It looks as if the state wants to take control of what we can or cannot name our children (at least in Italy anyway).
Italy's Court of Appeal has banned a couple from naming their son Friday - Venerdi - because the name could expose the boy to ridicule.
By Chris Irvine
Last Updated: 12:12PM BST 24 Oct 2008
Named after the manservant of Daniel Defoe's famous novel Robinson Crusoe, The Cassation Court said the name was associated with "subservience and inferiority".
The judges also ordered the boy to be renamed Gregorio, named after the saint's day on which he was born.
The boy's parents, known only as Mara O and Roberto G, had said they should be free to name him as they pleased, and said they would continue to call the boy Friday, describing it as "nice".
They even threatened to call their next child Mercoledi (Wednesday).
The verdict provoked mixed reaction across Italy.
Gian Ettore Gassani of the Italian Association of Matrimonial Lawyers agreed with the ruling.
He told an Italian news agency that Italian law mandated changes "when the child's name is likely to limit social interaction and create insecurity".
Italian journalist Alain Elkann argued that Friday was a good name, adding: "It would have been different if they'd called him Friday the 13th."
Friday joins an ever-growing list of banned names, arguably rising because of the celebrity trend of unusual names for children.
In February, a judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so she could change her name from Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.
The judge said the name embarrassed the nine-year-old and could expose her to teasing.
Other names banned include Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy, Yeah Detroit and twins called Fish and Chips, although Number 16 Bus Shelter was one of the more bizarre ones allowed.
In New Zealand again, last year a couple was banned from naming their baby 4Real, so they settled on Superman.
According to genealogy website findmypast.com, the UK has six boys named Gandalf, 29 Gazzas and even 36 Arsenals.

Terrific! So the solution to being ridiculed is to change our ways to appease those who ridicule us! Why don't those doing the ridiculing be made to change their ways.. you know like stop riducling people! Duh!
Something similar happened to me when I was at school. I was being bullied and had to attend a special needs class with the Orwellian name of "Education for Living":p. The tutor taking the class (who had the unlikely name of Miss Blow:D) was almost falling over herself with suggestions of changes I could make to my lifestyle that would stop the bullies targeting me. At no point did she suggest that it was the bullies who needed to change their ways and stop bullying. This is Prime Conformsim. It wasn't the bullies fault it was mine! It's like the rapist saying "she was asking for it!"
Think of the message this gives out. Violence is fine. Violating people for merely being different is fine.
Being different is NOT fine. If you're bullied because you're different YOU are the one to blame! You're to blame for not being a clone!:mad:

I agree banning 'Friday' is ridiculous, and agree in principle that you should have the freedom to call your children whatever you like. But the idiots who name their kids "Sex Fruit" or "Number 16 Bus Shelter" kinda ruin it for everybody.

This is the same retarded, hypocritical argument as "Your adult computer game corrupted my child, because I did not supervise him correctly. I'm a terrible parent and I need to be quartered"

PMSL:D When I read that.
It really is a contradiction them starting to ban people from naming their children.
Who the hell do they think they are.
When I have seen articles where PPL with surnames, then name there kids after fictional character.
Peter Rabbit or Mary Poppins then the rockstars name their kids Moonchild or Sky which is becoming popular now. it's so hypocritical.
:) One of our teachers was named Wayne Carr. We used to singger but he was a prick though.

But then a child can change their own name in court.
But really the point is that the court was using the behavior of other children as a justification for forcing the parents to change the name.

Yeah, I agree with you.
I think more people in general should consider changing their names when they're adults to whatever they think best embodies who they are.
One day I might change my name to 'Dances With A Gutful of Bourbon'.

It really is a show of power buy the court system and dictatorial Judges. They are there to "interpret" the law not make them.
It's pointless to even say this to parent's when as you have as you said HC you can change your name by de-pole.
This is in your face "Nanny state".

+1
I can see both sides of this argument. Yes you can change your name but not until you're a bit older. I actually think that parents should remember that their child has to live with their choice and choose accordingly.

I kind of agree with this, there are some dead set idiots out there who call their kids anything, and dont seem to realise or care about the consequences of their folly for the child.
Calling your kid Gandalf because you like lord of the rings, or arsenal, because its your favourite football team, just isnt right.
Of course it gets even more bizarre, one girl even told me, she wanted to call her son satan when he was born.

Friday is a ridiculous name to give a creature that cannot influence it him/herself. I would be grateful if I were the child that somebody with more sense had intervened to prevent my daft parents naming me after a day of the week. There's not being afraid of being ridiculed for one's beliefs and then there's having no choice over the matter. I believe the child had no choice and that it's therefore a good thing that somebody intervened.

That's the problem. You regard the child as some kind of possession. You emphasise the word "my" by capitalising it. If I had a dog or a cat, then I might call it a silly name - but when a child is going to be mocked and ridiculed, potentially growing up with a complex because of the self-indulgent whims of the parents it's a different matter. When the imbecile parents can't take responsibility for a child's welfare, others step in. There's enough shit for children to deal with in this world without having it added to by the parents.

But you have no problem with the government acting as if the child belongs to the state. Yes you are right bendelapidate, any child that I have is MY child, not the states. I will name it in any way I wish. If they dont want to accept the name then I dont care. I hope those parents in Italy CONTINE to call their kid "Friday". What are the government gonna do, put a gag in their mouths ?
Only "imbeciles" would think that the government has the right to name YOUR child.

If you cant give your kid a decent name, then you are a silly parent, do you think the kid is going to enjoy being called donald much, if you are Mr.Duck?
Sometimes its necessary for others to step in for parents, who have little thought beyond what makes them giggle like a drooling idiot at the time of naming their kid.
Its my kid Ill call it what I want, just doesnt cut it sorry, does this mean you think you can abuse your kid as much as you like, in other ways as well?

you should not be entitled to name your slaves what you want.
even slaves have rights!
well done Italian state.
they are the state's slave too, remember?
so the state should have a say in the naming.
as for stopping the criminals, you need a few of them shot.
cctv and policing the classroom/corridors , very sensible but...
you going to vote for it?

No it doesnt mean that you can abuse your child so please dont EVER do that Deckard.
About the childs name, if YOU think that a child has a silly name (YOUR OPINION), do you REALLY think that you have any say in what it's name should be ? A "drooling idiot" would probably think that it's right for the government to name our children.

I honestly think Friday is not in any way strange for a name, it's not even original. There's an actress named Tuesday Weld, there's Wednesday Addams in the Addams Family and looking at it from a different angle the names of days are derived from names, Thor, Thursday....Freya, Friday.
If I had children then I would choose what MY children were called!
And I also once worked with a Richard Wacker:D honest!

But then it's the bullies fault and it is the bullies and only the bullies who should chage their ways. It's kind of saying "Well kids will be kids" and we just have to accept that. So they reckon it's down to other people to alter their lifestyle to appease the kids. Why!? Why can't a parent give a child they love a name they think suits them? It's giving in to terrorizing bullies!
Of course the kid should also be allowed to change their name if they wish, as soon as they're old enough to be aware of it. Teachers at school ahould respect nicknames as well and address the student by a nickname of their choice.
(Though I'd never address any of my teachers by the nicknames we gave them!:D:eek:)
