video tapes and mouth imprints with DNA are given to the parents. The sheriff's office will retain the digital photo for a period of two years.

A worthwhile investment of time to save potential heartbreak later.

The ID program was begun by the New York Grand Lodge of Masons in 1966, and the program has been a model for similar programs conducted by the Masons and others nationwide and in support of the efforts of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Amber Alert Program.

In 1999, the National Center reported 797,500 children were reported missing (the last year for which records were available.) In New York state, last year the Masons videotaped 28,785 children. Since the program started in 1966, more than 240,000 children have been videotaped by the Masons in New York as part of the CHIP program.

Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef has issued a proclamation designating Saturday as "Child ID Day" in Rockland
