here's a useful resource for anyone attempting intellectual honesty in terms of christianity....

http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/index.htm

Millions of such Bibles are published and distributed each year by believers in their tireless and tiresome effort to propagate their beliefs. Consequently, nearly everyone, whether believer or skeptic, has at least one copy in his or her possession. Among these Bibles will be found many different versions, but all have one thing in common: all are believer-friendly editions that support, promote, and defend the Bible.

The Skeptic's Annotated Bible attempts to remedy this imbalance. It includes the entire text of the King James Version of the Bible, but without the pro-Bible propaganda. Instead, passages are highlighted that are an embarrassment to the Bible-believer, and the parts of the Bible that are never read in any Church, Bible study group, or Sunday School class are emphasized. For it is these passages that test the claims of the Bible-believer. The contradictions and false prophecies show that the Bible is not inerrant; the cruelties, injustices, and insults to women, that it is neither good nor just.

enjoy

Those are great counter-posts, turquoisefire777. --

"To those who have, more will be given, but to those who have not, even what they think they have will be taken away." -- One of the many absolute rules (measures) found in the Bible.
This rule is how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Oh my. I've just read the story about Lot and his family being saved from the destruction of Gomorrah.

I'm pretty sure my sunday school teacher never told us the bit about Lot's two daughter's getting the old man drunk, shagging him and conceving a son each via him!

I'd buy that Bible, seriously.

But since it's on the internet and it's free, I'd look into it.

What some people are not realising about some of the unpopular scriptures, is the context of which they were written.

Ignorant people and ignorant and lazy "christian" denominations don't look into the "why" certain scriptures were written the way they were.

For example, Apostle Paul said in 1st Corinthians 11:5:

"But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved."

So certain denominations make women wear dollies and coverings on their head so that their head will be covered while praying.

If anyone does the research, they would discover that Paul wrote what he did because during his time, a woman who went around with with an uncovered head was considered a prostitute. And women who covered their heads were considered to be more virtuous, thus, having more spiritual authority.

But MOST people don't delve into the reasons why certain scriptures were written the way that they were.

They just ignorantly take what is written at face value.

Thats why if someone wants to understand the Bible, you need to read AND study it, and stop being an ignorant fool because you don't understand what you are reading.

Im sorry that is just utter rubbish... there is the odd one that if you were desperate enough to, you could try and create another angle at looking at it, but the vast magority of the texts are blatant.

and it should not matter anyway such important knowledge should not be hard to see... without needing someone to decorate it for you..

Oh please... read what you just wrote there.... So back then you were expected to wear a dollie... because if you did not then you were considered a prostitute and Paul clearly says that it was not expectable in the eyes of god.... he sounded so clued up and saved!!

So why should people not wear dollies now? .....

it is also implying that prostitutes are not welcome...

But MOST people don't delve into the reasons why certain scriptures were written the way that they were.

well they do its just christians like you fight tooth and nail to cover them up in anyway you can...even when some of them are clear as the blue sky....

They just ignorantly take what is written at face value.
but with the example you have given face value or your expressed value are both as bad as each other...

Thats why if someone wants to understand the Bible, you need to read AND study it, and stop being an ignorant fool because you don't understand what you are reading.

Im sorry the real fools are the people that still buy into the bullshit of religion... it could not be more clear how it has been used over many many years, and people who have researched the bible are not simply getting it wrong, they are seeing it for what it is... a bile pile of contradicting split personalities and a life story who's time scale does not even add up as well as shocking similarities to other past "gods" and "legends".... and "myths"

if people find security in Jesus Christ then fine, good for them, but i just wish they would stop trying to sell people all the bullshit stories... the sooner they cut religious education from school the better.

That's a fair point, context is obviously very important.

I wonder what context you'd put the Lot/Daughters, Drugged/Incest tale in, to make that more acceptable?

If you are trying to imply that I think the lot/daughters "story" is an acceptable one, because I was writing about context in a general way, then you have made a wrong assumption and a big stretch.

Is it OK to call someone a fool?

It's OK to call someone a fool.

Psalm 14:1, 53:1
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.

Matthew 23:17, 19
Ye fools and blind.

Luke 11:40
Ye fools.

Luke 24:25
O fools, and slow of heart to believe.

Romans :21-22
Their foolish heart was darkened.

1 Corinthians 15:36
Thou fool.

Galatians 3:1
O foolish Galatians.

It's not OK to call someone a fool.

Matthew 5:22
Whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Being an ex-christian I have to say that your belief makes you have "Rose_Tinted_Goggles" which makes you perceive certain verses and passages that
a.)Dont make Sense
b.)Contradict Itself
c.)Actually is Appaulingly crude

as fine, you put things in your own context and just bypass what doesnt make sense

For example, In the bible in the Torah(first five books) I cant remember where exactly, but there is passage where someone consults YAHWEH or GOD through SORCERY which is FORBIDDEN by the Law, Odd

Also Moses and AARON stop GOD from KILLING the israelites by waving a CENSOR about,

K so this god is consulted by a) sacrificing lambs, and then when hes mad he can be calmed down by b.) waving some nice scented candles

What a holy and amazing God this is...

don't forget that the all powerful god tended to have problems with chariots made of iron...

Judges 1:19
And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
