She decided to speak out on this issue after the government ignored the Icelandic people’s views and opinions.

The Icelandic singer said: "I am one of many people who have stood up and spoken out, because I have to â€" I wouldn’t be able to live with my own conscience when my grandchildren drive around Iceland (in the future) and it's just full of factories and smelters."

Bjork's new single Nattura encourages active support for a more environmental approach to Iceland’s natural resources.

She said she does not understand how "aluminium smelters can just come to Iceland and takeover".

"I want to protect Iceland's nature and I found out very quickly that it wont be enough to have a huge gig. We had a concert â€" ten per cent of the Icelandic population attended but even that wasn’t enough," she said.

"They are saying in the paper every day let’s throw up these aluminium smelters because of the economic crisis. This is a bad idea because in a way building smelters is part of the economic crisis.

"These huge loans that companies take to build the dam’s for Alco Rio Tinto is too big a chunk for the Icelandic economy to pay. We are on an economic roller coaster ride right now."
