Movie effects leaving fans 'jaded'
Movie audiences have become "jaded" by special effects, the director of the forthcoming film based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials has said.
Chris Weitz spoke as Bond stars Daniel Craig, 39, and Eva Green, 26, were reunited in Cannes to show off a short segment of the film version of The Golden Compass, the first in Pullman's best-selling trilogy.
The movie has been made by New Line, the same studio that found success with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, films that were famed for their eye-popping computer-generated wizardry.
Mr Weitz, whose movies include About A Boy, said: "They should be tired of special effects put in place of the story and in place of a lack of character.
"Almost anything can be done in terms of manipulation of digital images, talking animals, flying things and great exploding things. I think there will be a backlash against that sort of thing.
"What it essentially comes down to is wanting to be told a story, and effects must be in service to that. Anytime you are using effects to make up for a lack of that you are in trouble.
"Audiences have been hit over the head (by effects) in the last decade," but the US director added: "Sometimes they are used to extraordinary effect, especially in Lord of the Rings."
Mr Weitz, who confirmed more His Dark Materials films would follow The Golden Compass, said he was not planning to "wow people" with 50,000-strong armies or the biggest explosions, adding: "People are a little bit jaded right now with special effects."
He added: "For me the main challenge is to imbue humanity and spirit into these special effects."
The 13-year-old star Dakota Blue Richards, who has been cast in the central role of Lyra Belacqua after being selected from more than 10,000 young girls who attended open auditions, was also at Monday's press conference.

Makes me wonder how many subliminalls they can fit in under all the special effects! Trick the concious mind into being occupied with lot's of effects then slip in the subliminall messages into the subconcious.
Some effects can be the highlight of the film, but other times there are so many it can send the mind into overload. It mentions a film called the Golden Compass james Bond (not sure) Masonic symbolism again, 007 was an agent for the Royal family some say the original was John Dee, mystic astrologer to Queen reptile face(what's her face?). He was the man who coined the phrase The British Empire.
It says in the above article the girl who plays the leading role was picked from 10,000. They probably allready made up thier minds that she would get the job before the auditions...... being the Brotherhoods chosen one. They would enjoy building up the hopes of the other 9999 girls auditioning.
